In the current issue of PC World they give a section on 100 useful web sites.  I found some of these to be really interesting.  I am slowly visiting them and I am forwarding my favorites on.

This is going to be a series and the first are websites about Learning Stuff. I am only forwarding the FREE sites so none of these cost.

http://answers.yahoo.com/ I use Yahoo as my home page and have visited this site before.  You can ask questions and then get answers back.  I believe my question was "I think my cat has eaten rat poisoning; what do I do?"  This was quite a few months ago and I didn't wait for the answer but went immediately to the vet.  As it turned out he had not eaten rat poisoning but was sick from an infected flea bit.  It is a cool way to ask questions and get answers though.   Other visitors rate the answer on usefulness.

http://www.howstuffworks.com/ This site is all about learning how stuff works.  You can learn about the history of NASCAR or find out about vulture vomit.  We have vultures that hang out at our Yacht Club and now hearing about that I will make sure not to scare any.  Is a cyber war coming; this is the place to check it out.

http://www.instructables.com/ This is the site for the do it yourselfer.  Find out how to make things yourself.  You can find out how to make an ice pack vest for your horse or how to of braid your horse's tail.  There's instruction on art, crafts, food, games, etc. etc. etc.  If you are thinking green you can go and learn how to make your own LED light bulbs.

http://www.fixya.com/  This is a site for technical support, manuals and troubleshooting for consumers.  Now this is a REALLY cool site.  Say you are having problems with a lap top or a digital camera you can go and ask one of their top experts.  At the moment I have everything running but there have been a number of times where I have needed technical help with my gadgets.  With this site you can either post a message on the site or have a live chat with one of the experts.

http://www.livemocha.com/ This is a free new approach to learning languages.  You can connect with native speakers around the world.  This gives you the opportunity to learn, practice, share and connect.  If you are planning that trip to Italy here's the place to start learning the language and the best part it is FREE.

http://www.about.com/ This one was not on PC's list but I added it as it is where I go to find out about just about anything.  You can go here to solve a problem, get something done or make a decision.  You can browse their channels or explore topics.

http://dictionary.reference.com/ and http://thesaurus.reference.com/ I have to admit these were already on my favorites as my spelling is not what it used to be.  I often use the thesaurus to come up with a different name for the same word.

http://www.anywho.com/ You can find anyone here as this is your white and yellow pages on line.  Thanks Fred Doleac for sharing anywho.

If you have some other website that fit in to the "learning stuff" category please let me know and I will add them to my list.

Marchel, this is a great list.  Some I had heard of, but not the 'fixya' and 'howstuffworks'.  I'll have to put them to the test and see what I get back.  I love finding out about new sites (or in this case, existing sites that I didnt know about... LOL)   Have a great weekend!

Marchel,

I like the site "How Stuff Works."  There's a program on TV called "How It's Made" that I'm addicted to as well...

Marchel,

Great post of resources....I am interested in the How Stuff Works and the LiveMocha site.  I have noticed that many times it seems that answers.yahoo comes up well in google searches if you type a question in the search bar, which I do.....so this could also be an opportunity to get your name out there associated with knowledge by answering questions.

Also, if I can add, if you have read a book (and Marchel I know from your reviews you read a few) take some time to leave a review on Amazon.com too.....it's another link on Google for you:-)

MARY, I have my yahoo hooked up to only come on when I turn it on as I was told it was causing my computer to run slow.  I just found out about another program where I can have both yahoo and AIM hooked up (also from this same article where I got these).  I will try to get it hooked up tomorrow.  My last week of bible study is this coming week so why don't we start up then if that sounds okay.

JOHN, I was impressed with both of those sites.  I sure in the heck didn't know about those vultures from the how stuff works site.  I will be sure not to scare any, the results is really yucky!  I loved the how to fix things site.  I've always liked crafty things and this shows the how to make things.  I've always been able to make just about anything but I need a set of instructions and this site has them.

MIKE, I often watch "how things work".  I also like Modern Marvels.  My daughter is in to the "dirty jobs" but sometimes that is kind of yucky.

GINGER, I'm glad to hear that on-line surfing is helping with our brain.  I must be giving my brain a lot of help then.  It doesn't seem to be helping with my spelling though.  I used to think of myself as an excellent speller but not so anymore.  I think I have become too dependent on spell check.  Point in case I just misspelled dependent (lol).  Then I misspelled misspelled.

BOB & CAROLIN, I thought they were good resources also.  I have a lot more to go through from this article as I get the time.

LIZ,I lOVE TECHNOLOGY.  It makes it so much easier to figure things out on our own.  I always figure why re-invent the wheel if someone else has already done it.

LIZ, Those are some awesome sites; aren't they.  I'm slowly making it through all the rest of the sites.  They have 100 websites and a good portion of them I was not familair with.

HAWAII HOMES, I'm one of those Google people also.  Sometimes though I get a little too specific for Google and that's where this list fits in.  By the way my daughter is coming through there today.  She is a flight attendant for an International company and is on her way back from Australia.  I will be glad when she lands there as she will be able to call me locally.  It is rare for her to be someplace where she can make a local call.
