The title of this post was a quote from yours truly during the recent Real Estate Barcamp in Houston during a discussion led by Paul Chaney about social media and its effectiveness.  This pretty much sums up my personal perspective on the act of blogging as it applies to my business.

When I first started blogging four years ago on another platform, I used it just for personal opinions, rather than anything that I thought could actually help me make money.  You may be surprised to learn that many of my posts were political in nature, considering the fact that I have written exactly ONE post on that topic here on ActiveRain, and that was yesterday!

I was invited to join AR back in December 2006, so I set up a quick profile, then proceeded to do.......absolutely nothing

Well, I did write one post in March 2007, so that must be when I really got rolling, right?

Wrong.

I didn't return again until August 4, 2007, when I wrote this gem of a post:

Austin Real Estate Market

Truthfully, that might just have been my shortest post on record.  Perhaps there are those of you who long for me to return to such simplicity.  :)

After I got the hang of things around here, I started regularly posting 10 times/weekly, with very few exceptions.  This may seem like drudgery or highly time-consuming, but it is neither.  I sincerely enjoy writing, sharing information, and making new friends, which I have since found out is the essence of a solid social media strategy.

I am happy to have received a good number of leads, referrals, and closing from my ActiveRain blog, but I would probably have continued consistently posting even without the concrete results.

But why?

Well, that's easy.  This network has brought me so much good knowledge and so many friends that it has been well worth the investment of my time.  Since the economy has been much less strong over the past year, this has enabled me to devote a certain amount of time every week to blogging.  When the market makes a turn (and it will likely turn around in Austin before many other areas of the country), I feel that I have done a reasonably effective job of getting my name out there to other real estate professionals who have the potential to send me business, all while having fun, too.  How great is that?

So, if you're new to blogging, I have a few words of advice:

  • Write a lot - It doesn't even matter what you write about, as long as it isn't offensive - just do it.  The process of committing to a certain amount of content will make you a better writer over time.
  • Read a lot - There is a wealth of terrific advice, tips, and news here to be found.  It's much like having a stack of real estate and blogging textbooks at your fingertips 24/7.
  • Don't expect immediate results - This is not the type of thing that will necessarily bring quick leads/prospects.  Don't be discouraged by that - continue to plug away and it will happen.
  • Take advantage of the Google leverage that AR has developed - you will be found!  Post it and they will come.
  • Explore other sites, too (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Flickr, etc.).  I have received leads from several of these during my foray into social networking over the past 16 months or so.
  • Don't worry about comparing yourself to others, or trying to model others' writing style.  Just be you (and I know that sentence isn't grammatically correct - who cares?).

I hope this stuff comes in handy for you.  Feel free to ask any questions you might have.  Thanks for reading!

I know this will work. My broker told me about AR in 2006 and boy do I wish I had stated then. But that's okay, I get it now and am putting in the time to catch up. You taught me how to insert pix in your tutorial and I can do it but sometimes I am just so slow! And I really want to learn more html to do cool colors, fonts, better picture placement. Sigh, all in due time! Thanks for all the help and encouragement you give us :)

Jason  -

Here's to you, man!   I'm like you - so call when you get writer's block.

The act of reading and writing drives important facts in your head, and helps make you the Real Estate Expert for your constituency, and your community.  It also drives people to your website, and your blog.

But it also helps form relationships, associations, and interdependence with others that just might give you a fresh business idea every few days or so.  And you likely wouldn't have been able to achieve this without a little help from AR.

Yes, there are days you don't seem to have it in you to write a post.  Here, the tempation may be to not write at all, or, worse yet, do some copy and paste just to get the points.

Like you, I resist both!  Keep posting habitual, expand your net, as well as your desire to share with other like minded professionals, and you'll flourish!

Drop in anytime!

Jason- You have come a looong way since that 8/4/07 post!  That gives me hope; maybe I'll get my act together soon and just start writing more.  It's been a challenge to avoid "paralysis through analysis."  Sometimes it's better to just do something and let the chips fall where they may.

Jason - Active Rain is an every evening must for me. As soon as I finish my inspection report I first look at The Texas Groups to see what's happening. I put out a blog approximately 3-4 times a week, not much to do with home inspection but write articles about happenings in our local area. Like you have developed friendships, shared information and Active Rain in part of our daily life.

