LinkedIn Becomes More than A Profile -or- The On-Line Resume'

Here's a post that I just couldn't resist. LinkedIn.com has announced some really cool new features to their site. Up until now, I think many have just considered this site to be a place to have a profile, an on-line resume', or the place to be if you're anybody in any business. I think most members on ActiveRain are probably on LinkedIn already, and if not, should be.

Just today, I have already incorporated two of their new features to my LinkedIn profile which is now a syndicated site to host my Blogs and other more useful information. I just added the ability to have posts from my various Blogs show up right on the profile. Check out BlogLink. You can even have Google Docs and presentations there.

Here's some of the other items they've added that you can include:

Box: Collaborate and share files with your friends and network.

Huddle: Create private work areas to share projects.

Amazon: Find out what the rest of your network is reading.

TripIt: Check out and follow your traveling network.

SixApart: Keep up to date with your networks latest posts.

Google Docs: Add and embed presentations on your profile page.

SlideShare: View, comment, and share presentations.

WordPress: Promote your latest WordPress Posts.

CompanyBuzz: See what others are saying about your Company.

I haven't had the chance to setup and try or test all of these yet, but at least we know that LinkedIn is trying hard to become more than just a place to host your Resume' and Profile. They've built that reputation to some extent, and now looks like they might be trying and live up to the their name instead. LinkedIn.

I personally like what they've done. That means this post should appear on my LinkedIn profile now. (once you're logged in) Don't forget to add YOUR AR Blogs there too.

I like the concept of Linkedin and I am registered with a sizable netowrk, BUT for whatever reason their server is extremely slow, in fact so slow that it times out before I can evern access anything. That happens about 75% of the time? At the same time I can access activerain and facebook without issue.

Is it just me?

Brad, I'm trying the blog link now. It's taking a long time to import, so hopefully I'm doing it right.

Just read over on LinkedIn about these new features and several of them are of interest. LinkedIn is fast becoming multi-dimensional which is good for its members.

Fran - LinkedIn is Huge, rumor has it, there's 8,000,000 there.

Russell - that ones pretty obvious I hope. :-)))

Chris - I have never really experienced that, but it being more a profile or resume spot before, I didn't spend hardly any time there. Just approving network friendships mostly. Now I'm a bit more interested. You might try another browser and see if it runs any faster.

Gabe - It could be that there are sooo many people checking it out today, I'm sure. It took a while to load mine as well, I still have to go over and see if this post is showing up there. I'm curious how many link backs I'll get from it being there?? Just be patient.

Linda - what do you mean finish the last one, that was a copyright post, LOL, that's not a good sign... :-O

Jeremy - the BlogLink is one of the best features, in my opinion...

Jason - me too, I really didn't spend much time there other than to recommend and endorse a few people, and accept a couple of my own. Other than that, it always had that resume' testimonial feel to it.

Gary - it'll be more powerful there only as it starts to drive you business from being linked here!?! We should start a new group called "LinkedHere" LOL~ :-)

I set my AR outside blog on the LinkedIn bloglink. It pulled in the blog but when I try to access the full blog post it goes to a window with an error post. Is this an AR problem or a LinkedIn problem? Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Carol - try my links, see if it opens ok for you. I just checked it on my end and it worked fine. LMK. I also see you weren't logged into AR, that may have something to do with it if its a members only post.

I always appreciate your advice and suggestions...am just now going to have the time to "get with the program". I've been on the sidelines, reading and thinking, and now will be implementing. Thanks for this post.

Jeesh Brad, thanks a lot !!. I just went over to linkedin and added the BlogLink. It's like adding more Jewish guilt. I now have another channel to worry about looking stale, if I don't stay consistent with my blogging.

Seriously, there are pretty exciting updates, going on over there. I haven't had a chance to check them all out, but I'll go back and take a closer look.

Hi @ActiveBrad - I really am liking LinkedIn more and more, the more I go there the more I appreciate what it has to offer. I've had clients check me out there, and I have some nice recommendations up there for clients to read, too.

I hope their applications remain on a business/professional level, and stay away from all the applications that places like facebook have going on.

Brad- I came across this via Bill Gassett's post and I'm glad LinkedIn is finally adding some applications. I tried to add the blog application, but it was having trouble installing. I look forward to getting it live though.

I'm looking forward to exploring the new apps at LinkedIn. I think they will create a lot more activity between connections, leading to more business opportunities and stronger relationships.

Bill- I probably won't do Inman NY, but if it starts with a REBarCamp, I'm up for that. Perhaps we can get an AR northeast group going, much the way they did with the western contingent, at the Houston REBar. Brad, what say the AR guys?

Matt - it may just be that there are so many hitting those areas of the site right now. You know how these things go, look what happens here at AR when we announce something new and we only have 115,000 or so, LinkedIn claims to have over 30,000,000. Sure glad I'm not a community builder over there! LOL~ :-)

Brad- Good point, I betcha there are some people going cross-eyed over this! I wonder how many emails 30million users can generate!

John - I totally agree with you, time will tell for sure. I like it already, getting hits here on this post from the new BlogLink feature. Plus I tweeted about it, I guess that's cheating. Oh yea, and I wrote on the GeekEstateBlog about it. haha I Put the word out about it today, that's for sure. :-)

Michelle -same here, I did keep it updated with employment info and history, and accepted a few and gave a few recommendations, but other than that, I didn't spend much time there.

OK Marilyn - Maybe Rich or I or both of us can make it if there's an REBarCamp too. I have to be in NC in Jan or Feb, but I have to lock down those dates and confirm, then I can let you know. What would the tentative dates for an REBarCamp look like in NY? When exactly is Inman? If you're serious, let me know and I'll get the ball rolling for you. We just had a conf. call yesterday for the REBarCamp coming up in LA in Feb. 09. Let me know. :-)

i am still working my way thru Linkedin and have set it up to show my blog posts. There is still a lot that can be added to it. Thanks for the update and the reminder to go back to work on it.

I believe this to be feature worthy :) Technology is moving so fast and so many changes are being made every day that it's hard to keep up but keep up we must and thanks to Brad, we now know what we have to do on linkedin! Keep up the good work Brad you are our eyes and ears.

Brad - The Inman dates are Jan 7-9. I know I read somewhere that the possibility of a REBar Camp, prior to the opening, was being considered, but I can't locate where I read that.

This is great info... I'm new to creating cyber presence and am really excited about all these wonderful tools at our fingertips. Although it is overwhelming to learn it all so quickly, this post is helpful and clear. Appreciate it!

Thanks yet again for the info. The key to my success on getting the blog link working (I read it was taking someone else's page a long time to load) was this tidbit from Bill Gassett's post.

You will need to have one of your links in your profile be your blog URL for this to work.

Could you create a post summarizing how to choose the best social networking sites? I am having a harder, and harder time knowing how to budget my time. I want the most bang for my buck but am having trouble with the time budget.

Brad, this is a very informative post. I was just speaking with someone yesterday about more ways to use LinkedIn as a marketing tool. The information you provided in this post will keep me busy for a while.

Marjorie - now you can syndicate your Blog posts there. That's a new feature you might find useful to go along with your profile on LinkedIn.

Dana - awesome. Being LinkedIn is just one more way to have your information out there for your clients and future clients to find. They are constantly adding and growing the network everyday. I have some great business associates on LinkedIn, and that's the only place we communicate now. I can't get them over to facebook or twitter, how funny is that? :-)

Like many of the others commenting, I have been on Linkedin for a few months, but basically only have my profile on there. I am glad to hear that you can add your blog posts, now it's just a matter of me figuring out how.
