Great blogging - Thanks Richard Weisser

I haven't officially met Richard Weisser of Coweta Fayette Real Estate -but I've read his blogging for some time now. One of the best things about his Red-Bellied Woodpecker - Maleblogs are his photographs,

Red-Bellied Woodpecker - FeMale

from
what I can tell he takes all himself. I catch myself reading his blogs because initially I just want to see the latest pictures posted! They are really great pics.

That's the sign of some really great blogging and a great way to get subscribers to your blog. I suppose a funny (truly funny) daily joke might get me there just as well. Of course once people have found their way to your blog, you have to bring the topic and writing relevance to keep them there.

Hairy Woodpecker

So in celebration of Richard and his indirect teachings on blogging, as well as the beautiful fall leaves dropping, bringing the wildlife more into view, this week I am going to blog on pictures I have personally taken of birds in my back yard. I thought my brother was a weirdo taking pics of birds, until I moved a year and a half ago and got the bug myself.

These are various woodpeckers.  I've seen a downy, hairy, red-bellied, and a northern flicker, which is possibly my favorite. There are a few more around here I've yet to photograph.

As you start to watch you can begin to recognize male and female, and even juevenile, which sometimes look nothing like their adult buddies. I guess its time to get the tripod out and a fresh, clean SD card ... by the way, all of these photos were edited and cropped at Picnik, a really great picture editing site.  I didn't change any coloring, just cropped, added border and my name.  Northern Flicker

Thanks for the great photos. So far, most of my photos are purchased, but I will have to make an effort to come up with some of my own... Does make the post more interesting...

Hi Steve, great pictures.  Just curious, what camera do you use?  BTW I also like Richard's posts!

I have a Canon PowerShot S2 IS.  I only know that b/c it is sitting here.  It is 5MP and 12x optical zoom, 48 digital.  Birds were about 60-80 feet away I'm estimating. I paid $500 for this camera years ago, and have seen it below $300 now.  (If it is even still made!)

Steve, These pictures are beautiful! Since I moved, I really enjoy the hummingbirds. (sorry no great pictures to share, they move very quickly. I'll have to dig some pictures up.) No trees at this house, but we do have some incredible hawks, owls and hummingbirds and yellow finches. Now I'm on the lake. Herons come too.

Janet - I've yet to get a picture of the owls - VERY hard for my amateur skills.  That's one of my misc. goals :-)

Hey Steve, I love to see the pictures in blogs also.  Especially when the bloggers take their own pictures.  I, like you, are working towards the same thing, filling my blog with my own pictures.  I love your pictures - the birds are beautiful!  Great job!

Great post and pics, though I can't tell which one is which.  Did you know when you input the pic info you can make a title that shows up when you mouse over the picture?  I find those titles are also good for SEO.

Thanks Georgina for the tip. I am sporatic about titles and know I should do better! Thanks for reminding me about SEO ;-)
