HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

Ahhhhhh the good ole' day's...or were they?  Believe it or not I was really proud of these costumes my Dad painted for my best friend Diane and I back in 1976.  Cigarettes & Matches!  What were my parents thinking???  Could you imaging trying to send your kids to school in these costumes???

Yup...that's me on the left. Aren't I Kool??  How about those fab pants! Hey...how come my Baby Bro wasn't the ashtray? Of course my Big Sis was probably the instigator in this Halloween Fiasco!

Money was tight and using what was available made perfect sense.  You should have seen us as we gracefully bumped our way into each other trick or treating door to door.

Ok so these costume's are totally GREEN but not too politically correct! :)

Debi - Yeah these costumes were great when you were getting hit with eggs!  Couldn't feel a thing!  Awwww of course you were a princess! :)

Janice- LOVE the costumes...you're right very creative.  I remember I was some type of Robot with cardboard, foil and I don';t know what...and whined the whole time because I wanted one of those $1.97 K-Mart Costumes made of plastic with that silly mask that was so new :)  How stupid I was as a kid.....

Creative that is for sure - well the pants were cute anyway.  Isn't plaid back in style?

2:09pm • #7

I think those pants are actually coming back into style on the East coast but I can't be sure.  I also think if you sent your kids to school in this day and age dressed like that you would get a stern phone call from the principal.

Hi Janice,
What a difference a few years make, right?  Come to think of it, that applies in a lot of ways.  LOL!  Love the photos and yeah, you were way Kool!

Chris - I thought you might get a kick out of this one!  But HEY you didn't share what you were for Halloween in the 70's. Come on.....

Kathy - Ha ha...you weren't stupid at all...you wanted to be an original.  Anyone could buy a costume.  I wouldn't expect anything less from you!

Steve - Now that is too funny!  I guess it's a good thing by parents didn't drink too!

Kathleen - Thanks!  Yeah I guess everything comes back around at least once!!  Your costume? :)

Ted - You're right about the phone call home.  Principals still scare me!  How come no one wants to fess up on what they were for Halloween, Ted?

Cynthia- You're are too funny!  But you didn't tell us what you were for Halloween in the KOOL 70's!

You wouldn't even want to see what we went as when you talk of no money. We had real hay rides, bon fires and loads of fun.

Hi Janice,

Who cares whether they're PC, or not. Those are great costumes! Far more creative than what you see kids in these days. And your Dad did a great making them too.

: )

NOT PC today but who cares.  Those were the good old days!  I would never let my kids were those costumes but then it was ok to smoke, everyone did!  That is an adorable picture! thanks for sharing. Mary www.activerain.com/miacovelli04

Mary - Thanks!  You're right...everyone did smoke back in the day.....sometimes the good ole' days weren't so good!  :)

Jane - I bet you made a cute witch! :)  Today some schools would send you home for that costume.  Got any pic's?  Share...share!

Oh my goodness Janice- that is completely awesome! They certainly were different days... I remember when they sold the cigarette shaped candy and the ones that would make "smoke" if you blew through them... they were marketed with slogans such as "be like dad!" Yep. very cool.. and the pants? I bet they were the hit.

Chuck - Why thank you!  Wow...what a trip back in time....candy cigarette's!  Ugh.  And the gum that they used was horrible too! :)  As for the pants....elastic waistband...what's not to like! :)

OMG, your Halloween photo is one of the funniest things I've ever seen, I LOL so hard I have tears streaming down my face!  Your costume was certainly creative, but it sure wouldn't be KOOL anymore to dress up as cigarettes (am still laughing)

I remember the candy cigarettes too, the Popeye brand, they still sell them, but they're called "candy sticks" now and there's no "red" end, holy catfish times have changed!  I remember going to the store for my mom and dad to get their cigarettes (with a note), where I live (British Columbia), you have to be 19 to purchase cigarettes, in fact, this province has some pretty strict smoke-free laws in effect!

BTW, I wore the same dang homemade clown costume for years, I grew up in northern Alberta, and we had to wear our parkas under our costumes, we looked like big, fat, stupid clowns, that's probably why I HATE CLOWNS to this day LOL

Back to your Halloween photo, thanks for the memories :)

Times have changed; what was acceptable years ago is probably not today.   As a former elementary teacher I had some kids come in for Halloween with some real creative costumes.   Everyone enjoyed them and I certainly appreciated their creativity.

Angela- LOL now that was the kind of response I was looking for!  As I was reading the part of your comment "going to the store for my mom and dad to get their cigarettes"  I was thinking I did that too!  They also gave me a note to take to the local deli to get some thin slice bologna and cigarettes!!  Crazy times.

Your clown costume OVER your parkas...now that I would love to see!!  You have got to share those pic's...please.  :)

Jon - Yes the times have changed quite a bit.  I loved homemade costumes.  They had so much more character then the store bought ones.  I wish people would use there creativity more and make there costumes vs. buying or renting.  Since we had a limited budget we HAD to be creative.  One time I word my moms shag gray wig....small glasses.....a trench coat and carried an old purse (that held my candy) and went as an old women.  Funny and kind of creepy at the same time!!!

Hey 'Sista',

I like the way you think!  I haven't done a lot for Localism, but what you say makes a lot of sense, and since I usually have my camera with me, I think that I should start taking some pics and posting some blogs about my community!

You certainly are gaining some respect and recognition in your community - way to go!

Hi Janice,  Thanks for the trip down memory lane....er, not!  In preschool I choose to be Bozo the clown because I loved his tv show.  All the other little girls were princesses and some little boy pushed me in the mud.  I don't remember this, but it is the story passed down through the years!  Cheers, Harley
