Welcome to the Active Rain Book Club.

With over 117,000 members at the time I founded this Group, I was caught off guard by the fact that there was not an active book club here, so I took it upon myself to start one.

I've been a reader all my life. In fact, when I was in first grade in Brigham City, Utah, I had read all the first grade books in the school library, so the librarians let me loose in the second grade section. By the end of second grade, I was in the sixth grade section, and the fifth and sixth grade teachers were upset because I was checking out too many of the books in those sections. I was banished from the school library. Imagine that, a school banishing you from the library.

That's when I discovered the public library. Now that was a library! It was like going from little Brigham City, Utah, to New York City, New York! I was in Heaven.

I schedule reading each day, typically at least 30 minutes for a book and at least 30 minutes for anything else that is not on the Internet, such as magazines and newspapers.

There are three other people here who will help me moderate this group and make sure that everyone is happy here and gets lots of comments on their blog entries about books:

  1. Russel Ray (in my home inspector personna)
  2. Jim Frimmer (my Partner who is also a Century 21 Award Realtor and a Manager at Borders Books and Music in National City)
  3. Todd Bookspan, whom I had to question about his last name since it just seemed so natural for a Book Club

Please feel free to invite your Active Rain friends to our Book Club, and if you see a blog somewhere about books, not only invite them to our Book Club, but invite them to post their blog over here, too.

Happy Reading!

Hi Russel,

I enjoyed reading your comments about childhood reading particularly since they parallel my own so closely.  By second grade I had my own reading group of one reading the 6th graders books. After I was down with the "eager beaver" work - the teacher's extra assignments - she had me go into the empty classroom next door and read to the other kids when they finished their work.  I have distinct memories of getting to words I didn't know and thinking "well, if I don't know that word, none of these kids will know it either so no problem" as I made up a pronunciation.  To this day I'm a voracious reader (and an even more voracious book buyer!) - nothing beats a good book!

Russel and my fellow book worms.

Unfortunately for me most of my interests have few books in the library. So I have become a bit of a book collector as well as a book worm.

I read several hours every night before sleep unless... ;)

Russell,

What a great idea--book club!  When does anyone have time to read?  My New Year resolution is to get back online, which can be addicting.  I try to limit my time online so I get other things checked off my To-do list.

I will post comments about a few of my favorite books read in 2008.

My role as an educator/trainer is helping other professionals to be THE BEST in their field and marketplace.  If I can assist you in any way, contact me.

I was so pleased to come across this - I'm one of those annoying people who reads everything and reads it really fast.  I started my own little blog that no one reads but me just to have a place to write them down so I remember what I've read and what I've thought about it.  Nothing is worse than getting two chapters into a book and realizing you've already read it!

I was just like a lot of the others - started reading really early (and my daughter started as well at age 4 - she's now 7 and reads at about a 5th or 6th grade level) and fluently.

I'll try to post the books that I read that are great - there's not a ton unfortunately but every once in a while is a gem.

Hi Russel,

Great to see a place for book lovers to share thoughts and ideas about what we are reading.

For those who have not read "The Shack", by Wm Paul Young, it is a remarkable journey of one man's desperate search for his kidnapped daughter. Yes, it is a drama, a mystery, a remarkable tale of a "great sadness" and how it is reconciled through Grace.  Exceptional reading, I loved it!

Russell--

Can't believe a school would banish a child from the library!!!  But with every cloud... you were introduced to a real library.  I need to follow your example of blocking time to read. I go for extended times only reading the very necessary (including instruction manuals) to times where I don't seem to do anything but read!  Some balance would be nice.  Thanks for starting this group!

Dear Russell,

You read almost as much as I do :)!

I am using the information you have previously posted on Active Rain to help learn how to use the site.  It is relly confusing to come into it cold and have to navigate it all on your own.

I wish someone would write 'The Active Rain Handbook'.

And I nominate you!

If there is already an Active Rainhand book that you know about, please direct me to it.

All the best,

Lynda

Thank you, Russell.  I have loved books since I first learned to read.  I even thought of being a writer at one point.  But, life always has a way of getting in the way.  I think that's why I like blogging so much.  It's short bursts of creativity without the long term committment of a novel.

I was an avid reader as a child, but found that didn't have time for it once I started a family.  Now as my kids are growing up I try very hard to lead by example and let them see me read as well.  I'm reading again and I love it!  Stephenie Meyer and Dean Koontz are my favorites.

I can't believe you were banished from you school library..that seems a little counterproductive for a school but I am glad you found the wonder of the public library. Happy reading!

I, too, am a book lover and would be thrilled to tell the world what I am reading.  I love to hear what others are reading, too.  And is there anything better in the world than finding someone who has the exact same criteria for admiring a book as I do? I don't think so!

Russel,

I found this group today as I was signing up for slide.com while I watched your beautiful pansies.  There were the links to your different groups in front of me.  You are such an inspiration.  Since this is a book group I would like to offer a free pdf copy of my book that is about to be published.. All I would ask in return is a review.. either good or bad.. I need all the help and input I can get especially before it goes to print... I don't want to offend anyone but I need people to read the book and give me feedback.. so anyone up to it just send me an e-mail or direct message me.  It is about a 2 hour read.  Thanks for an opportunity to share. Let me know what I should do.

Hello group.  Really got turned on to reading in 7th or 8th grade via Sports Illustrated.  Don't laugh - that's what got me started - and whatever works, is whatever works.

It was then that I started tearing up my elementary school library.  Developed to point was reading at 11th or 12th grade reading level in 8th grade.  Would read anything that was near (e.g., cereal boxes, etc.)

Can't imagine folks who haven't read a book since they graduated high school or college.  Like they only read the text books to get through school.  I had to stop reading my personal books, to read the text books.  And have kept reading for business and pleasure ever since.

I'm fairly certain that reading is my preferred learning mode and I'm absolutely certain that I can learm most anything if there's a good book on the topic.

Happy reading to all for business and pleasure.  Keep on reading!

If anyone would like to learn more about the two seemingly "opposing" or "conflicting" economic models that are supported primarily by the Democrats and Republicans (each their own model of course), and would like to be able to understand at a deeper level the currrent debate about our economy, I HIGHLY SUGGEST you read "The American Dream vs. The Gospel of Wealth: The Fight for a Productive Middle-Class Economy" by Norton Garfinkle.

Politics don't matter.  Just read the book if you really want to understand what factors influence our economy and in what way - negative or positive.  You will really be able to understand who's blowing smoke when discussing economic policy and decisions.
