Bottles of hot sauceTastes change over time. When I was a young man, food was relatively bland. The average meal was meat and potatoes and perhaps pasta with a tomato sauce. If you wanted to purchase a spicy condiment, you might have been able to find a bottle of Tabasco sauce in some stores, but that was probably your only choice.

But times have changed, and we demand more zest and flavor from our food. And it's not as simple as adding a few dashes of hot sauce, because there are hundreds of brands from which to choose. We are not only adding spice to the food, but we're also seeking a particular nuance of both pepper and heat to enhance the flavor. Our tastes have changed.

At some point, we come to the realization that what used to be exotic is now the norm. We demand more from pizzazz from our meals today than we did in the past.

We also expect more from our homes, our cars, and our technologies. What might have sufficed just ten years ago is now woefully inadequate for our 21st century demands. Our televisions have gotten bigger and bigger while our stereos have gotten smaller and smaller.

I can actually remember when wall-to-wall carpet was invented, and homeowners could hardly wait to get their hardwood floors covered up with jute-backed polyester. And then every wall was covered with a different textured wallpaper, grass-cloth, or mirrors! And that was state of the art decorating at the time.

So before your purchase a new home, car, TV or bottle of hot sauce always remember: Tastes change over time.

The older I get the more experiemental and adventursome I have become in regard to spices.  I thought it was age but you are probably right about it being the environment.  When my mother comes for dinner she is always surprised at what I am serving.  She usually loves it.  At her house she is still serving up fried chicken with potatoes and gravy...

El Yucatan Habanero sauce is really good on fried chicken!  It can be purchased at WalMart, of course.  But my favorite is Striracha Hot Chili Sauce.  It is made in CA but served in Vietnamese restaurants.  (No, I didn't miss the entire point of your post).

Richard:  Saw some avocado colored appliances in the past week.  I wonder if those will ever come back into fashion?  I sure hope not.

Recognizing them is one thing, Richard. Accepting them is the other. However, the most important part is simply being comfortable enough with oneself to be happy and comfortable exactly where they are.

Thanks

Bo

Yes sir, I do believe you are right on.  I once heard that our tastes, in food, change every 7 years.  So what is cool today watch out it won't be that way if a few short years.

Norma...

Sometimes we learn to not only accept, but to prefers new tastes!

Mike...

Change is good, but Thai has a little too much coconut for me ... I like the spice though and grow Thai hot peppers at home!

Rich...

I agree, you can't go wrong with the classics. We still sell a lot of historic homes in our area!

Steve...

I remember those quite well! Even the retro phase of these has passed!

Mel...

I love hot sauce on fried chicken. My favorite for chicken is Red Rooster, and inexpensive sauce that is perfect for chicken. I also like El Yucateco habanero in red and green, Also Grace crushed pepper sauce is great for chili and sloppy joes.

I am not one that takes to change very well.  I usually eat the same things at the same restraunts.  Tough rut to get out of!

Yes, everything changes...but that's not necessarily a bad thing, right? Not only do tastes change but also our points of view on different topics. I personally love change. How boring is it to always eat the same foods, follow the same routine or never expand our minds to accept new ideas?

Chris Ann...

I wonder if Stainless will have a lot of staying power?

Bo...

Why do people feel compelled to change something that they like, but might be out of style!

Don...

That makes me wonder what's next!

We have actually been considering covering some of our walls with mirrors of late. Alright, so I've been thinking about it and my wife has been telling me no.

You know my little sister used to always say "My tastes buds changed" we used to make fun of her of the frequency of the change.  One year she hated tomatoes the next she loved them it was truly bizarre.  I am one of those that get's nervous about change but quickly get's over it.  KM

Ahhh, the memories!  Avocado appliances, green shag rugs over beautiful hardwood flooring!  Hah!

In South Philadelphia, it was red carpeting, oil lamps, smoked mirrors, etc.  Sometimes there was even a Suit of Armor and a bull fighter somewhere!  Hahahaha.

I say, thank God tastes change!

Richard, what is your favorite type?  My wife is a big fan of tabasco, but here of late she has been using a lot of Daves Insanity.  She used it through her entire pregnancy.

I like just about everything when it comes to food. I can deal with most strong tastes in moderation, and I rarley change my mind! ;)

Susan...

I saw a house here decorated like that once ... it was bizarre! Crazy how that could have been in style for five minutes!

Sonja...

I had a house listed with yellow countertops last year!

Richard- My husband will put Tabasco on everything. And he loves jalepanos. But me I like a little spice but I want to be able to taste the food. Times do change but I have always tried to keep things tasteful but not too spicy! They last longer that way. Is this being neutral?
