Sometimes a change in my environment doesn't quite sink in for awhile. A previous post, 'Goose Poop Park' - The Geese - or the Park?   dealt with the issue of Canada Geese 'messing' up Waterfront Park in upscale downtown Kelowna.

The following spring on my usual walks through the Brandt's Creek reserve area and the waterfront, I noticed FAR FEWER babies. Catching my attention, it puzzled me. It was later that someone told me about the 'authorities' - the city, I suppose would make the decision, to disrupt the nests.

Aerial view of Kelowna downtown and Waterfront Park. Adjacent to the north, which would be at the bottom of the photo, is Brandt's Creek, wildlife reserve and bird sanctuary.

This whole area actually is the natural habitat of waterfowl and other water creatures.

The resultant disappointment was the fact of not only fewer babies this year, but also almost NO Canada Geese at all. Nest disturbance effective indeed.

The tragic irony is the fact of the reserve, supposedly in place to protect wildlife, and fought for by locals wanting to preserve these natural habitats, which doesn't seem to have as much value as high density revenue.

Well these majestic creatures have more sense than to hang around places where their precious eggs will be destroyed.

You tell me who is the more intelligent here??!

That is so sad!  Look at those beautiful babies.  I get so sick of people sometimes!  : (

Deborah, I love these beautiful animals....I'm sad to hear that's happening in your area.  I wonder if that's protected area--or if they want to build?  The buildings took much of our beauty away.

That is awful. If it was fought over to protect natural habitat then what in the world happened? Did the resident who believed in preservation in the first place get clubbed. I hope there is outrage in your area over this. I know these geese can be messy, we have them in the south too, but destroying the eggs...come on! This may not only upset the population, but the migratory and nesting habits too. While I am a big fan of architecture and progress, it can be done in a smart and environmentally friendly manner. I'm with Chris and Carole on this.

I hear that Chris - me too. I have sadly witnessed terrible assaults on the Canada Geese, in addition to the nest disturbance, bu STUPID humans.

Carole - Brandt's Creek wildlife santuary is located directly adjacent to the bottom of the photo, but not seen in this photo of developed area. The  reserve is established, in which they have destroyed eggs.

Hi Rich - it is awful. This seemed to have been decided and carried out without much notoriety. It appears real estate wields the power, along with city revenue.

Are you aware of other methods?

Deborah - Man continues to interfere with nature every day as the boundaries of "civilization" continue to push into the once lush wilderness. But nature has a way of coming back living in a rural area we have noticed a big increase in animal and bird life around our area.

Hey Kathy - there is only so far we can keep pushing the boundaries of nature - we may reach a time when the earth and its creatures may not recover.

The earth is resilient to a point - great that you are seeing recovery!!