Hi Jason~  I, too, agree with Lisa! This network is amazing. There's not enough hours in a day to keep up with the wealth of info here. Each writer has their own personal print, thus, the journey of finding which voice speaks to me most consistently keeps me reading day after day. And yes, Jason Crouch is one of them. =)

Hi Jason-I like your detailed blogs so I hope you don't change your style because I enjoy it very much and I'm sure others do as well. This post is so informative as well as true. Even though I haven't got any business so far I've made some good friends and enjoy it here immensely because of the friends you get to meet, that otherwise you would never have the privilege of knowing them and all the valuable info from so many highly intelligent people. Where else could you get this kind of education, FREE? Nowhere that I know of. I've learned a lot since joining AR but have so much more to learn. So continue in your wonderful style of blogging that we all enjoy so much regardless of the length of it. I myself have a tendency to be detailed and write longer blogs. I used to call it long winded and a good friend I met here told me it wasn't that. It was detailed. I liked that better. So keep up the detailed comments cause we all love them and the people that don't then it's their loss. Take care and have a blessed week.

I also believe you've got to make a commitment to blogging for it to work. I recently set a schedule where I post a real estate related post, then one or two localism posts, every few days. They key is consistency. I'm finding that localism is working, but only if you give the public what they want: good solid local info!

Blogging is a Long-Term Strategy with the Potential for Short-Term Results

Hi Jason,

I really like how you skillfully summarized blogging.  I try to get my clients to think long-term.  Our society has become too focused on short-term results, which has hurt our country.  The way I see it, short-term results from blogging are like icing on the cake.

Respectfully,

Bruce

I just learned about AR a couple of weeks ago and have just done a little reading and finally some commenting.  I want to write a Blog, but haven't because I want it to be good and am unsure what to write about.  I really enjoy the reading and learning and all of the insight I am gaining.   On Friday I took the featured member in my area to lunch to pick her brain and she gave me the same advice as you, JUST DO IT!

So stay tuned, my first blog will be coming soon-hopefully today.

I could not agree more, you have to commit to blogging and social networking and you will reap the rewards. It is not a short term prospect. I have learned as much if not more from the comments here on AR. Every single day I learn something new and you cannot say that about most any other venue or network on the internet.

So blog on everyone and I am now going to check out the photorack website. I have seen almost immediate google juice from some of the active rain and other posts I have made on other platforms of which I am a member and that is quite rewarding.

Thanks for you post!

Jason- I took a look at that August 2007 post.  LOL   As they say, You've come a long way baby!

Like you, I was invited and joined AR in December 2006.  I entered my profile and wrote a post, pointing to another blog - pathetic.  I followed that with another post in February 2007.  My next post didn't appear until January 2008.  That's where our stories diverge.  While I became a regular reader (read that addicted) and somewhat consistent commenter, I never quite mastered the weekly post, much less ten per week.

You're blogging is impressive and it's obviously paid off, for you.  I've yet to receive a lead or referral from AR, although a few people, I know, have mentioned reading my blog.  I agree, that the information shared on this network, alone, is worth the time spent.  I have gotten to know many of the more popular bloggers, even if they have yet to discover me.  In the meantime, you've set a high bar, but it just gives the rest of us, a lofty goal to try to achieve.

"Don't expect immediate results - This is not the type of thing that will necessarily bring quick leads/prospects.  Don't be discouraged by that - continue to plug away and it will happen."    I am taking that to mean someone finding my posts and being interested in me as a realtor. That's a really good reminder -- especially for someone like me who lives on fast forward.  I am 'meeting' via posts and comments some really great people that I've love to know in person sometime. Great as usual Jason!  It is important to keep going with the right attitude on AR.  The results may take some time but you will grow so much in the meantime.

JL - Thanks!  I bet your efforts here will begin to pay off.

DONNA - I really appreciate that.  Thanks for reading!

REBECCA - That sounds like a post in itself.  I have something along those lines planned.  You should write one, too!

VICKI - That makes me happy.  I am glad to be of help!

