There are agents thriving in 2008, while many others are dropping out of the game. What is the secret of those who are getting the business? The secret is that there is no secret, no magic bullet, no one strategy that will give you an edge. You cannot blame the market, your bad luck, or your dog. The naked truth is that you must have a plan, because a failure to plan is a plan to fail.
You wouldn't take a road trip without knowing your destination and taking a map, would you? That's all business planning is - visualizing where you want to be, and how you will get there. Simple.
Here's something that might help you - since we all have 20/20 hindsight and we're all experts on what we should've done, try this: Pretend you are back in December 2007, and you have a crystal ball that is showing you what is going to happen in 2008. What would you have done differently? How would you have adjusted your budget? Your activities? What worked well, and what didn't? What could you have eliminated?
Now, shift your thinking back to now - what did this "what if" exercise show you? What can you do differently, right now? Where do you want to be at the end of 2009? Are you ready for anything?
A question to ask yourself is this: Are you truly in the game, or are you an observer? Are you creating your life, or are you letting your life happen to you? Are you a victim or a victor? If your life and your business is not what you want it to be, stop complaining about what is in the past and DO SOMETHING NOW. Get a plan, write it all out - remember, it's not a goal if you don't write it down. Include your personal goals - how you feel at work affects your personal life, and what's going on in your personal life affects your work. It's all connected. And finally, don't forget the action steps.
You are a valuable asset to your company, and your company can be a valuable asset to your business if you use the tools available to you. We can do this together - form a Mastermind Group - that's how we get from good to great. We are in this game together, and its not by chance. We each have strengths to contribute to the team, things we can learn from one another, ways in which we may complement and support each other. We are all achievers - that's why we're in sales - and together, everyone achieves more.
