Myth #1: All agents are the same.

The general public thinks that everyone that has a real estate license is the same.  The Rebac article* poses a great example: "Does everyone with a driver's license operate a vehicle the same way?  Of course not! Drivers approach the road differently. Realtors do vary considerably in their approach to their job as well." Some realtors are part time and do not take the job of assisting you in your most important investment seriously.  Real estate designations are another way to gauge agents that are serious about their job.  An agent with designations shows they are committed to learning to serve you better. REBAC further asks, "Would you rather hire an accountant or a certified accountant?" Just like sellers, buyers should squash this myth and interview at least three agents before you make an informed decision about who you want to work with. Preview my previous post about the Top 10 questions you should ask before hiring your next agent.  Many of these questions apply to buyers agents as well!

Michele Reneau is a full time realtor committed to you and your home search.  She has 4 years of tattooexperience and has assisted 150 families that demonstrate that experience, while the average realtor in Charleston only closes 6 properties.  She has demonstrated negotiating skills and has keen insight to identify hidden value in properties. As a Graduate of Realtor Institute (GRI) and an Accredited Buyers Representative (ABR), Michele is always learning new ways to better serve her clients. As a Certified Residential Specialist (CRS), Michele is among the top 3% of Realtors in the nation that have significant experience and demonstrated volume of real estate transactions, as well as complete rigorous educational requirements.  Michele takes her job seriously.  Click here to see what Michele's client say.

Thanks for the post. I'm looking forward to the rest of the list. The same could be said for the mortgage industry!

Michelle,

Interesting post.  Why do you think that "myth" exists?  Sadly I think it is because there is such a huge number of RE agents who don't know how to market themselves.  Look at the short descriptions beside most of the agents that show up on a search page for an area and it gets tough to choose.  Looks like a bunch of "Me Too"s.

The article you're referencing is written from a practitioner's point of view, not from a consumer's.  It counsels buyers what they should do, not what we as professionals should do.

Telling a market what to do never works.  Giving them what they want is what gets their attention.

Just something to think about.

Chris-I don't know why that is either, but I think maybe it's because I know what the commitment means or because the alphabet soup at the end of the name just draws the eye. :)

Darrell-Please feel free to adapt and post for mortgage folks.

Mike-The myth exists for whatever reason and I think the reasons could go on forever.  I understand how the original article was written and I state that I adapted it, specificially so I could address the consumer.  I think the article clearly discusses how the practictioner need to work to overcome these myths by educating buyers, not so much on counseling the buyers since the audience of the original article is RE agents.  (Not sure if I misread your post.)

Hi Michele,

You did a great job on this one! The comparison of the real estate agents and the drivers and drivers licenses and how they operate was a great one- great drives the issue home! NOT all agents are the same. One agents idea of great customer service can be totally different than anothers.

To those SC buyers or sellers, trust Michele- she knows what she's talking about! I have had the privlege of "knowing" her for the last few months and she is on top of her game and knows how to get the job done, and get it done right! Call her if you are interested in buying or selling with a true expert!

Thanks, again, Michele!

Dan-Thanks for stopping by!

Nicole-So kind as always. Wouldn't it be nice if all agents had the same idea of customer service. Then realtors would not have such a bad rap...

Michele, good little mini-series that you have started here.  My suggestion is that you put these little tidbits onto a postcard and mail to a farm area.  One card every two weeks until you get your name established there.  Seems like you will have enough material for quite a few mailings to them.
