Okay, here we go with Day 5 of my 29 Days of Giving . . .

Our office is not filled with tech savvy Realtors by any stretch of the imagination and more than 7/8 of them do not have a website nor do they know how one would work.  We have a new colleague who I think is going to be fantastic with a little bit of direction & training.  Like most of us when we started, she is being bombarded with ideas and marketing schemes; some good, some not so good.

My advice to anyone starting out or even some of the more seasoned people, is to focus on your circle of influence.  ASK everyone you know "Who do you know who may be interested in Buying or Selling in the next few months?"   That is a no-brainer.

However, this particular agent is becoming overwhelmed with all the decisions that need to be made when attempting to brand yourself.  Choosing business cards, slogans, flyers, postcards, all marketing really.    She mentioned that she was going to meet with a web designer tomorrow to begin creating her personal website.  While I silently congratulated her on creating an on-line presence, I was terrified that she was going to be taken advantage of and end up grossly overpaying for something which is now so readily available for free or close to it.

Do It Yourself

My Day 5 gift was providing her with all the info she needed to set up a FREE website immediately.  We were able to look at the many templates available and work out what was going to be best for her and her market.  Helping her to discover how easy it is to make professional looking flyers, etc. directly from her own website.   Teaching her how to purchase a few domain names and redirect them back to certain pages of info on her new site.   Basically teaching her about a whole new world that's available to her and her business.

In a way it was quite sad that she seemed surprised that another Realtor would help her with this when we are kinda in competition with each other.  (We're sort of left alone to falter on our own in our office)  Personally, I feel we're all in this together and anything I can do to help a colleague create a professional image, I'll do. It can only help all of us at the office when one more knowledgable and professional realtor falls under our banner.   We're not in competition as we each know different people in different markets.  There is more than enough business to go around!

Anyways,  that is my Day 5 Gift and it really felt good to help another Realtor begin her way.  We can only rise to the top with one hand stretching up to the next level whilst one hand reaching back to help someone climb up.

Susan, that is so nice of you.  I only found out I could set up a free website after I'd already paid money to someone else for setting me up with an ugly template.
I'm sure that agent will appreciate everything you are doing ... it is overwhelming when you start out in this business, even without having to think of the technology part of it. :)

Sylvie -  isn't that the truth.  That is one thing I wish they would discuss in our Phase 1, 2 or 3 (or whatever they call them now, lol)  There is just so much more to do after earning our licences.   Overwhelming is the word.    I know that this new agent will, in turn, pass it on to the next newbie so it was a real treat for me to be able to assist.

Thanks for stopping in Sylvie and feel free to visit the 29 days site.

Susan,  "We're sort of left alone to falter on our own in our office" , unfortunately seems to be the rule and not the exception these days.

Isn't that a shame Larry?!   I hate that part of our business.  Thanks for popping in!

Susan - I'm a little more tech savvy then some agents, but continue to empathize with those who aren't.  Our profession has changed so dramatically the last couple of decades.  I still remember when MLS listings came in a published book once a week.  I can remember being either the first Realtor (or near the first), to even have a pager in the Sacramento area.  I remember begging our broker to get a fax machine for the office.  Can you imagine, or remember when we didn't have computers and fax machines in real estate offices?  I can:-)

Myrl -  the frightening thing is that it really wan't all that long ago!!!!   What was the name of the machine before photo copiers . . .  the one that had the purply-blue paper that had a smell that would either make you want to vomit or it would be addictive :0)

I was working in mortgages then and the one page, hand written offers the agents would bring in were usually illegible.   Ahhh   the good old days!    Thanks for stopping by.
