SEO Session III-  Are You Feeding Your Spiders?

In order to keep up with this series on SEO for your Active Rain blog, outside blog and websites please read SEO Session I and SEO Session II.

What do you need to know about Search Engines?  (BTW- The abbreviation of Search Engine is SE.)

  • Indexing
  • Ranking
  • Algorithms

Out of these three, the algorithms are changed most often and seem to be the point of much contention and speculation among webmasters and SEO folks.

You will learn a bit about each of these areas but the most important SEO action step is:

Get Links To Point To Your Websites and Blogs From Theirs!

If you have a short term memory, copy and paste these words, make them big and bold and tape them to your computer so this action is in the forefront of all your SEO work.

Now and in the future you will begin to learn how to diversify. In order to really make it online you are going to have to do a combination of organic traffic and paid traffic. What better time to bring this up than now, the day after the Active Rain launch of the amazing Listing Router.

  • DO NOT use link farms, exchange link sites or buy software that guarantees that you will get links to your site.
  • DO NOT use Search Engine submission forms ( there are exceptions).

You can take any blog or any website from scratch and with a combination of  Free and Paid links to your sites and blogs you can be indexed on Google within 2 to 4 days.

We will spending some time in the near future on getting the links you will need.

Spider Behavior- Search engine spiders or Bots as some people call them. Bots is short for Robots.    seo for blogs and websites

These spiders or bots crawl the Internet looking for 'food' to bring back to the people who put in a search request in the search box of the search engines.
But how do they find the sites that they want to bring back? They find them through links from one page to another all over the Internet.
Imagine a spider crawling along a giant web, always moving from one string of that web to another, all connected. If he meets a dead end, that is to say, a site that has no link onward, it will turn around and head off of that page looking for the next link to follow.

How often do the spiders crawl?

Once you are indexed it will depend on how often you are putting up good fresh content and how many sites are linking to yours.
Before you are indexed you will need to get sites to link to you that are putting on good fresh content on their sites.

So what happens is the spider sees a page and crawls the page. If  that page has links going out of it to other sites, the spider will follow that link to the page on the next site and this goes on and on. The spider than will come back to the same pages that it crawled as long as their fresh content being put on that page.

A very important thing to remember is that the spider crawls pages not sites. So the key to getting the spider to crawl your pages on your site or blog is by getting links to all the pages on your blog or site that you want to have indexed.

If you have 30 pages on your website but links only coming in to your home page it is highly likely that is where the bot or spider will stop. The food is just not there for the spider to eat!

This part is already done for you in a lot of ways if you are really using your blog on Active Rain. Active Rain creates deep links, lots of spider food. But you must learn to link internally within your own blog on Active Rain. Read my post about internal linking. This is where you are linking from one post to other posts within your blog. Here is another post about linking that I wrote that is useful for your linking strategies.

If you have a new website or a new outside blog and want to get indexed quickly here are a few things that you can do right away to get you indexed:

  • Active Rain-  Blog with highly searched keywords

You can use  article submitting software.  This software automates the process of submitting your articles to hundreds of directories with just a click.

  • Yahoo Directory at Dir.Yahoo.com-  You can pay $299 per year to Yahoo to be placed in their directory. The benefits are worth the cost.

They will review your site within 1 week.
They will guarantee that your site will get indexed in all the search engines. Your site rankings will get a boost and your site will be in the Yahoo search index.

  • Directory Submitter- There are thousands of free website directories and you can find software that will do that fast for you. The more directories you submit to, the more one way links you will get that will be pointing to your site, which will cause you to rank higher. Remember, this can not be said enough, it is all about the links you get!

Your homework for this week is:

Perform weekly searches across all 3 of the major Search Engines. Learn about your competition.

Study your keywords 1 hour monthly. Do you keyword research and do it monthly. People change what they are searching for and you need to stay on top of it.

Do not search with the keywords that you think a consumer is using, you need to find out the words they are using and then have those words become your new keywords.

See you next week! Since we are going to be at NAR this week - or SEO Sessions will resume the week after! Have fun and we look forward to meeting you all at NAR!  Keep in touch, we will go over some cool ways for you to discover your back links next time!

Thomas- You must continue doing the basics, always go back to what got you there in the first place and do it consistantly. Yes, it is a job, but very rewarding because the customers you get are well worth the investment.

Katerina, especially if you can get high reputable websites linking to your website, that really pays off.  I was told that google did not like having links to other agents websites (Advance Access techs were one of the sources of info), have you heard of this?

Thank you for this information.  I'll be honest, I have not read the series yet, but I have a lot to learn about SEO.  I'll be reading all three series.  Thank you in advance though, I look forward to it.

How long does it take to for SEO optimization techniques to change organic results in Google.  If the sites above us optimize then I would assume you can't position above them.

