Clayton, North Carolina...The Proposed Historic District Presentation on November 13th, 2008

Yesterday, I had an appointment in Clayton, NC. While I was there, I decided to drive downtown to catch a glimpse of the little ones who were lined up and eager to trick-or-treat down Main Street. The road was already blocked when I arrived, but I did have the opportunity to see several mermaids, Spiderman, a really muscular blue guy (not sure of his name), an Indian princess, blue-haired twins and a few other cute characters.

Established in 1770, Clayton, NC is a small town in Johnston County. As you can see from the photographs, downtown Clayton is much the same today as it has been for many generations. Most of the buildings were constructed between 1890 and 1960.

Just last Fall, Nancy Van Dolsen…a National Register consultant…assisted the Town of Clayton to prepare the nomination for Clayton’s Historic District. The proposed historic district consists of 207 contributing buildings and structures and 64 non-contributing buildings and structures.

The B.M. Robertson Mule Co...in the photograph below...is one of Clayton's oldest businesses. In business since 1902, B.M. Robertson sold farm equipment and mules. Back in the day, the building would hold up to 50 mules at a time...each selling for $250 to $350.

On Tuesday, November 13th, there will be an informational presentation that is open to the public.  The meeting will be held in the Poole Room at The Clayton Center at 7pm. The Clayton Center is located at  111 E. Second Street in Clayton, NC. Nancy Van Dolsen is scheduled to review the process for becoming a historic district and present the draft of the proposed Clayton Historic District.

Elizabeth:  What I want to know... is whether or not Carol arrived in town early enough for the two of you to get dressed up to go Trick-Or-Treating ?  If not... just get dressed up next weekend, and if anyone asks... just tell them you got confused... LOL.

By the way... great pictures and post.  Take care...

Clayton is like so many of the small towns in Alabama.  It reminds me of all the trips to my Grandmother's house in south Alabama.

Hi Elizabeth,
My Dad grew up in Clayton and he and my Mom lived there until 1972.  They have taken me by the house where they lived on Barnes Street and I've often wondered how different my life might have been had they decided to stay there.
