Keyword research - Don't Waste Your Time & Money Without Research

In my prior post(10-28-08) & video I use the Google Keyword tool to show the number of searches for specific phrases. In comment to that post, it was suggested that this tool may not be that accurate.

Could that really be the case? With the fast changing Internet anything is possible.

So, I decided to run these same keyword phrases (from my prior post) through a few other major keyword tools. One of these tools was from the highly regarded "Wordtracker."

Hese are the results:

wordtracker keywords

wordtracker keywords

The last photo above, for the phrase SAN DIEGO HOME FOR SALE shows that Wordtracker goes down to as few as three searches. Yet, no searches were shown for the Yuma phrases.

So, this shows me that the original Google tool results were accurate!

Just to restate, I'm not saying NOT to use Internet flyer services. Exposure on the classifieds sites is good. However, I PERSONALLY DON'T BELIEVE there is any SEO benefit from these services.

IT'S YOUR TIME & MONEY

Proper keyword research is the key to GOOD search engine rankings. Good rankings equal lots of laser fouced traffic to your site!

Sure, work on ranking for many keywords: High traffic & low traffic ones. But, try to put the most effort into the top ranking keywords

Add all your listings to your website/blog. It's a known fact, that larger sites (more pages) do better in general in the search engine standings.

The best key phrase research is found in your own website stats logs. If you look at your own stats and compare the search phrases people are finding you on, it will open up opportunities for improvements.

Most of these tracking tools are not good for nitch or long-tail searches and don't take into account smaller city searches.  Wordtracker is based on Overture results so are also not 100% accurate.  I guess what I am trying to say is don't solely rely on these tracking tools.  Use them as a reference but more so rely on your own website stats logs to show you what searches are really bringing in the traffic.

Good post, Judy.  I also like the Google Trends product at (http://www.google.com/trends).  This site lets you type in some variations of keywords and it will tell you which are more popular.

Hi Judi - I'm always looking for ways to check what I'm doing and for ways to make it better for my websites and blogs.  I think, many times, articles are written assuming that those reading already know as much about SEO, etc. as the person who wrote the article.  Many times I read about running searches on your keywords and phrases, but I rarely see anything that helps to find out just what keywords and/or phrases one really should target.  The keyword suggestion tool you showed above looks like it might do just that.  Thanks for sharing that tool.
