I was talking about Real Estate with a gentlemen the other day and he asked what else I did for a living and was shocked when I told him I work, live, breathe, love real estate and that's all I do for a living. I'm guessing the other agents he knows have other jobs.

I told him that Dave and I have committed to 8 hrs of training a week of real estate education.  We know that top performing Doctors must have 8 hours of education a week also to keep them sharp.   Then, he asked me to "diagnose" his problem like a doctor.

Then he began his real estate story, and let me tell you the story was long, with many twists and turns along the way.  I listened and listened.  Sometimes saying "uh huh" and "ohh" like a doctor would when evaluating the symptoms.

Then,  I pulled the most recent stats out of my purse and was able to consult with him, the number of homes that have sold, the average sold prices in Anne Arundel County, and was able to show him that prices have actually increased by 2% from October 2006 to October 2008 in his price range. I also shared various important information he needed to make an informed choice on his options.

He was so thankful to now have met Agents that actually know real estate that he asked if he could send his friends, co-workers and family to us for real estate consulting.  (Which we said, yes, we are accepting new patients at this time.)

Morale of the story...  When you know your business you are valid.  No one asks a Doctor what else do they do for a living, and after today, we have added a potential client whose sphere of influence won't be asking us, because they will already know we are valid!

Good points. However, I do know quite a few real estate agents who are working second jobs out of necessity. They are quite knowledgeable about their businesses and farming areas, but here and Las Vegas seem to lead the nation in problematic real estate markets. You do what you have to do to make ends meet. Since there are 24 hours in a day, one could work two 8-hour jobs and still get one's sleep in.

Oh yes, absolutely.  This market in some areas is really an anomally.  If you have to get another job you have to.  I was referring mainly to people who become Realtors more as a hobby or a part-time job.  There are many agents who are now leaving the business because they were not taking it seriously and were more in it for a "quick buck" which is not what being a Realtor is about.

I share the same enthusiasm as you do, in my market it is hard to find an agent who does this full time because of the marketing trend. I am full time and work hard at my craft. I look at this type of market as a blessing, so many others have gone out to get a second job and that leaves a lot of business out there to be gotten. Sellers are expecting the market to have dropped so there is no surprise when you hit them with reality.

Yes, I think the full-time agents that can stick it out will be rewarded for their tenacity.  In the long run, full time practitioners that are devoted to real estate as a career will help with the perception of the business.  With all of the pitfalls that are possible in a real estate transaction, they really should be done by professionals.  The job of a Reator is a professional position, not a hobby.
