Maple Grove is one of the state's fastest growing and dynamic cities. Strong City management and excellent location has allowed high quality residential, commercial and industrial growth to take place. Portions of the City still have a unique rural flavor and the City has an exceptional parks and recreation program with over 40 developed parks. Maple Grove is truly one of Minnesota's most exciting cities.
Maple Grove is located in the north central part of Hennepin County and during its early history it was inhabited only by the Winnebago Indians who were relocated by the Federal Government. The were moved from Wisconsin because at the time Maple Grove was devoid of people. In 1851, Louis Gervais and Pierre Bottineau changed that perception when they were the first settlers to staked their claims in Maple Grove. They were protected from land speculators and were allowed to buy their claims at the fair market price.

City Government: Between 1858 and 1863, Maple Grove town meetings were held in private residences. The first town hall was purchased in 1877. The original structure was sold to the highest bidder for highest bidder for $23.00. It was later destroyed by a tornado 1939. The next town hall still stands today and it is being used as a community building. The town was incorporated in 1954 and became a city in 1974.
Early Businesses: Some of the early businesses in Maple Grove were stores, dance halls, horse racing tracks, creameries, and sawmills. Gramberts general store was somewhat of an early landmark and was located at County Road 30 and State Highway 101. Built in 1929, it was run by several different owners and was finally torn down in 2004. There was also a cheese factory, a train depot, and a rail siding along the most traveled road in Minnesota, Territorial Road.
Population Growth: Suburban sprawl reached the area by the 1950s. Initially growth occurred mainly around the lakes until I-94 was built. By 1880 the population was 1,155 and in 1950, it was only slightly higher at 1,778. But then the population boomed along with the growth of the Twin Cities and by 1990, the population was 38,756.
