Some really evil people out there...
by Kaushik Sirkar, Chandler REALTOR®

I typically post about Real Estate related matters; however, every so often I have the habit of deviating from the beaten path to discuss other topics.  Its my blog and I'm allowed to!

So an article I just read in the Arizona Republic.  This article did three things to me.  It saddened me.  It angered me.  Then it got me thinking about Realtor®. safety.  What is the article about?  In summary (and please read for all the details) this lovely couple from Arizona decide to retire to the sea.  They get their own boat and sail from port to port.  They were thoroughly enjoying their retirement.  Then comes the grandson!  They decide they are going to give up their life on the sea and move back to land in the Prescott, AZ area to be closer to their family and grandson.  They put up their boat for sale and have the horrible misfortune of being targeted by a gang of crooks.  These people pretended to be buyers, gained the couple's trust and then took everything from them.  They horribly murdered these folks BY ATTACHING THEM TO AN ANCHOR AND THROWING THEM OVERBOARD!!!!

I was extremely saddened reading this article - the worst of things happened to what sounded like the best of people.  I was then angered.  It looks like the judicial process is working out as it should in this case...but in reality, shouldn't these murderers have to suffer as cruel a fate as their victims?  Shouldn't they be tied to an anchor and tossed overboard??  After the anger...I did start thinking about how this applies to Real Estate Agents.

Think about it...the couple was trying to sell something - they were giving a tour to people who were effectively strangers.  This is something that Realtors® do on a regular basis!  I can't but help thinking back to a link that I look at every so often...linked off of Realtor.org that highlights some recent criminal activity where Real Estate Agents were victims.  Also included are some general safety tips.  I can't help but think that this is a topic that we must always continue to harp on....

Thanks for Reading :)

I am saddened when I read something like that also. I also believe the criminals should suffer the same fate as their victims. Real Estate Agents should be aware of whom they are working with.

That's awful...work hard to retire and then this.

We put ourself out there all the time.  We advertise our number, we receive calls from people we don't know, take perfect strangers to the ends of the earth to see vacant houses or desolate plots of land...all in a days work.  All ways think safety first...go with your gut, too.  Death is much more lasting that a commission check.

Kaushik, that's a horrible story.  I won't read the details.  I couldn't stand it.

Of course, you're right about the safety issue in this business.  About 2 months ago 2 local real estate agents were found murdered in the Florida Keys.  They had gone to show properties to someone and were discovered a few days later.  I never did see a follow up story as to the motive.  It scared me all over again.  We cannot be too careful in this business.  Thanks for posting this.

It is tragic that circumstances create such violent people.  There are way to many senseless crimes that destroy families but I have no solution to offer.

Circumstances don't create violent people.

If that were true, then violent people could justify their violence by blaming circumstances.

It's all about personal responsibility and accountability.

Safety is an issue realtors need to be concerned about. There was an agent in the Dallas area murdered about two years ago.

What a horrible testimony to human failngs.  Hate to get too philosophical but basically this world is broken and needs a fix.  In a world where "religious" facatics are blowing people up, our kids are growing up with far too much useless violence.

Thanks for writing this post, is does indeed cause us to pause.

Gregory, I'll disagree.  When kids grow up in an atmosphere of drugs, street gangs and crime they consider violence to be a normal part of life.  Same thing with the religious nuts that blow themselves and bystanders up thinking they will become saints... circumstances of their upbringing taught this behavior.

Kaushik, We stagers have been having some of the same discussion. Being cautious at all times and trying to go with the "gut" to stay out of harms way are some of the measures we take. Cell phones might help. We sometimes decide to take some one with us -- I want to take Luke Constantino with me.

It is so sad to hear about these kinds of things happening. Since I'm near Prescott it somehow seems closer to home. Thanks for the reminder.

Kaushik, every time a Realtors shows a house or does and Open House, they leave themselves open to the nuts out there, and it is amazing that we don't read more stories about Realtors being victums of violent acts.

Kaushik - It's all very sad, but hopefully, it will encourage others to open their eyes and be more aware of what's going on around them.  Can we ever truly trust strangers?  Is it possible that we all want to be thought of as "nice" that we tend to be too trusting or too cautious?

Just out of curiosity, did they have a boat broker?

Be aware of your surroundings.  Street, parking lot, schools and I hope none of you pick up the phone and go to meet people on the other end without giving it careful consideration.  Times have changed and everybody should take extra safety precautions

Can you believe your timing in writing that post?  Now two full days of catching evil at Virginia Tech.

Rick - Couldn't agree more!

Bob - Sound advice.

Maggie - I don't blame you for not reading...very scary stuff indeed!

Dan - Horrible isn't it.  Even more pronounced with the recent Va Tech tragedy.

Luke - Wanna be partners? :)

Steve - Alas the college shooting is even that much more saddening....
