If you didn't it know yet, an old established and well loved roadside attraction has become Florida's newest State Park as of the first November weekend in 2008. 

Weeki  Wachee Springs has reached world famous status a long time ago with its underwater performances of the old Christian Anderson tale of "The Little Mermaid".  The park which was established over 60 years ago and privately run for decades also presents various animal shows and conducts a "river cruise" down the scenic Weeki Wachee river with its cold, clear waters originating from a spring that is so deep, it's bottom has never been discovered.  More than 112 gallons of water are coming out of this spring every day at a consistent temperature of 72 degrees Fahrenheit.  It is in this very spring where enchanting "mermaids" are performing the show to the delight of thousands of visitors and residents alike.

During the boat ride, visitors can observe the wildlife in and alongside the river banks.  It's not unusual to see an alligator bask in the sun, or see manatees graze the bottom of the river with schools of fish swimming by and birds fluttering through the trees.

It is not unusual to see turtles and fish "participate" in the mermaid shows.

 "Buccaneer Bay" is the adjacent waterpark that provides fun and refreshment during hot summer days for young and old alike.  Snack bars and a souvenir shop complete the parks' offerings.

Special events such as the "Taste of Jazz" Festival and the Newscomer Reception hosted by the Greater Hernando Chamber of Commerce are taking place throughout the year.
