Isn't weather the easiest thing to talk about?

I woke up to snow today.

Yep, November 3rd, and there is snow on the ground today, has been spitting snow out of the sky all day.  **sigh**  In a town where it has snowed on the 4th of July, I shouldn't be surprised by the unseasonably early snow.  The joys of being at 4,100 feet and the quirks that come with it.

What does the weather have to do with Real Estate?  Not much, but it sure gives strangers something to talk about.  At the vet's office today for instance, on a routine visit for vaccines, I met a lovely lady who was just passing through town in the RV when she wanted to get her dog checked out by the Doc.  She leaned over, pointed out the window to the big fat Christmas Eve flakes flying outside and asked, "Isn't it a bit early for this?"

This sprouted into an opportunity to chat up Klamath Falls, the surrounding area and my inevitable comment of "If you don't like the weather, just wait awhile, it'll change."  That comment met with a scowl of disbelief, and I reassured her that this was typically a true statement, we rarely experience long gray periods in Klamath Falls.   I talked about the 300 days of sunshine a year, hot summer days with low humidity and cool nights.  Four seasons, but no real weather extremes.  We chatted about the elections, the price of gas, and when she found out about my job, of course we discussed the local housing market.   She then added that the purpose of their RV trip was to find a spot to retire, hoped to have it narrowed down soon and hadn't even considered Klamath Falls until a sickly dog afforded them an opportunity to stop here.

She got called back to see the Doc, so I said my goodbyes while I handed her my card.  I was still in the lobby after she got something for the dog's upset tummy and paid her bill.  I took the opportunity to point out the window to the gleaming sunshine and said, "See?  Just wait awhile!"

She winked, shook my hand and said I might here from her soon.

It just takes a few minutes to talk up your area, present yourself as a good steward of your community and maybe, just maybe, get that unexpected call.  I try not too preoccupied with electronic forms of communication to miss those opportunities to make a personal contact.
