It's Not All About The Comments- The Secrets Beyond The Comments!

A while back I was reading a post that had some very good content. The blogger was very upset that she had worked so hard to put together this post and only had a couple of comments. While it is very exciting to get comments on your blog, there is more to blogging that the comments and there are way more people reading your blog than make comments.

Just because you are not getting a lot of comments does not mean that people are not reading your blog. The first thing that I always ask is; Do you know who is reading your blog and who is your audience? Because nothing else matters. If you don't know who your audience is then you are just throwing stuff out there and hoping some of it will stick.

If you are writing for buyers and sellers then pay special attention to this post. Understand that very rarely do non members write comments, very rarely will a consumer post a comment on your blog. But they are reading. You bet they are! If you are writing good content and consistently- you have consumers reading your blog.

So while they may not be leaving you comments, they are reading. How can you find this out?

The beauty of the Statistics of Active Rain!
It's Not All About The Comments- The Secrets Beyond The Comments!
Go to your home page and on the bottom left side you will see a link that says, Statistics. It looks like this:

active rain statistics tutorial

Click on that link and it will take you to your statistics page.

active rain statistics tutorial

On your statistics page you will find some treasures that if you mine these gems in the right way; you will have more readers and your phone will ring with buyers and sellers who will want to work with you.

Here you will see the name of your post, the number of comments that you received, the number of views you had and the number of click throughs.

active rain statistics

Of course the number of comments is obvious. But I also wanted to draw you to this interesting observation. If you are writing for members of Active Rain and you get a post with a lot of comments like the one here where I had  over 100 comments, you will notice that I also had a huge amount of views. The tutorial I wrote about getting the most of using your name fields in your Active Rain profile for Google juice got 119 comments from members and 2866 views. There were many people who read that post and only relatively a small portion who commented.

active rain statistics tutorial

Now, this is where the good stuff is! You see that the posts that  I wrote about our listings get very few comments. This is a given as most members are not chomping at the bit to make comments on listings around Active Rain.

But look at the amount of views these posts get!

Then what is even better is look at the amount of click throughs they get. If I go to mybloglog stats I will see that most of those click throughs are to our website to get more information about the listing or to Vflyer for more information.  You can see that on our Short Sale Country Golf listing Vflyer that we only got 1 comment on that post. But look at how many views. 1372 views and better still 74 click throughs. Now, because we have a Point 2 agent professional website, we can track each one of the visitors that comes from our blog on Active Rain to our website down to even their IP address.

We can use all of this information to develop more content for these consumers and readers. By spending some time each week in finding out where the readers are coming from and where they are going and what they are reading will  help us develop more content that they are looking for. That is why we write a lot about short sales. If we create this good quality content, the listings will keep on coming.

So don't fret, don't cry over not getting comments! Instead, come and take a look at who is reading your blog!  It just may put a smile on your face!

Gosh, learn something new every day...statistics was something I have not paid much attention to...my website has statistics on it but I'm not sure if it will show that level of detail that your point2 website does...thanks for the information!

I've found the same thing. The posts about my lisitngs or neighborhoods get very few comments. But they get a lot of hits, and that's the idea of the whole thing- market to the consumers.

thanks for an informative post. I'll have to check out your other post mentioned about getting the most juice from your name fields.

Katerina - you make good points here today . . . and you are right that very few comments are received in listings, however, the consumers are still looking at those posts.

Hello Everyone! Thank you so much for all of your comments!  I will not be able to return all of your comments on this post. There are now 78 wonderful comments that I treasure so much.

We are getting ready to go to NAR and have to tie up loose ends today so we can head out. Stuff to do and time to spend with my son- lots of hugs and playtime before we leave cause I am going to miss him so much!

If I do not address your questions here, they will get addressed in a new post as some of the answers are lengthy.

See many of you there and those that aren't; be there in spirit!

Thanks Katerina for explaining this to us. I looked at my statistics and was surprised that my listing had been viewed so many times. That is encouraging. Enjoy NAR! ~Pat

Hi Katerina,

Thanks for the clear explanation of how the statistics work.  I had a vague idea, but not really.  Now I will have a better idea of what is really going on in my world.  I think that is a good thing.

Katerina this was a good post.  I actually forgot all about the statistics for our blog.  I do have one question.  What is the difference between a view and click through??

Hi Katerina! Great post. Its so true sometimes I get hardly and comments or none at all, but a lot of views. I don't have it set up so that people outside of AR can comment....maybe I should change that. I receive business and calls from this blog and thats whats more important to me....my clients love that I have a blog they can read and they call me if they have any questions. :)

Aloha Katrina,

I always wondered what the click through meant in the statistics section, thanks for the explanation.

My first thought was to leave a comment about how much can be gleaned from the statistics, then I saw that you already had 89 comments and started to move away from the page - becoming one of those numbers in the 'viewed' column, not in the comment column!  I would have proved your point that people read the post, form an impression, but don't necessisarily comment...

Katerina, I agree some time back I started to see the increase in my website traffic. I have not had a post which generated a lot of comments but I sure do enjoy my increase in traffic.

Hi Katerina!  Once again, you are SO right!  After all, isn't this a 'business' tool for us to use?  Alot of Rainers complain about the listings but, this is a great example that the public IS looking at our listing online and ON ACTIVE RAIN!
