Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area shaggy Roosevelt elk graze in full view of tourists. Sections of the 1,040 acre preserve have been improved to provide better habitat for waterfowl and wildlife. In addition to the herd of 60 to 150 elk, black tailed deer, ospreys, mallard and wood ducks, great blue herons, nutria and western bluebirds can be spotted here.
The Winchester Bay area is located in the heart of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. The ODNRA is home to many miles of undisturbed beaches, abundant wildlife, 30 lakes, 14 developed hiking trails, 13 campgrounds, 11 beach parking areas, and over 10,000 acres of off-highway riding areas. For ATVers, our dunes offer some of the best riding locations on the coast. Fishermen will enjoy going after salmon, sturgeon, bottom fish, bass, trout and many other varieties of fish. There are numerous lakes for those who prefer freshwater fishing: steelhead, cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, catfish, crappie, bluegill and hybrid bass are all available. There's also clamming and crabbing - and in August and September we have the $10,000 Crab Bounty Hunt.
The Umpqua River Lighthouse dates from 1894. It features a gorgeous and unusual revolving, octagonal, red-and-white First Order lens. The light shines 24 hours a day, but visit Umpqua after dark or before sunrise, if you possibly can. As you enter Umpqua Lighthouse State Park, down a winding road, the light's rainbow beacon rotates through the tall pines with an alternating red and white beam. The 65 foot tower is brick covered with white stucco, but you will not be able to take you eyes off this incredible lens .
