DRIVERS BE CAREFUL OF LEAVES ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD

In New England and other areas of the country that have the beautiful fall foliage it is beautiful to look at.  There were even some great blogs and pictures here on ActiveRain about this. But once the leaves fall it is iinevitable, they will create the back breaking job of raking.  I remember hating that job as a kid.  But the fun part was making a pile of these, then running and jumping into them.  My father thought this was fun.. until he had to keep racking them up.  LOL.  My it is my turn with my sons.  They rack and jump into them, and I in turn rake them again.  Yes, what goes around comes around.

My point to this story is that now a lot of towns have it where the property owners rake the leaves to the edge of the road.  The town will come along and suck them up with their big hoses.

Drivers be careful.. children still like to run and jump into them, and I would hate to see a child hit by a car that was traveling too close to the side of the road.  Or perhaps has a bad day and thinks it would be fun to drive through them.  There may be children in those leaves.  I'm not saying this *will* happen, I just would hate to have it happen.  Now that I've posted this I'm hoping everyone will take heed, and watch where they are driving.

I second this about being careful.  When I was younger a girl crashed and died right out front of my house ... wet leaves.  And anyone who whould drive through a pile of leaves ... well I won't say what should happen to them! :-)  Thanks for reminding us.

Never mind the leaves...people got to learn how to drive in snow. Yesterdy parts of NJ got 5 inches of snow and they closed down highways...unbelievable....

We got hit with the same storm last night and with many leaves still on the trees, the snow had something to cling to and we had many trees and branch crash to the ground with power out in many areas.  It is still October!!!!

Funny you bring this up as I grew up with my mother warning us about hiding in the leaves .. it just seemed natural this Halloween time of year to hide in a big old pile of leaves and jump out a scare someone as they passed by

Fall is aptly named, in New Engand.  It brings FALLing leaves and FALLing rain.  Lots of pretty scenery, on a sunny day, but wet leaves create slippery roads and make for treacherous driving.

This is a good reminder -- kids do like to jump in the leaves -- even big kids!  So, your message is important and timely.  Tonight we had some sleet -- so now the roads are also a bit slick!  Time to remember how to drive in the winter!

Valerie,

Ah yes, the fallen leaves. They add to color by carpeting the ground but they can get very slippery. :)

Nancy... New Jersey got 5 inches of snow?  Holy Cow.  It sad, but a lot of people don't know how to drive in the snow, you are right.  My father took me to a mall on a Sunday (when they used to be closed on that day) and had me drive, turn, stop fast, etc.. until I learned how to handle the car and feel secure about how to react.  Best thing that could have happened.  I'll never forget that, and I will bring my sons to do the same thing when they are older.

Susan.. I wonder if this is mother nature giving us a preview of what is in store for us this winter. Hmm.. We didn't get much snow in Connecticut last year... Maybe (all total) a foot.  What happened to those winters of 3 to 4 feet.  I miss those days.

Eric.. It is natural for this time of year to jump into leaves.  I just think they should be in the yard when they do this.  Then move them to the side of the road for the town to pick up.

Marilyn, You are right.  Now we also have to realize there are a lot more cars on the road then there was when we were growing up.  So more accidents are possible. I just want it to be a save fall, and hope everyone enjoys this time of year.

Joan, I think there should be driving *tests* in the snow/sleet before one is able to get there license.  It is a total different feeling, and you need to respond differently.  If you never have had this experience you won't know how to react, which could cause an accident.

Valerie, leaves can cause a few dangerous situation for kids like you stated. They can also be create a dangerous situation for drivers when it rains.  Wet leaves on the road can be worst then snow some times.

George, Wet leaves are ALWAYS worse than snow.  It is when we have sleet, freezing rain, or rain itself that freezes two days later, that causes the most problems for drivers.  Snow itself is no sweat.
