I have been asked to provide a brief description of BNI for those that are unfamiliar with it.

BNI is Business Networking International, Inc.  It was started in CA by Dr. Ivan Misner.  Now, BNI has a presence in all 50 states and several countries via local chapter and regional directors.

The idea of BNI is to bring together "unique" professions into a local chapter in order to build trust and refer business.  By unique, I mean only that no 2 paints, electricians, or Realtors can belong to the same chapter.  Each chapter is limited to one representative from each professional category.

Through weekly, structured meetings, the members of the local chapter act as a sales force for each other.  Chapter membership is highly competitive and very desired.  Professions such a financial planner, CPA, insurance producer, and Realtor can benefit greatly from membership and participation.

You can search www.bni.com for a chapter in your area.  Go visit a chapter and judge for yourself.  Most chapters meet in the morning, once per week.  Some complain about early morning meetings, but it can be a real boost to your day's productivity.

I have gotten 3 of my biggest referrals ever from my local chapter.  I was invited to be President of my chapter for 10-08 through 9-09.  We have renewed our motivation and are changing our culture.

Try it!!

I was a sub for a woman in a BNI group this morning. I got to meet close to 30 people I have not met before. I sat next to someone that said he wanted to get together later this week and discuss a business connection. I was also able to past an appraiser friend's card to a mortgage person that didn't know him. I sat in front of a commercial Realtor that asked for my card. I do commercial inspections as well as residential.

So yes, 7am is early (I got there at 6:40 am to network before the meeting), but if any of the three connections I made today turn into business, then it was well worth it.

One of the long time bloggers here, Russell Ray (a home inspector in San Diego) I discovered is a fan of BNI and actually has some autographed books by Dr. Misner. It's a small world out there.

BNI has been very good for my business.

I love my BNI group.  Not only do I get referrals, but I have built srong relationships with key people in my group such as the RE lawyer, mortgage and insurance person.  I can call them anytime any day and my questions/problems are addresses right away.  This impresses my clients and they are gratefull for the great service.

It is an interesting group. I have tried to form or join one but given that my business is not quite local, it is not to my best benefit. Now with the internet, I think there is something similar but different group.

Richard - Congratulations on your offer to be president; BNI is a good source for referrals.