Hi Katerina!  GOOD stuff coach!  I would love to have about 8 additional hours per day to work on this SEO information as I understand it now but, have about 30 domains that I would like to optimize.  I do it for my main sites and have been working on redirecting those domains and cancelling sites that are just sitting there pulling in a couple of hits per month.  Not really worth the effort without having them all optimized, is it?  Thanks for this awesome post Katerina!

Hi Katerina and Nester, You have a done a brilliant job here putting technology that few really understand into layman's terms that is understandable. Wonderful and your whole series should be a permanent feature for anyone really wanting to understand and make this an actual work in progress for their sites. Wonderful!

Hi again, my apologies, I was eating and typing with one hand and instead of hitting the IE spell checker, I hit the word submit. Perhaps you can do a post on multitasking while trying to write comments and what can go wrong, lol.

Katerina, great information. Have you heard of Blackwater Consulting Group and Compass Internet Systems? They charge a lot more than the Yahoo figure you gave and do monthly coaching but honestly, the 'coaches' know nothing about real estate so it has been a somewhat frustrating process for me. I feel like I've been fed pablum when I want to have steak!

How do you know which keywords consumers are using? I mean, google doesn't just give them to you. What do you do, keep typing different ones until you start getting ones with larger numbers of hits? Thanks in advance if you have time to answer. Hope to see you at NAR!

Sharon- I coach people who are stuck in contracts with them and they will not let them out of the contracts even though they have done nothing of any real consequence for these clients. I paid for a optimization package from them and they did not even change but one of my keywords. This was when I had just finished studying about SEO, so then after I put into practice all that I learned and changed my website to point 2, I did my own keywords, title tags and description. That is when I went to #1. You can ask any agent that I am coaching if I am worth my salt. This is something I am very confident about because I can take anyone to the top.

You can look up my tags for keyword research. There are some posts there that I have written about how to do your keyword research. Of course google gives them to you. Just use their keyword tool. They have it all set up for adwords. You have to set up an adwords account, but you don't have to use it. Just sign up so you can use their keyword tool. I purchased software that does all the major SEs all at one time on one screen. I love keyword research.

I just started coaching a new agent in Mass. We discovered a gem of a keyword that has absolutely NO competition yet it has a lot of searches each month. We hit the gold mine! That is what is so exciting. I will write another post about keyword research since that seems to be the most misunderstood part of SEO.

You have to take the time to discover them, research. What you think people are searching for is usually not the case and if it is, most agents choose keywords that are SO competitive they will not be able to own them. But you really don't want those ones either. Too much for a comment.....

Are you going to go to the Active Rain party Saturday Night at 8 p.m.?

Brad and Angela- What google does not like is the link exchanging that goes on within agents websites, agents trading links. Those cancel out each other. You can have links from higher page rank agent sites if they are one way to you and if they make sense. Google is working on getting this part down better to understand the relationships between areas. Like here in Florida, we would love to have someone in Canada linking to us. But will google undestand that there is a logical reason for that? They are working on it.

William- Thanks so much! Thank you for reading our series. I just love this SEO stuff and all the internet marketing and web 2.0- I really found home when I decided to delve in and learn all that I could find out about getting to the top of google. It is quite amazing when you think about how many sites and blogs there are!

Carole- Good for you! I have done some of that but I climbed very fast using the link backs from forums and of course, Active Rain. I would love to do a lot more. I love the Article Submitter software that I bought, because it will send my article out to 100's of directories.

Fred- That depends on how competitive your keywords are. It can take anywhere from 2 hours to 6 months. I do a keyword brainstorming session with my coaching clients to discover the keywords that they will rank fast for that are the least competitive. Sometimes you gotta start with the long tail! But you can always unseat the top dog! We have all done it. If they are optimized, you just got to beat them at their own game.

Debe- I wish I had another 8 hours to do more too! I have some of the most awesome ideas and no time to implement them. I know you are doing great. Get rid of the dead weight! Read Missy's post about the IDX and the new Listing router, cool stuff!

That is why I coach against having many websites, you are only competing against yourself.

Katerina,

thanks for the information.  For your information I clicked on the join you blog link above and I got the error message that I was not a member or several other possible reasons for blocking the link.  I tried logging in to active rain again, no luck.  Do you know what is going on there, I am kind of new to this blogging and posting thing?

Katerina - Regarding agents trading links which cancels each other out, does Google only frown on agent to agent trading links, or is that across the board?  What if we want to trade links with an inspector or lender, do they cancel each other out?  I understand the one way links from other agents, but of course that would not benefit the other agent, does not make sense unless they are real generous.  I wish google would understand that agent to agent links would benefit sellers that are relocating to another state, they would have a list of agents to choose from that state that they are relocation to.  Hope that makes sense, can be confusing.

OK Everyone! There are a lot of questions here in the comments. Most of them will be answered in this SEO series. Instead of answering them here and then again in a post, I will try to get the post ready about backlinks, checking them, etc in a post next week and also a post about more on the keyword research as that still is a point of many questions and I see that most people still do not use the correct keywords.
