In my opinion, everyone has something to say about real estate, whether it be your neighbors, your co-workers (if you have a second job besides being a successful real estate agent), your banker, your doctor, your daughter's teacher, and today for me, it was my dentist.

I went to my dentist in Eureka this morning because I was due for two fillings.  The minute I walked in the door and my dentist saw me, he greeted me nicely and of course, started talking to me about real estate!  He shared everything he knew or heard recently in the news having to do with real estate (from his point of view).  He even mentioned some news about certain communities down in the Bay Area near San Francisco where houses have gone down in value so much, that they are worth 70% of what they were worth before real estate prices started going down.  Fortunately, Humboldt County real estate and homes in Eureka California have not gone down that much.

Well anyways, at first I was a little perturbed at my dentist talking about real estate to me, something that I was suppose to be more "up to date with the latest news" and sharing it with him, not the other way around, but I was glad that he did talk to me about real estate as he put that sharp needle into my gums to numb my gums, because that was painful!  And with him talking about real estate took my mind off the pain (a little).

Well anyways, it is good that people know you are a real estate agent, and if they respect you and your knowledge of real estate, then they will get excited and talk to you about real estate the next time they see you. So do not be shy and join in.

Great point! I was with an employee a few years ago and we bumped into a friend of his at a local restaurant. I was blown away when the friend said, "Oh, I thought you were still with such and such." I said, "JAVI! You mean you didn't send an email, card, letter, fax, phone call or instant message ALL of your family and friends and let them know you changed companies 8 months ago????" What a great reason to contact people you only see ocassionally to let them know you've changed jobs or have a new product or ANYTHING to touch your warm market.

Yes that is how I get so many of my clients, walking and talking real

estate, now is a great time for that too. With all the news coverage

and lender changes, most everyone wants to talk about. We just

have to get out and about.

Talk it and they will come to you.  Be the expert with everyone you come in contact with on a daily basis.  Great reminder.

Thank you everyone for agreeing.  I think also that Valerie made a great point that as professional real estate agents, we should also be the experts at our business, be current with our markets and be up to date with the real estate news all around us, so that when we do come in contact with someone, they value our relationship even more and will come to us for their real estate business.

Good post......I went to a BBQ last weekend and probably talked with a dozen strangers about the housing market.  Everyone enjoys talking housing because it is a familiar subject that everyone can have an honest and personal opinion on.

I try and bring being a Realtor up to anyone that will listen. Once said I get bombarded with questions. I enjoy the discussions and try to shed light on the fact that its not that bad.

Good post, and so true.  I wear my name tag everywhere, much to my wife's dismay.  I can't tell you how many leads and new clients I have received because of this.

Once you tell some one that your an agent, they will remember that and always associate you with that topic. It works, people do the same with me

In our area almost everybody has a real estate license (it seems) and most conversations gravitate towards that subject. Most of the conversations today are about how to stay in the business while working at another job.

OK...OK this is a tongue in cheek pun, but just like when bad weather is happening, it is what everyone wants to talk about.

If we are proud of our profession, then we should be talking about it to everyone so that they know we are available to help them or their friends. It always helps to ask them if they know anyone that wants to buy or sell real estate during that conversation.

Great story, The Dentist shows a genuine interest in his patients by knowing what they do and what excites them. This is a lesson to be learned, we should know more about others who serve us and that will lead into more business for ourselves.

Hey Thavisak,

I love it when people want to talk real estate.  I tell them what I see and how I am helping my clients.
