Nor' Easter Brings Deluge to the Pascack Valley of Bergen County
On this past Friday, the weather forecast for Northern New Jersey was for torrential rainstorms to begin on Saturday evening and last through Sunday. We Realtors always watch the weather forecast for Sundays, since Sunday is the traditional day for Open Houses for the public. Although weather predictions are not always accurate, the press seemed to be taking this forecast quite seriously. In concert with many other Realtors in the area, I cancelled the ads for my Open Houses on Sunday, with the understanding that I did not wish to be responsible for anyone being on the road in particularly bad weather.
As the day played out, the storm was even worse than predicted. We in River Vale had over 9 inches of rain fall in one day! Although the winds were not as bad as predicted, the amazing amount of water falling in such a brief period of time caused flooding where we had never before experienced it. Areas were closed off by police, and there were even voluntary evacuations in the Pascack Valley because of street flooding. Many homes not in flood areas received some water in their basements, and schools in the area were cancelled on Monday. Driving around on Monday was an adventure, since many streets were closed due to flooding.
Just one day later, schools have reopened, and the streets are now open for traffic. The waters are definitely receding, and those basements which were hit by water are drying out. April 15, 2007 will be a day definitely remembered in the record books.
Predictions are that Spring may actually arrive by the end of this week, and not a moment too soon. We in the Pascack Valley have been shell shocked by a few months of below average temperatures, only to be followed by a torrential rain storm. The beauty of a cherry blossom tree in bloom, of buds opening and coming to life, of the grass turning that beautiful rich shade of green, will be a signal that Spring has arrived in the Pascack Valley of Bergen County. When this occurs, we will see the Real Estate Market in the Pascack Valley begin to bloom as well.
