What is the governments role in our society?  Here are a few quotes that will make you think.

******

"The government is best which governs least." Thomas Jefferson

"Every step we take towards making the State our Caretaker of our lives, by that much we move toward making the State our Master."  Dwight Eisenhower

"If ever time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in Government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin."  Samuel Adams

"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel or envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."   Winston Churchill

"The statesman who would attempt to direct private people in what manner they ought to employ their capitals, would not only load himeslf with a most unnecessary attention, but assume an authority which could safely be trusted to no council and senate whatever, and which would nowhere be so dangerous as in the hands of a man who had folly and presumption enough to fancy himself fit to exercise it." Adam Smith

"The history of liberty is a history of limitation of government power, not the increase of it." Woodrow Wilson

"I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them."  Thomas Jefferson

"In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men the great difficulty lies in this: You must first enable the government to control the governed, and in the next place, oblige it to control itself."  Alexander Hamilton

"An oppressive government is more to be feared than a tiger."  Confucius

"Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master."  George Washington

Thanks for the reminder some wise statemen from the past.  I think our forefathers would be quite disappointed at what they would see today.

Bob - I find Wilson's quote to be very interesting when you consider that he instituted some very oppressive policies, which included infringements upon freedom of the press, freedom of speech and freedom of political thought.  And he created goon squads to enforce them. He was also strongly against the woman's vote until he realized that it would be politically expedient for him. He also ran against the war in Europe on a platform of Peace Without Victory.

These were some smart men that you included that had a lot of knowledge that we should all take some time and listen to. That is the benefit of having books of the days of old, you can learn from mistakes or successes and either not repeat the mistakes or strive to have their successes.

Thanks you for sharing! I am anxious to see the results of the election come November 5th! But I will be glad when all the political commercials stop airing :)

Kind Regards, Nicole Weidauer
