Let's Hear It For Firemen!

Hurricane WV Real EstateToday on my way to my Open House I was surprised to see a house fire right outside the neighborhood of my listing.  I had to pull over and snap a picture.  As much as I felt like a ghoul for doing it, I tend to feel an emotion and reach for my camera so I can help someone else feel it, too.  (I think Real Estate Shows have really gotten into how I think.  I have to have pictures of everything!)

I sat there in the quiet Open House and wondered about the family that just lost everything.  I worried about where they'd go, whether they'd have enough clothes for the next few days, or money to go through a drive through for dinner.  I wondered about their pets.  I worried that they had kids that just lost every toy they ever owned.  I wondered what they were going to do tonight, or tomorrow.

On my way out of the neighborhood, I asked one of the firemen how I could help the family.   To my utter relief, he told me this was a donated house, it was just a training fire.  He was happy to tell me no one got hurt, it was OK.  THANK GOD.

My drive home was a quick one, but I had time to reflect on all that our local firemen do for us.  (And I had a little time to regret I didn't snap a picture of the polite fireman in his uniform!)

Our firemen are fabulous!  I am in awe of anyone who will take a volunteer job that may mean he or she could lose their life to protect me, my family and my home.

But aside from protecting us, the firemen (and women!) here in Putnam County are really a part of our community.  I have memories of preschool trips with my kids to meet the firemen.  They teach the kids about fire safety, let them try on helmets and boots and help them climb up in the trucks.  Kids naturally worship firemen, after this tour that hero worship is ten times stronger!  I appreciate the time spent with the kids.  If there's an emergency and firemen need to be there, my kids learned that they were nice people, and that they would do anything to help take care of them.  I think this is almost as important as the fire safety lessons.  (Almost!)

They also have a fun side.  At Christmas, our local firemen bring Santa through our neighborhoods!  Our big fire trucks have names, and Big John brings Santa by my house.  The dogs and I are as excited as the kids when this happens!  Yes, I run out on the porch in my jammies and wave to Santa.  (All the Mommies out on their porches in their jammies could be part of why they do this, don't you think?)

Our firemen are our protectors.  They care for us and our children.  They put their lives on the line to keep us safe.  They're also one of the fun things about living where I do!

Just wanted to send out a big cheer for our local firemen!  Thank you for all you do for us!!

Sarah, I was so glad to hear about the practice run.  I had no idea they did that.  I pray whenever a fire truck, squad car or ambulance rushes past me.  I can't help but think we're very lucky that there are folks out there whose daily work is helping others in need, oftentimes putting their own lives in danger.  Thanks for a thoughtful post.

OK, first -- opinions?  Should I switch back to the old picture?  I'm on the phone in this one and it just looks like I'm touching my head!!

OK, Maggie - I knew they burned houses for practice, it just didn't occur to me that this might be the case.  It's a good way to get a house cleared off land you want to build on, and it's nice to let the firemen practice.

Danny - Yeah Firemen!!!!!

Sarah, I liked the other picture much better.  Fireman are a brave bunch. I definitely could not do their job and really appreciate the folks that choose to do this for a profession. Really glad to hear this was a practice burn. Your post started out really bumming me out.

Danny - LOL!!

BB - I had to switch back to the old picture.  My husband didn't like the new one either and wondered why I was touching my head.  (Those Razor phones are really thin and hard to see!)  Thanks for your input, new pic is GONE.  I felt so happy hearing that was a practice burn that I started feeling so good about our firefighters, I had to post about them!

I'm still left wondering, what happens to people who do lose everything in a fire like that?  I know the Red Cross helps, and I've pitched in a few times when family or coworkers have been in these situations.  Must be one of the worst feelings ever.

Hi Sarah,  you are photogenic anyway so any picture you upload would look great.  But I liked the newer one you had up today the best.

As for firemen, woo-hoo!  My Dad was a fireman when we were growing up in D.C. so I have ALWAYS had a soft spot in my heart for them.  I LOVE firemen (ok, and women).  They are a brave dedicated bunch.  I'm the 50 year old woman who waves at these young people when the fire engine goes by.  They always wave and smile - but they don't know my wave to them is really from my father.

Sarah, I didn't get to see the new picture - bring it back, now I'm curious :) It's nice to see such a positive story with firemen - one that doesn't make you want to cry.

Sarah's PicDan - Not exactly "gone wild".  "Gone Mild" maybe?

Peggy - Thanks!  Maybe I'd like this one better if I weren't on the phone.  But I thought I'd like a new pic, Little One (my usual photographer) could not be bothered and I'd set up the camera on with the timer -- and my phone rang.  So that's me talking to my business partner, Dad.

And HOORAY FOR YOUR DAD!!!!  I understand, my Granddad was a State Trooper, I was raised thinking policemen were nice men that gave you silver dollars.  ;o)

Yvonne - Here it is, just for you!!  I keep meaning to bake some cookies for our local firemen.  I think I will soon, and take the kids with me to deliver them.

Chris - Or their Moms!!  Loads of fun!!

Hi, Thesa!  You're right, they are a great learning experience for the firefighters.  It's got to be important for them to have a controlled fire that they can learn from rather than having to rush in to try to save people.  It's probably good to be able to stand back and see different techniques or plans without having the worry of a "real" fire.  And it was a relief to me!

Sarah: Until they are needed, too often they are not appreciated--especially when taxes are being discussed. Our firefighters in St. Paul are some of the best anywhere, as are our police officers--something the anti-tax crowd does not seem to appreciate.

Hi, Jay!  I've said it before and I'll say it again, I would be fine with a tax hike to help pay our emergency workers and teachers more.  The people that risk their lives for us and spend their careers teaching our children deserve the respect of a decent paycheck.  Thanks for your comment!

I came here to see about your firemen... and ended up wondering what everyone was talking about in regards to your picture. Glad you posted it so I wasn't wondering. :0)

I too would have wondered about the family from the fire. Glad the fireman was still there and told you it was a practice burn.
