tree

I think I am becoming a tree hugger!

I have worked diligently over the last 6 months to minimize the number of catalogs that come into my home.  It has become a game for me to see how effective my campaign is as we fall into the holiday season and the storm of catalogs that usually begin appearing in early November.  I have attempted to stem the tide by using Catalog Choice and I have also resorted to sitting with my latest stack and calling the customer service lines of these same companies.

The reality of all of this is that a cancelled catalog does not mean I plan to buy less (but wouldn't that be great!)  I am a stager after all!  It is my job to buy!  I buy all of the time.  But guess what?  I can save innumerable trees if I sit curled up with my wireless laptop as I watch TV and thumb through virtual pages of on-line catalogs.  I find better deals and I really save a lot of trees!

Here's to a nice holiday season with a lighter recycle bin!

Jo,  I've been subscribed to Catalog Choice for over a year now, and slowly my pile of catalogs has dwindled, as hoped ... however there are some catalog companies who seem to ignore the request and keep sending them to me.  Now I'll try your back-up method of phoning the customer service dept and requesting demanding they remove my name.

Jo: I call and cancel catalogs, but the minute you order something the catalogs start flowing in again. Its very frustrating. Sometimes we will get 3 and 4 copies of the same catalog, plus we get them for the man we bought our house from, and he moved in 2001! I will try out Catalog Choice. I haven't heard of it. Thanks!

Hi ActiveRainers - Chuck from Catalog Choice here.

Three things you can do:

1. Use the service and tell everyone else to do the same - the larger our membership the louder our voice with the merchants.  We are a non-profit!

2. When you call non-complying merchants, demand that they honor requests from Catalog Choice.  If you can get one more merchant to sign up to our service, you will help thousands of others.  Our staff is small (2 full time, 2 part time), so any help we can get from our members is great.

3. When it is time to shop, go to http://catalogchoice.org/cool_catalogs and start shopping with the merchants who honor mail preference requests.

Thanks,

Chuck

Ohh... what a wonderful solution to all those catalogs in the mail!  I've not heard of catalog choice, but intent to check it out and start working on saving trees myself!  Thanks for sharing.
