Prospect Heights Colorado

Off the beaten path, little is written about Prospect Heights Colorado. One of the many small towns that dotted the Arkansas River in the early 1900's, whose residence primary mined for gold or for coal. Now tucked into the corner of Canon City between Dawson Ranch and Wolf Park, next to Lake View Cemetery and the county fair grounds.

Some of the other small towns in the area have little to remember them by, including: Brewster, Brookside and Mexico.

The Prospect Heights Mercantile is now divided into apartments.  The little jail  (approx 10 x 10) is now preserved at a monument. Built entirely out of local rock, no doubt a very warm place to serve your time.

Dena that is a great use of an old building.  I bet that it made for some great looking appartments

Dena ~ I know I've ridden by this...is it right along the river? Near Salida?

Neat photos...

KK, it's on 7th Street tucked into a corner of Canon City. Maybe you did a bike tour where you stopped at the fair grounds?

OK ~ I've been to Canon City many times.   Guess that's why it looks familiar!  Thanks for helping my brain remember!

Dena~

I had to smile when I saw these photos. Maybe I'm a little crazy, but they made me want to come visit!

Dena ~ I think you should donate the photo of the jail to the Codgers. They are preparing a new melodrama about lending practices.  Somehow I suspect they could use a jail...real soon!

That little jail is amazing.  I have to wonder who they locked up back then??

They obviously didn't have very many prisoners!  Enjoyed the photos, Dena, thanks.

I lived in one of the old small miners houses back in 1976.  I believe at that time the old lady who own most of those houses and who I rented from still ran the old store with a big pot belly stove in the middle.  I aways thought that place had a lot of potential.
