I just thought I'd let people know ahead of time of a change that will be going into effect early this week, so we don't get hundreds of support emails saying something is broken.  We are going to try targeting the featured profiles displayed on the front page to the state the person viewing the page is in.  That means instead of always showing the top 2 people on the network, we will instead show the top 2 people in a particular state.  What state is used will be based off the IP address of the person viewing the page, in much the same way that Google and many other sites targets ads to particular regions.

Hopefully this will make a lot of people happy, because now instead of 2 people making it onto the front page, 100 will.  While we don't specifically target consumers with this site yet, it looks like we usually get over a thousand a day coming in off search engines.  So this may help more of our members get there face in front of their regionally targetted audience.

Note: Change not live yet...

Another super cool upgrade.

But I wonder this?  When I am working from our office in Birmingham, Michigan, we use servers in Plano Texas.  I can't explain how that works, but I know you guys know what I am talking about.  So will I be seeing agents in Texas when I log onto the network from the office?

That is sometimes an issue with geo targetting by IP address.  We'll start off with a list we acquired and make it more accurate over time by using data from our members.

That way when we do start helping our members to get in front of more consumers we'll have good data to work with.

This new geo-targeting feature makes perfect sense.  No doubt it'll please the 98 people not currently showing up on the homepage!  :-)

Great change! Have you figured out how to not have all the AOL people show up in Virginia?  That really messes with the stats on my web site.

Matt,  that's a great idea and certainly consumer friendly.  You guys must stay up nights thinking of new and better ways to get ActiveRain (us) our there.
