Last week we got our first really cold weather, including a couple of frosts. Luckily, I had been harvesting much of the remaining summer veggies. In fact the day of the first frost, I harvested the remaining eggplants and bell peppers. Large or small, they all were harvested as the only other option was to leave them to the succumb to the chill of fall.

I have enjoyed my garden tremendously this summer. It is not time to say goodbye just yet as the cooler weather veggies are doing quite well and enjoying their preferred climate. The cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, leaf lettuce and spinach are happily growing just as their summer counterparts had. Here are some photos from immediately after the first frost.

The wild flowers say adieu.

The green are the cool weather veggies.

Rich I will be so glad when it is Spring again.  I hate winter even though it doesn't get that cold here!

Rich, You're probably healthier eating your own food that's homegrown and super fresh.  I loved seeing your garden and look forward to it coming back to life!

Chris - It is always a learning process with the plants, which ones will work. The best piec of advice as far as constructing the garden is plan it out (even a rough sketch) with dimensions before even going to the store. And make sure you have a circular or jig saw if you have to do much cutting, it will save your arms.

Jack - I love cilantro and use it in everything! I have never tried to grow herbs, maybe next year.

Gayle - I am not a fan of winter at all because I don't like the cold. The bare trees do have a stark beauty though.

Carole - They just taste fresher, and I know there have been no chemicals sprayed on them nor put in the soil. It will be back come spring!

Rich, I am just planted peas, onions, kale, chard, and beans a few weeks ago. I am trying to salvage the garden, and see if I can get a harvest before the first frost, and early spring.

It is very sad to see the plants you took the time to plant water and fertilize die... but you get to start all over next year

Frank - Good luck with them! I had great black-eyed peas and speckled lima beans this summer. Onions, not so good.

Patt - It is, but I will do it all again next year!

Joan - We have only had a couple of nights below freezing but it was enough to kill the wildflower garden and most of the summer veggies. Luckily, I knew the frost was coming so I was able to harvest most of the veggies before hand. We should be getting hard frost tonight or in the next couple of days.
