Hawaii is My Home and I Want to Share it With You

Tonya, my wife, is Hawaiian and was born and raised with Hawaiian ideology about "Ohana" or "family".  Our children are proud to be Hawaiian too.  Together, we all call Hawai'i our home and will probably never venture off to anywhere else except for the occasional vacation back to the mainland or maybe back to Europe.  Last weekend, we spent Easter down in Waikiki and even though it was only 30 minutes from our house, you would swear we were tourists enjoying the swimming pool, beaches, restaurants, shopping and of course a Mai Tai (or two).  We sure don't have far to go to be in paradise!

Since Tonya has always been well versed in her heritage as she was brought up as a Hawaiian where "Ohana" or "family" means everything, I was able to learn so much from her over the 20 years that we have been married and continue to learn as much as I can about the 50^th state everyday.  Now I would like to share.

Some facts about Hawaii that may be of interest to you:

• "Hawai'i" was admitted to the union on August 21^st, 1959 as the 50^th and last state.  President Dwight Eisenhower was in office at that time.
• Our state nickname is "The Aloha State".Within the state of Hawai'I, there are a total of 8 major islands in the Hawaiian island chain:

1. Hawai'i
2. Oahu
3. Maui
4. Lana'i
5. Kaua'i
6. Moloka'i
7. Ni'ihau
8. Kaho'olawe (uninhabited)

• The islands were all formed by volcanic eruptions under the Pacific Ocean.  The Big Island of Hawai'i continues to get larger everyday as the Kiluea Volcano is always spewing lava.
• We never change our clocks in Hawai'i.  There is no such thing as "daylight savings time" in Hawai'i.
• Our tallest mountain in Hawai'i is Mauna Kea on the Big Island.  It stands over 13,000 feet tall from the point of where it protrudes from the Pacific Ocean.  If it was measured from its base on the ocean floor, it would be taller than Mount Everest.
• The islands were created as a result of magma flowing through a hot spot in the ocean floor through the tectonic plate.  The theory is that the tectonic plate moves in a northwesterly direction but the hot spot stays right where it is always at.  This is why the islands have some separation between them.....because the magma stopped flowing several times and when it restarted, the tectonic plate had shifted and therefore, the new eruption spot was further away from the old spot.
• The population for the state of Hawaii as of 2005 is 1,275,194.
• Hawaii is home to numerous military installations that can be found at Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines: Welcome to Hawaii
• Tourism is the number one source of our income for our economy in Hawaii.
• The official languages are English and Hawaiian.
• There are only 13 letters in the Hawaiian alphabet.  Eight are consonants and the other 5 are vowels.  Since they can be pronounced with different sounds, some may argue that there are 25 vowels rather than 5. 
• There are never two consonants together.

There is so much more to share about our state but I will keep it simple.  We hope that if you have never been here, you will really be in for a treat when you arrive.  I am off now to learn more about my state.  How much do you know about your own state?

MILITARY BASES, POSTS AND FORTS ON OAHU, HAWAII AND POHAKALOA TRAINING AREA BIG ISLAND OF HAWAII

Schofield Barracks: Mililani, Wahiawa, Kapolei, Waipahu, Ewa Beach, Waipahu, Makakilo, Oahu, Hawaii Schofield Barracks and adjoining Wheeler Army Airfield are the 2nd Brigade, 3rd Brigade, Aviation Brigade, 45th Sustainment Brigade and the 8th Military Police Brigade.  In addition, the 8th Theatre Sustainment Command, 65th Engineer Battalion, 25th Special Troops Battalion and the 556 Personell Service Battalion are also part of the Division team and play an integral role in the success of the Division.

There are also two Brigades that are stationed in other locations.  The 1st Brigade is stationed at Ft. Lewis, Washington and the 4th Brigade is stationed at Ft. Richardson, Alaska.

The 25th Infantry Divison has proudly served in numerous wars and conflicts around the globe.  The Soldiers that make up the division are currently deployed to several locations to include Iraq.
