Obama - Tell us! Is America ready for a black president?

Obama

President-elect Barack Obama will face some of the most daunting challenges that any new president has confronted since at least 1981, when America tumbled into a severe recession with its prestige ebbing around the world.

He faces the immediate task of leading a nation that's reeling from its most serious economic downturn in a generation, one whose government is saddled with a federal deficit that's heading for $1 trillion this year.

He'll take the reins of a country with more than 183,000 of its sons and daughters fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan , conflicts that won't end simply because a new president wants to end them.

He also inherits a global war on terrorism against shadowy enemies who remain intent on doing America harm, not to mention hostile foreign capitals from Tehran to Moscow .

Can he do it? You tell me.

Speak your mind...

Tell us! - Is America ready for a black president?

It looks like America is ready since we voted him in. Now we will see what impact he will have and deliver as promised.

Lawrence,

USA may not be ready...but, it's too late to change and we will soon learn!

A daunting task for anyone.

I don't just a president, or a person, by the color of their skin.  I judge a person by the color of their soul, as should everyone.

He is not a "black" president, he is mine, he is our president and he will lead this nation into a phase of change like its been waiting for a century.

The challenges for our new President and for our country are substantial. The President will need all of our help to solve the problems we face. I, for one, am ready to do whatever it takes!

The colour of his skin has no bearing whatsoever on his capabilities as our president! His character and drive are what will determine his success or failure as a human being and an American. No matter who ended up in that seat, it's going to be a tough row to hoe.

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation under God, indivisible, With Liberty and Justice for all."

This is a very proud moment for all Americans because those words ring more true than ever before!

.......one Nation under God, indivisible, With Liberty and Justice for all!

I also have a new respect for those who didn't vote for our President but will stand behind him--it's a Brave New World.  God Bless America and God bless the President.

To answer your question:  You betcha!

Yes we are. Same way we were ready for every other president. I'm quite happy that we have a process that lets us decide who we feel will best represent this great nation... now, hopefully we can throw away considerations that seemed to be automatic disqualifiers in the past- such as race, gender, age or religious affiliation. We had candidates that didn't fit the normal bill this go 'round... and I think that says a lot about us.

I know why he was considered black during the campaign. But why is he considered black now? After all he had a white mother. He was raised in a white household. So couldn't he just as easily be considered white?

Cherimie -  I agree with you 100% thanks for your comment.

Mike - Your right, now it's time to deliver.

Sheila - A very daunting task, he will be under the microscope.  So far he seems to handle that very well.  Only time will tell.

Melissa - Hopefully he can.  Again, only time wil tell.

Nicholas -  Nice comment, you sound like you might be ready for to run yourself.  :-)

James - I would have to agree, he should no longer be looked at as a "black" president.  The president should be color blind.  Time to move forward and pull this great country our of the mess its in.

John - I like yourself am ready to do whatever it takes as well.  Great comment.  Thank you.

Megan - Yes, it will be tough indeed.  We can only hope and pray that he is up to the task ast had.  Deep down I feel that he will be.

Aida - I think the statement "one Nation under God, indivisible, With Liberty and Justice for all!" says it all.  Thank you.

Mathew -  I guess your right, we did elect him.

Pat -  Your right, simply being "President" puts him under a microscope.  Every single move he does or thing he says will be watched as with any president we have had in the past.

Chuck -  Well said.  It des say allot about us and makes me Prouder to be an American.

Greg -  You have a point, but its all in perception.  When you look at my picture here, what do you see?  I mean from a racial perspective.  You probably said a black man right?  Now unless I had told you you would never have known that my Natural Born Grandmother was Japanese, Grandfather Black West Indian, on maternal side, Grandfather was Pueto Rican (Hispanic) and Grand Mother was White Irish (and she was always proud of that).  So what does that make me?  Bottom line, it should not matter.  But perception, what we can see does to a point.  We as a human race have to be a ble to for whatever rason be able to put everyting in a catagory of some sort.  Thanks so much for your comment.

Thank you Everyone!

Hi Lawrence,

When I look at you I see a professional. I learned long ago not to judge someone by their skin color. Thank you for the thread.

I was relieved to see that we do indeed seem ready for a black president.  I was pleased to see it but depending on where you are in the country - responses may vary.  I know what I'm ready for - someone to lead us.  Obama is someone that I find inspiring and we are in desparate need of a little leadership, hope, and inspiration.

Of course.  And America was ready for a Roman Catholic when the electorate picked John Kennedy.  Now I'd like to see a Jew and a woman run...or a Jewish woman for that matter.

I've been sick and tired of these stupid race/religion issues since the 5th grade.  That's when I figured out on my own that it was idiocy.
