We learned some valuable lessons today about ActiveRain and Blogging.

1) We learned that you never know what topic is going to grab people's attention.  Last Friday, we got an email from a friend of ours with a link to the Pumpkin Simulator.  We thought it was cute and Patty suggested that we do a blog about it.  I was against the idea, believing that it would be frivolous, off-topic and not add value to the AR community.  She said that it would be timely, fun and allow people a welcome distraction.  Clearly, we did blog about the Pumpkin Simulator and Patty was right.  In the first 4 days (including a weekend), we have had more than 400 views and 20 comments.  Granted, it's not a blockbuster, but there are definitely people that found some kind of value in the post.

2) We learned that you never know who is going to read your blog.  In our case, the Pumpkin Simulator caught the attention of the Managing Editor of RE/MAX Times for RE/MAX International.  He sent us a personal email to tell us how much he enjoyed reading our blog and commented, specifically, on the Pumpkin Simulator blog, the Porch Painting blog and our Fluorescent Light blog.

3) We learned that you never know what path your blog post is going to take.  Today, our Fluorescent Light blog has been re-blogged once, our Porch Painting blog has been reblogged 5 times, and our Pumpkin Simulator blog was sent out to all RE/MAX agents as part of today's MainStreet Link email, with select headlines from RE/MAX Times Online.  Will this get us more business?  Will be put any money in our pockets as a result of this?  We have no idea!  But we are pretty sure that positive exposure to thousands of our colleagues can't hurt us!

4) Perhaps the most important message we take from all is that blogs come in all shapes, sizes and colors ... and they all have a place at AR.  Much like our lives, AR needs to have balance.  The community benefits from diversity.  Diversity of talents, diversity of viewpoints, diversity of content, diversity of all kinds.  If you feel motivated to blog about something, DO IT!  Someone will see it.  Someone will like it.  Someone will know just a little more about you, and you never know where that someone will lead you.

HI PATTY!

That is so true.  I did a post on the grand opening of  a new best buy in my area and received an email from the general manager thanking me.  I also did another post and received a call from a corporate office in CA about a teaching program.  So, you really never know who you're going to reach!  Blogging & blogging on AR, the possibilites are endless!

All the best,

Patty, I am off to your Pumpkin blog. I think the reason is that many kids would like it. Anything that would a kid would be interested is a good thing.

I just posted a blog that had wandered a bit away from direct real esate or business topics.  I'm relieved to learn of your good results with an 'off-topic' blog.  I'm grateful to you for sharing what you learned from the interesting not-directly-real esate blogs you've posted.  Something I'm noticing about visiting your blogs is that they're pretty! :)  And as I think of it - what I am liking about visiting your blog is your involvement with the community, and therefore the world around you...and if I were looking for a real estate agent, that's the sort of person I'd be looking for.  So - keep it going!

I was completely amazed when I got a thank you note from an author I had mentioned in my blog that I do on my website (I know there's a way to make these one and the same with AR but have yet to figure it out).  A lot of people and companies do automated searches so they are notified when they, their book or product, or business is mentioned on line.  So this guy in England read my blog and emailed me to say thanks.  I thought that was pretty cool.

I guess it is an open platform. Important to note different people are connecting with very different things.

That is awesome to hear!  I would love to know where the readers come from...i.e. are they from Active Rain, did they do a google search? Did they come from another site to our blog?  I wish there was a way of tracking that - if you know, please share!  Thanks!

It's amazing the power a blog has! And I think it's great that you included something fun. That's the beauty of social media - you connect so much more personally when you let a little bit of yourself out there. Thanks, and by the way, the Pumpkin Simulator was fun!

It is surprising isn't who reads our stuff. I found that someone from Inman News subscribed to my blog as well as someone from a local paper here via my Feedburner site. Wow, talk about a boost the old confidence level. But, last year when I had a news paper actually reprint one of my article, that was the point that really hit home how many people can read your post.

Patty/Scott,

What an awesome post.  I like to see that there is more to this than just the points.  Let's face it, as  newbie, I will probably never be able to catch up with all of you who have been on forever.  I just want to know there is value in blogging.  I enjoy learning and it is an awesome place to learn, but I also would like to believe that at some point it will bring me clients.  Your post helped drive home the fact that, there is a possibility that someday the exposure may help me also.

God Bless!

This blog is so true!  We have had the most intriguing contacts through our blogs here on active rain -- a radio station, calls asking us for referrals for attorneys, realtors and more -- not to mention staging jobs!  The points are nothing compared to the exposure blogs can give your business!

Margaret - that is so neat that you have been contacted by a radio station. We did a blog on Fred Meyers Grand Central store when they did their grand opening and someone called and asked us questions as they thought we were the store. lol

More people read our blogs than we can possibly imagine. I continually get phone calls from reporters all over the country because of my online stuff. Newer bloggers seem overly concerned about what to write about, as though they have nothing to say, but everybody has something to say because everybody thinks -- everybody has wishes, dreams, hopes, successes, failures, amusing moments -- so you just write about what you know. And you write about what you don't know, too, because you'll be forced to research it, which will teach you something new. You just write.
