Twitter for real estate is being talked about a lot right now at Real Estate Webmasters, Active Rain, most every real estate community on the internet.  More and more real estate agents are starting to use twitter both for networking with each other and building friendships in their local communities.

I have been one of the people commenting on active rain blog posts for the past year thinking that twitter was a pretty cool application but just did not "get" it.  At about the same time I first tried twitter I also started a facebook account.  Facebook, while still a bit foreign, people playing little games, throwing things at each other, etc. made more sense and I found that over time I have made connections with people from my past.  Over this past year more and more of my classmates have joined and it is a nice way of getting back in touch.  What I found though that at least for me I have mainly friended people I knew in real life or people I knew virtually but would consider friends. Most facebook users keep their profiles protected and while my friends may also have friends that I might have a lot in common with I often don't know enough about that person to make the next step to friend them and get to know them.

For the most part, twitter users do not password protect their feeds so it is much easier to find people who have common interests.  When an interesting conversation pops up you can click on the @username to see the original comment and if you like what you read can follow that person instantly.

How does this relate to real estate?  A friend of mine, Knox who is not a REALTOR sums up one of the best reasons real estate agents should be using twitter, Twitter makes Communities Tighter.  This could be a community of real estate agents or people from the same area.  If you learn how to use search.twitter.com you can find people who are interested in just about anything you can think of and you can likely find people in your town and can immediately to build community.

Starting to see the benefits but still can't figure out how to get past the empty box and the question, "What are you doing?" I recently wrote a handy post on Twitter for Real Estate - How to get started.

Even though I signed up well over a year ago, I've only been active on Twitter for a few weeks.  It is too early to tell how much community building I can make with people who live in my area, but I do know that the community and sharing of information with other agents that I have met has made this well worth the effort.

Carolyn, I too have signed up for twitter and find it hard to get started, harder than Active Rain, this network is in my comfort zone. I'll keep at it and hope to strike up some new friendships. thanks for the post.

Carolyn, interesting insight on Twitter.  I am also considering joining this community, but have next to no knowledge of it.  Sounds like it's worth the while.  Thanks for sharing!

Carolyn - this is great - I am on Twitter, too, and see its possibilities, but haven't quite used it as I should yet:)  My user name BTW is CourtneyCooper :)  Original, huh?

Its like wildfire...get all on board.  Good post. See you inside!

Steve it takes a while for the possibilities to sink in.  Read the other blog on how to get started and see if it makes more sense to you.

Jennifer there are lots of posts here on active rain that can help you get started.

Courtney just keep working at it it will come.

Andrew  I know what you mean.  Once you get started it's hard to stop.

Hi Carolyn - My Twitter ID is LVRealEstate. I started using Twitter last year during NAR, and have made some great connections both locally and around the country that I probably wouldn't have found through Facebook or ActiveRain. It's a great little platform!

I have heard a lot about twitter and facebook.  I joined facebook just a couple of weeks ago, but have yet to join twitter.  I have read several posts about how people are using twitter, but am having a hard time grasping the concept.  Perhaps if I just join, it will come to me in time.

4:47pm • #11

Charles I'll be sure to look for you over at twitter.

Troy give it a little time.  Facebook is easier to grasp at first. When you do get over to twitter make sure you start following some people right away because when you see how the conversations flow it will make more sense.

I have just started using the service but from what I can tell it is like anything here, you put the time in instead of simply just registering and the benefits shall come.

Hi Carolyn, thank you for the good review of Twitter.  You convinced me that I need to spend more time learning the Twitter system.  I signed up for the Tweetbeep service, but I do get a bunch of advertising, and I'm not sure how to stop it.

I think the secret to Twitter is simple.  Don't be a salesman there.  Just be yourself.  Laugh, joke, talk, share stories, ask questions.  I was introduced to Twitter awhile back and have made some really good friends in the real estate community as well as some locals in my area.  I have not ever pushed real estate, but have talked about it when I've gotten to know people.  Its not a spam device and doing nothing but advertising will only get you blocked or unfollowed by people.  I know several agents who have wound up with business thanks to Twitter, but its because they didn't work a "system," they just were themselves.

A great place to learn more is TwiTip by Darren Rowse.

I'm @rerockstar don't be afraid to say hello.

Hi Nancy. I'll look for you to follow. I think you could do a lot with your healthy home program on Twitter. We should meet up sometime, I might have some ideas.

Matt, hi I just sent you a tweet. We have been following each other for a while but haven't engaged yet. It gets difficult to focus on too many multiple conversations, at least for me. I'm the one typing things into twitter and then checking to see if they are indexed. Yeah I'm that annoying but I'm having fun.

Hi Carolyn,

I am a newbie to FB and AR and LI!  I had not done any of this until a few weeks ago when I went to a Tech Seminar and boy were my eyes opened to great big world of people out there!  I am ticking right along reading as much as I can on AR and kept coming up on this Twitter word and had no idea what Twitter was.  So I did a blog search and your blog was the first one that looked to be the most informative!  Thank you so much for helping me out.  I probably will concentrate a while on these 3 beginnings before I venture over there but when I do I will look for you there too!

Debbie

Hi Carolyn - I signed up for Twitter a few months ago but have been at a loss as to how to use it.  Thanks for the tips.

Have you heard of "ping.fm"? Cool site that allows you to post updates in one location for many of your update sites. I can go to Ping and enter an update of "what I'm doing" and have it automatically post to Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and any other of the two dozen or so and growing list of social networking sites. Check it out!

Carolyn:

Thanks for taking the time to write about Twitter.  Like some others, I joined but have not seen the value of it.  Ater reading your post, I will give it another try.

Hmmm. Facebook and Twitter, my weaknesses. I just don't have time for it all. Some say I already spend too much time at the keyboard.

9:55am • #24

Hi Margaret and Jan, just keep playing with Twitter, I think it's one of those 'ah-ha" moments.

Thomas, haven't set up ping.fm. I had twitter updating facebook for a while but I turned it off because I felt it was too many updates. ping.fm does seem to work well for certain people.

Vickie I'll look for you in the twitter world.

Carolyn - of all the social networks out there, the United States Army has identified Twitter as a potential terrorist tool. That keeps me away.

Simon, I can see why the Army might have some problems with twitter, but I think it is ok for us real estate folks.

Carolyn....Twitter is not a big thing here in ATL.....yet! So I figure by the time it filters down to the Southeast, I will be a professional! I don't get "tweets" on my phone, so it really only works for me when I'm in my office (like now)

I see it's potential and I'm hoping I'm on the front of the train to get something from it!

I'm in the same boat as Thom and Ray.  The majority of people in my area have no idea what Twitter is all about.  By the time they find out I'll be huge in my area.