ELIZABETH - You are always so nice.  Your glowing comments brighten my day.  I am praying for your daughter - please update us as you can.

BRAD - Thanks!  This has been my philosophy since I started here last year, and I sincerely think that AR will be a big part of my business for years to come.  Have a terrific day!

SUSIE - I'm happy that you found this to be valuable, even after being a part of ActiveRain for a year now.  You are spot-on - this has amazing potential, but so many don't "get it" yet.

VICTOR - Bring that buyer!  :)  I enjoy the fact that you are inspired by my writing - there is no greater compliment with regard to blogging.

JUDY - Both are helpful, right?  Thanks!

LAURA - It should come, but it's not a quick fix generally speaking.  I hope you get some sales from your efforts soon!

MICHAEL - You're welcome!

TRACY - Sometimes it seems like longer, but usually it feels like it went by really quickly.  Thanks for stopping by - glad you liked it!

I'm taking the advice here and sticking with it. I'm posting mostly on my own site and the stories are very local. I'm glad to hear that it's worth the effort!

HI JASON!

Yes, it sure does come in handy!  It never hurts to be reminded of what you know.  I know that AR does carry lots of google weight.  B4 you could find me nowhere on google, now I'm there & in the first 3 pages (most times)!

Timely for me.  Sometimes I wonder if I'll achieve what I ultimately envision for my blog.  Hate when I start second guessing myself.  This was a good reminder to stay the course.

Hi Jason,

Practice makes "Maybe not perfect", but a whole lot better than before.  I will continue to practice.  Thanks for reminding us to stay the course.

Hey Jason,

Great tips, motivation and insight. This comment is the first thing I've ever typed on AR, other than my profile! I'm sure I'm not alone in wondering "...Where will I find the time???" But like everything else, when you see the value you MAKE the time. It's been a year and a half since I first read other Realtors blogs on AR and for sure, it's time to jump in.

Your encouragement is appreciated by many of us.

Jason,

Great advice!  I've had a lot of success since I started blogging.  The more I blog, the more go to my website, the more leads I get.  It's all a matter of how much exposure you get, which blogging does for you.  So, everyone, keep on blogging!!

Blogging is a Long-Term Strategy with the Potential for Short-Term Results

Hey Jason,

Being the incurably curious type, I have discovered something that will interest you.  I just went to Google and did this search: blogging long-term strategy

Guess what?  Your excellent post is already ranked number three out of about 7,400,000 results!  :)

Great post !  Nice being the 100th comment : )  I really like the longer term strategy.  You are an inspiration as you have accomplished so much over not that long of a time.  Even with a 1 year time frame that is obviously a lot of time to build ones internet presence and such.  Very very cool !

Hi Lori Lincoln!

My 1st night on Active Rain & saw you immediately!  Actually in a few places!   I will certainly need some help here if you or anyone else can.  Seems like you really know how to tool around. How does this create more business & networking??!??!

Your fellow Realtor friend and Appraiser,

Carol

Hi Jason ~

It's been a long time....but decided to login today and found this post.  I saw quick and early results with my own blogging but in plain honesty, got bored very quickly with it.  It's not that I don't understand the significance of it all I just can't find the inspiration.  I love to write, encourage, and learn anything I can to become more productive in what I do and yet it's been a struggle to maintain that desire here on AR.  In some ways ~ and I don't mean to be offensive ~ I felt like I was rummaging through goods at a thrift store looking for that hidden treasure.  I just kept coming across post after post of the same old stuff but wanted, needed something new.  That isn't to say the posts have nothing of value...I was just looking for something that would spark something in me and couldn't find it, and I didn't want to post just for the sake of posting.

Obviously I haven't given up completely because here I am...still looking, still waiting for the inspiration to return, and still hopeful that one day it will.

Thanks Jason for advice - I am trying to improve my on-line presence.  I am getting clients and now I have people calling me for other things because they found my number online.  and I agree with you - you don't have to be perfect to blog!

Have a great day!

Jason,

Thank you for the advice.   I have just joined AR.  I am looking forward to posting my first blog on AR.   In the mean time, I am getting educated by reading the blogs of other people.   Yours was very well written and sets a good example to follow.
