Chilliwack's Hope Slough - the Heart of Fairfield Island

The Hope Slough is an amazing series of meandering waterways that drain the area between Chilliwack and Rosedale. The sloughs run primarily through private property but where the road crosses or parallels them, there's some amazing wildlife....Habitat includes Coho and Chum Salmon...

The sloughs are visited by waterfowl through the year... Watch for American Wigeon, Wood Duck, scaup, Bufflehead, mergansers and Mallard AND from spring to fall, Great Blue Herons are a common sight!

Recently The Fraser Valley Regional Watersheds Coalition has completed its work at Hope River - Funded by the Pacific Salmon Commission Southern Fund, instream work to restore fish habitat in Hope Slough was conducted. A viewing platform and trail allows has been added and allows for public access to the site. This project was a cooperative effort between Fisheries and Oceans Canada, City of Chilliwack Parks, Fraser Valley Regional District and the Chilliwack Fish and Game Protective Association. Many salmon returns were observed this October!

When we first moved to Chilliwack - this gift of nature was one of the reasons we chose a house right across the street on Berkeley......

So pack a picnic lunch, grab a book - bring your dog and pick your favorite bench......or ...throw down a blanket....and just savor the waning days of autumn...........but do it quick - because they're predicting snow on Friday!

How to Get There? - From Highway 1 take the Vedder Road exit (Exit #119) heading northward. The road becomes Yale Road. At Young Road turn left and continue to a bridge crossing the Hope Slough. Its bordered by Berekley and Riverside on the South and Hope River Rd on the North side......Best place to park is on Berkeley - follow the markers to the park...:-)

Hi Liz-Snow definitely comes early to your neck of the woods and likes to stay for a long, long winter. I love the pics. Great job. Anybody that might go this time of year will need a jacket and mittens too. Looks like a beautiful place. Very relaxing and inviting

Hi Pat! thank you :-) Actually here in Vancouver/Chilliwack -not so much........we're just north of Seattle........so we usually only have a few days of snow a year...........and typically can go through most of the year without ever having to wear an overcoat or boots..........but there certainly are places in Canada that require the gear :-)

Hi Liz-I forgot just long the Canadian border extends. I was thinking closer to the NY/Canadian border. Glad you live where it's not so much winter like conditions. I know that NY(like Buffalo,Syracuse) NY/Canadian area gets a lot of cold air that comes from Canada in the winter. That area in NY also get's a lot of what they call "lake effect" snow which is basically a blizzard with "feet" of snow not inches. Glad you live there instead of there. I'll have to look on the map and see where you live. Nice chatting with you. :-)

Hi Liz-Me again. Just wanted to say thank you for providing the map. That was very thoughtful. You must be pretty close to the U.S. border. I love to get to see all these different places in U.S. and Canada without every spending a nickel. Cool! Nice chatting with you. It must get crazy answering all the comments you get. Liz - You so beautifully present Chilliwack and the surrounding areas. Snow...we've had a couple of tastes of that stuff head our way, but not enough for our local ski resort at Mt. Ashland to open up. Like you, I really enjoy fall, and am not ready for the snowy days yet!

You know where all the "Hot Spots" are. I love your photos and attention to detail... Good idea with the "How to get there" at the bottom. I'm going to start adding that to the end of my posts.
