Who's Leaving the Business?

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Home Connection

Just who is going to be leaving the business this year?  We'll find out shortly since our local MLS dues have to be paid by the end of today.  Our offices in Albert Lea & Northfield, Minnesota won't see much, if any agents dropping, but I think our Owatonna office will see a few leave the business.  It's been a difficult year for many real estate professionals and ancillary businesses, but now it's going to hit home when many of the men and women I've worked with for years decide to leave for good.

I have mixed feelings about it, as I know many of you do, since it's been a subject of conversation for quite some time.  Yes, it's good to weed out the less productive agents and see them leave the business.  In fact I can think of many more less-than-professional agents who should leave our profession.  The only agents I feel badly about losing are the good ones who may have had a decent business going before the downturn, but due to lack of financial stability just weren't able to weather the current market challenges.

Hopefully by thinning the ranks we'll be able to see more transaction per the remaining agents as the less productive agents leave.  I'll keep you posted.

Ours is not due till end of January but we have had quite a few get out this year. Some say we will loose as many as 1000 agents this year. But if lost 2000 we would still ahve too many.

Here in Central Arkansas, what will tell the tale will come at the beginning of the year.  We will see who had the guts, the means, the resources, the patience and the faith that our market will come back.  It's been tough for several, but I am by no means a quitter.  This profession will have it's ups and downs, so we have to be wise enough to know how to rise to the challenge.  I love what I do, I love real estate and I am just doing what I can to reposition myself in the current market in order to offer the best service to the public.

Kathleen - We're seeing that, too.  Hopefully winter won't be as nasty as is predicted.  It's been great weather, so far!

Joyce - We need to see alot of agents leave, too.  Hopefully an exodus of agents of that number will help your business.  Best wishes.

Kevin - It sure takes all of those characteristics and then some, doesn't it? I think it's important that we all reposition ourselves to be poised for success in this changing market.  Good luck.
