I've spent a lot of time & energy over the past couple of months thinking about branding, IDX, taglines, color schemes, etc, mainly because I'm in the beginning stages of building an entirely new site, which will bring a new brand into my local market.

Obviously, my goal is to bring in an experience that no other agent here offers, as would be any motivated agent's goal.  So, as I make notes and sketches during this process, I'm also investigating all different tools that I can bring to the table.

But what good is having the latest and greatest if you don't do everything else right?  We're all into branding these days, right?  We want our 'brand' to be THE brand in our market.  We want to be remembered and seen as the standout amongst the rest.  The problem though, is that we often get so busy thinking about being the biggest and best, that we forget the simple things.

That said, one really simple thing that we MUST get right is our tagline.  It's like our unique value proposition, or our elevator pitch that's going to be plastered on everything we do, from our blogs, to our letterhead, to our marketing materials, signs... well, you get it.  So, what should that tagline do for us?

That brings me to my point.  I read a blog post tonight on CopyBlogger about taglines, and it put in very simple terms exactly where many of us miss the boat.  We get so busy trying to be clever, that we miss the real goal, which is to make sure that when someone reads it, they understand exactly what we do; what we offer to them.

Anyway, I just wanted to share this post and encourage everyone to really evaluate what your tagline says about what you do.

Ryan - I have thought long and hard for the perfect tag line and it still escapes me. And I think it is vital. Just yesterday I saw a tag line for an unrealted business that did not make any sense. I had no clue what it was about and how it connected to the business and what they are trying to market. I'll have to go check out the copyblogger post. Thanks for the post ~Rita

Ryan,

I read your blog and have to say from my experience with my crazy nonsense tagline is it has served a purpose & I am glad I have it. Would I have spent a lot of time on it no, do I think I have it right, absolutely not. I did it because I needed people to remember me, It was not designed to define all of me & my work.  that is impossible. I needed to do something to help people remember me ( I knew no one when I moved here from NY). Once the tagline helps "capture", I work so they don't want to be let go.  Yada yada yada.. I know it's late when I get on my soapbox. Good Luck and you will think of something.

My "tag line" is the name of my company, Homefinders.

Since I'm in many market areas, it's hard.

I still believe that the important thing for on line marketing of real estate services is SEO.  If you're not in the SERP on the first page no one is going to see a tag line anyway.

Kenna & Co - I've experienced that as well, and that's why this particular post resonated with me.  We have to be clear and concise to capture the attention we want.

Kara - GREAT to see you over here girl!  You've done a good job with your tagline.  It's true that we can't fully define everything we stand for, and everything we do in a tagline, but summarizing why we're here is good practice.  Keep up the great work  :)

Lenn - It's definitely hard to define when you're diversified, and yes, I agree SEO is critical.  Tagline is only one small part, but if nobody finds you, what's the point?  You know how often I see agents with FANTASTIC websites that don't rank anywhere in the searches?  What a waste!  Thanks for your comment.

Ryan, great post.  I am still trying to develop a tagline for my real estate business.  I like the fact that you say it need to be something so everyone can understand what you do and/or what you offer, when they read it.  It sounds easier than it is, however.

Troy, you're right... it's tough to sum yourself and/or your services up in a short pitch, huh?
