I'd like to ask that you keep my family in your thoughts and prayers.

On Saturday night, we received a frantic phone call that my brother in law experienced a massive heart attack.  My husband and I dropped everything immediately and drove to NJ to be with my sister in law and her children, not to mention my older son who is living with them.  They were kind enough to open their home to my son so that he has a comfortable place to live while he commutes to NYC for work as a young, (broke) college graduate.  We've always been a very close family, and my husband and I stayed up in the ICU waiting room all night long while my brother in law underwent an emergency quadruple bypass surgery.

My son was just beside himself with worry, thinking that he might have been the only one home when the heart attack happened and didn't realize that his uncle might have needed help.  He woke up from a nap to find everyone gone and worried voicemails trying to get in touch with him.  It turns out that my niece had just gotten home when my brother in law fell ill, and she took him to the emergency room right away.

We got to the NJ hospital at about 11pm, driving like fiends from Lancaster.  We stayed there through the night and the next day, with only a 3 hour reprieve early Sunday morning to meet our nephew who flew back home from a weekend trip to Florida.  My poor nephew was frantically trying to get a red-eye flight back home, and 5 am was the earliest he could find one.  That seems like a lifetime when you are so far apart from your family during an emergency.

We left NJ late Sunday night to come back home, thinking that our brother in law was recuperating well.  We heard today that he is taking a turn for the worst, so I think I'll be leaving again on Tuesday to spend a few days there to help and offer support.

He's a hard working man with a heart of gold and has always opened his heart, home and wallet to anyone needing help.  While visiting with him on Sunday night before we left for home, he grasped our hands and apologized if he had ever said anything to ever hurt us.  We left with a heavy heart.

My sister in law hasn't slept or left his side in 3 days.  We're all worried about her well-being now, as well, as she will surely drop of exhaustion.  Concentrating on work today has been difficult, especially since both my husband and I had been up for about 40 hours straight this weekend.

I don't even know if I'll have time to vote on Tuesday, and sadly it now seems so trivial.  I can only think of my family's well-being and being by their side at a time like this.

So please, keep us in your thoughts and pray for my brother in law's improved health.  And enjoy every moment with your loved ones.  Tell them often how much they mean to you.

Jeannie,

I'm sorry to hear about your brother-in-law's health issues. These events are always a reminder to enjoy life to the fullest and not to take our health for granted.

I hope he pulls through and gets well soon.

Keep your chin up.

Cynthia -- Barry -- Loren -- Thank you for your kind words, prayers and thoughts.

Unfortunately, many of us take our health for granted.  He ignored his high cholesterol for too long, not taking it seriously enough.  Luckily he made it to the hospital in time.  It's certainly a wake up call for us to try to live healthier lives.

Thank you again for your kind comments.

Brigita - thank you so much.  I am in NJ now, just helping out wherever I can.  Its sad to see my brother in law in his condition, as he was always a very "in command" type of person.  I have to say, though, that he is a great patient and the nurses love him.  He is still in ICU, much longer than they had hoped he would be.  Hopefully he will take a turn for the better soon.

Thank you for your prayers.
