It doesn't matter who you voted for, it's important that you voted, therefore; anyone who voted yesterday for either candidate to me and many others is an AMERICAN HERO!!!  When you think of how so many people from various parts of the country, for one day, came together to vote for the next president and who came from various races, cultures, sexual preferences, ages, demographics, economic status and education levels.  It's phenomenal that so many people 64% turnout rate of the American public came to vote, by standing on long lines for hours, some had to wait in the rain to vote their candidates in.  8 Million more people voted this year compared to 2004WOW! WOW!  WOW!

These are REAL AMERICANS WHO LOVE THEIR COUNTRY.... I'm extremely PROUD of every American who took the time to VOTE.  Please give youself a GIANT PAT on your back, because you understood the meaning of DEMOCRACY and took it to the next level.  Too many people had become complacent on voting and feeling that their vote doesn't count.

In the U.S. equivalent, here in Canada; the public votes for the local MP (U.S. equivalent of House of Reps) and the party with the most MPs select their party leader, who becomes the Prime Minister of Canada (U.S. President equivalent).  Here, Canadians don't have a direct vote for their Prime Minister, they just select their party members.  This  frustrates most Canadian voters, because they have no power on who is selected for their Prime Minister.  In contrast, only 59.1% of eligible Canadians voted, which was 3% lower than last time.

So the next time you have a problem with the Electoral College in the U.S., remember that some countries, even modern countries, can't choose their country's Head of Office.

THANK YOU FOR VOTING AND TAKING YOUR VOTING RIGHTS SERIOUSLY....

It was awesome to see the voter turnout..although I don't know if I would call people 'heroes' for exercising the vote to right that so many people fought so hard for...........and so many nations still don't have....I understand your sentiment though! :-))

I have no problem with the electoral college.  Without this nine states have over 50% of the population.  They would never bother with the small states.

Hi Liz,

Just remember, a few Americans have never used their right to vote, so I'm extremely proud that most Amercans DID VOTE and didn't take it for granted.

Hi John,

I agree, it's good when all the states contribute, including large, medium and small states.

thank you Ann-Marie. Millions of americans (and canadians?) stood in line, stood up for their candidate yesterday, inacted their right to vote, elected Barack Obama as their next president of the USA, and reclaimed their chance to change their lives!

Ann Marie- YOu are so right! My 9 year old daughter today heard the wrath of her fellow 4th graders whose families were for McCain who said some pretty horrible things about Obama. Not wanting to hurt anyone's feelings, she simply said;

"At least your parents were able to vote. Many people in many countries are not able to vote at all! Your parents should feel lucky"

She does her mama so proud:)

I thought putting things in perspective with other country's voting procedure would make Americans understand how really LUCKY they are...

This is staggeringly phenomenal election for so many reasons Ann-Marie - which I believe is why there were record numbers. Can you imagine having the opportunity to vote in such a landmark event in history and missng it??!

Hi Deborah,

We missed the crowds, but we didn't miss on the voting, once an American, you can vote on national & local issues from the last location in the States you lived. Ours was the State of Michigan.  You can call them and they send an "Absentee Ballot" when the military "Absentee Ballots" go out, ours go, since we live in another GREAT country (CANADA).  This also guarantees that it arrives to us early enough so we can send it back and it arrives before the Nov 4th deadline or it doesn't count.  Out of the 4 people in our family, 3 of us voted and it was my 20 year old daughter's first time.  She was extremely excited about her voting privilege.

We were all up til 2:00 a.m. on Election Night, we wanted to make sure that everything went okay and 2002 was repeated.... LOL

Ann-Marie...

I'm not sure that it take courage to vote. I don't see the peril. Voting has never been easier, and requires little more sacrifice that a few hours of time.

Now, it takes courage to RUN, that's for sure. All of the media and public scrutuiy can take its toll.

Hi Patrick,

I think the U.S. people are tried of the "status quo" especially, if the "average" American isn't benefiting from it.  This country was built on change and progress, but sometimes we need a "kick in the rear" to remember that.

Hi Richard,

Here are a couple of quotes that helps me justify the word "courage" and how many people who voted showed it....

Alan Cohen -

It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new.  But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful.  There is more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life, and in change there is power.

Baltasar Gracian -

Without courage, wisdom bears no fruit.

Clare Booth Luce -

Courage is the ladder on which all the other virtues mount.

Dorothy Thompson -

Only when we are no longer afraid do we begin to live.

Hi Caren,

Especially when things get rough, we always need to exercise our rights, or the politicians get too complacent.  It tends to keep them in line....

Hi Stephen,

Very interesting article!!!!!  Basically, why McCain was listening to Joe the Plumber, Obama was listening to Warren Buffet & Paul Volcker..  There was no competition with the strategy Obama used vs. McCain.  He had the "smarts" to get intelligent people around him, because Obama's intelligence told him to "learn more" and you will win!!!  We are finally going to have a SMART President AGAIN.....
