We've talked about visiting the wildlife refuge many times, but it was the fear of loss that got us there this week. My husband read an article in the local paper that the refuge would be closed for the repair of the bridge on the auto-tour route. Mind you, the bridge was scheduled to be closed for a week, that's all. And in 4 years, we've never been there. But, it got my darling motivated, so off we went...
We're not bird watchers actually
My family enjoys being outdoors, and my husband enjoys driving, so the Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge Auto-Tour was the formula for the just-right experience. Hmmm...I was the one driving though...We were one of several vehicles making the loop, and some of them were obviously more serious bird people. They had binoculars and everything. We passed them at 5 mph. I saw the obvious birds - hundreds of geese and ducks, some hawks, herons, and a couple of flickers. The serious birdwatchers probably saw even more. The whole experience was really pleasant - even though we were in the vehicle, it was a good nature-experience. And of course, the autumnal colors were wonderful to behold.
These wetlands have all the stuff a naturalist could tell you about. That wouldn't be me. A patch of cattails caught my eye. My mother always loved cattails, and I guess that's why they're so special for me. My husband grew up in Minnesota and so he doesn't get impressed with the site of maturing cattails. I asked him to 'take a picturesque shot of the cattails' and he replied that cattails aren't picturesque. I think he got the pretty close to what I wanted though.
