A Historic Moment for America as We Elect Our First African American President

Regardless of how you feel about politics you have to admit that this election was going to change history.  I always hoped that our country would be able to see beyond the racial divide and elect a candidate based on who they felt would be the best man or woman for the job and not based on race or gender.  Barack Obama

But never did I think this day would come in my lifetime, until last night when Barack Obama was elected as our 44th President of the United States of America.

And I was so moved by Obama’s speech as he reached out to all Americans about working together to make things better in our country.  And how he tied everything together by ending with the story about Ann Nixon Cooper, a 106 year-old African American woman who has seen so much change in her lifetime and who cast her vote today at the polls.  To be alive to see this day, that’s historic.

We’ve gone through so many growing pains in this country and there have been many historic moments in our history:

1)    The American Revolution
2)    The Civil War – and the abolishment of slavery
3)    Women gain the right to own property
4)    Women gain the right to vote
5)    Desegregation – Martin Luther King’s memorable speech – “I Have a Dream”
6)    We were the first to land on the moon
7)    The Anti-War Movement in the 60’s

Just to mention a few.

I’ve read so many of these historic moments in my history books back in grade, middle and high school.  I’ve listened to the recording of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, which has always moved me to tears.

I’ve heard the stories from my parents about the incredible creativity that poured out during the Vietnam Anti-War movement and how many felt more alive than ever.

So to be living through such a historic moment, there are no words to express how I feel right here, right now, but to say that it’s an honor to be an American and to be witness to a historic moment such as this…as Americans elect our very first African American to be the 44th President of the United States of America.  Martin Luther King would be proud.  And as Barack Obama has said many times before:

Yes We Can.

I hope Obama will be an American President. I would also hope that Rudi would have been an American President, not an Italian American President.

I'm confident that the racial gap Obama addressed in one of his speeches stands for the fact that he is an American President.

People seem to forget that his mother was white. He's America's President, not just an African-American President.  Race should never be at issue.

While being glued to the television last night and seeing the election going in Obama's favor I sat and said to my husband, " Do you realize our grandchildren will read about this in school " much like we read about the Civil War.

I will have to admit I was much on the fence with this campaign. It was almost an eenie meenie minie mo sort of casted ballot. Whomever to win I stood as " We need change". No doubt much of America felt the same and voted for what they thought would be the best man for the job.

For many it is a sad, disappointing time with the loss of McCain, I feel and would have felt sorry for anyone who had lost including Obama, just my nature. Right now more than ever whether we agree or disagree we need to stand idol and watch "the change" unfold and I believe it will and offer our support.

Jessica, This Harvard Educated President elect will do a fine job, and color will have nothing to do with it. I have been a life long Republican, but I'm ready for change..yes he could, is true. Kudos to the Democrats now lets get moving ahead. The new phrase now that it's over may have to be "It's All Good".

As long as this is seen as being historic because of Obama's race, nothing has really changed.  The historic moment will be when no one really cares whether someone's black or white.  If 46% of the black vote had voted for McCain, then I would say that this is the day when race didn't matter and it's something to celebrate.

Beautiful times and something to really celebrate - its History! Lets not try to delute that fact.  Linda, yes his mother was white but just like all other mixed children in this world he is considered to be a black man.  I believe that once American embrace that fact and move on to fully supporting him - not just because of his race... then we can move on.  He is a black man, that should not need to be changed, nor can it be changed.

Like Obama said it is not about him, its about the voters, the supporters and the United States of America.  I know we will find that its OK to be a black leader.  My 2 cents.

Robert - Thanks!

Yvette - me neither.  It's kind of cool!

Andrea - I agree 100%.  I hope one day every single person in this nation sees beyond racial lines.  Electing Obama is a great start.

Linda - I completely agree.  He is an American president.  The celebration is that the people of America elected him to be our next president not because he was black, but because they felt he would be the best man for the job this time around.

Melissa - yeah, I think it's an incredible moment in history that I will never forget.   Sometimes I wish I was standing there listening to Dr. King speak or being part of the women's suffrage movement or the labor movement (although I hope we never have to go through what many of our grandparents and great grandparents experienced during the Great Depression), but it's great to see our nation move forward.

Steve - I like - "It's all good".  We're going to face a lot of challenges and nothings going to be perfect, but I hope we all come together as a people now and work together to help each other despite our differences in opinion.

Mary - I couldn't have said it any better.

Tim - I agree with you to degree. Even thought the people elected a president who happens to have an African American blood line, many voted for him because they felt he was the best man for the job, not because he was black.  So I think we are moving in that direction and that makes this historic.

Rosemary - Well Said!  And amen to that.
