As a new Citizen I am perhaps more aware than some lucky enough to have been born here of the value of being here. I chose to be here and to embrace my new land and its culture. Our way of life; our democracy; our ability to know right from wrong and to stand up for justice and our freedoms which so many of us take for granted. Veterans Day must be about remembering. We must remember that without the sacrifice of so many who have laid down their lives to protect our freedoms, we would not have the ability to enjoy our lives and all that we stand for.Iojima

The greatest generation of both this country and indeed the United Kingdom where I was born - was undoubtedly the generation that fought for us in World War II. All they knew was that without victory there would be tyranny. Without victory there would be evil. Without victory there would be no freedom.

The victory was a victory for freedom, but it was a victory won at an enormous cost in lives. That generation understood way better than we do now that however much you may hate violence and war - and let's be honest, only the truly insane love either one of them - sometimes wars have to be fought and evil has to be stamped out to preserve the greater good.

The victory allowed us to continue with our way of life. To attend schools and colleges;  churches, synagogues and mosques. It allowed us to continue to hand power from one President to another no matter what the political party without violence. One Congress to another in a similar way as the politicians bow to the will of the people. The victory allowed us to raise our families and build our communities and chase our dreams and even to reach for the stars - and get there.

You who laid down your lives in the name of freedom have given us all of this and so much more. You bought these things for us with your blood and most of us don't think about you very often. We think about the laughter of our children and not your cries of pain. When we go to the beach, we look in wonder as the sunlight sparkles across the water and we certainly do not see your limbs spread across a battlefield.

We are all so busy chasing the American Dream that we rarely pause and think about the great American Sacrifice. It was Lincoln who referred to it as "The last full measure of devotion".

September of 2001 taught us that freedom has a price as the descendents of the evil of World War Two brought death and destruction to our land.. It was perhaps a wake up call and we did wake up. But today - just a few short years later, we seem to be falling asleep all over again.  

The parralells between Europe of the 1930s and the World of right now is too close for my personal comfort at least. And so today more young men and women are paying the price of freedom on our behalf.

I have already mentioned Lincoln in this short piece and as I think about how to pay tribute to those who gave everything for this country, I am drawn once again to his words - words written enroute to a Cemetery filled with thousands of graves in a small Pennsylvania town called Gettysburg.

He said: "We cannot dedicate. . .we cannot consecrate. . . we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men - living and dead - who struggled here have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. . . .  "

"It is for us - the living - to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us. . .that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion. . . that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain. . . that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom. . . and that government of the people. . .by the people. . .for the people. . . shall not perish from the earth." 

This was Lincoln's challenge in 1863 and it remains ours today. I for one know for sure that it is because of their sacrifice that we are still able to shout out -

Let Freedom Ring!

Good Post.

I noticed you didn't write about the Revolutionary War when we stomped the British.

That is when our freedom first started when we beat the British.  Every war we fought was important but the Revolutionary War was the most important, for if we hadn't beat those redcoats we would not have had anything to fight for later.

God's hand was truly in the creation of this great nation.  God Bless America!

P.S. When I was young, this holiday was referred to as 'Armistice Day'...celebrating the peace that comes from war!!!

Thanks, for making us all think and remember what this day is all about.  BTW, the Iojima statue is the most memorable and moving to me. Went on a night sight-seeing tour a few too many years in D.C. and it was an amazing sight in the nights silence.

It saddens me that no one recognizes this day on a large scale anymore. We don't appreciate our veterans as a country. When they are gone and we have no one to protect us, then we will appreciate what we once had.

Thank you for recognizing them today.

There are many programs around the country that are in place to help out the veterans and their families and the current soldiers in Iraq , etc. I urge EVERYONE to at least write a thank you card or something and get it to them by Christmas. It could really make someone's day and will leave you feeling like you made a difference.

Simon - powerful words by Lincoln, even more powerful to read them while overlooking the battlefields of Gettysburg, especially on Little Round Top or Cemetery Ridge.

I have asked many people to find and thank a veteran today, almost all of them had the same answer.

WHY?

How disappointing that so few realize the sacrifices made, and being made,so that they might have a holiday today.

I would like to dedicate this song to all my fellow Viet Nam vets and today's reurning Iraq & Afghanistan heroes.

Great tribute to our Veterans Simon!  These noble Americans are our sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, fathers, mothers, family and friends who we honor today.  Mere words are not enough to convey to each of you the love, thanks, and respect we have for you for your courage and sacrifice for our country.  .  

Veteran's Day Tribute 

When America had an urgent need,
These brave ones raised a hand;
No hesitation held them back;
They were proud to take a stand. 

They left their friends and family;
They gave up normal life;
To serve their country and their God,
They plowed into the strife.  

They fought for freedom and for peace
On strange and foreign shores;
Some lost new friends; some lost their lives
In long and brutal wars. 

Other veterans answered a call
To support the ones who fought;
Their country had requirements for
The essential skills they brought.  

We salute each and every one of them,
The noble and the brave,
The ones still with us here today,
And those who rest in a grave.  

So here's to our country's heroes;
They're a cut above the rest;
Let's give the honor that is due

I thank everyone for their comments. I thank the Vets who have posted here for their service. And I am truly shocked at what Mike Saunders posted in terms of "why?" The mere fact that question was asked should perhaps tell those of you who doubt it, the root cause of the trouble we find ourselves in. America is losing site of who America is supposed to be. The shining light on the hill for all the world to see and to aspire to become. There is little pride here now and there is a "give me" mentality as opposed to the sacrifice we honor today when we salute our Veterans. If you still wish to sing LET FREEDOM RING then I strongly urge you to WAKE UP AMERICA.

Simon - I agree with John.  Not only is your writing style a pleasure to read - you also have insightful points of view which interest me. 

I have commented frequently that our adopted citizens like you or Jon Zolsky bring an remarkable frame of reference to these pages.  It is bothersome and inspiring that you and Jon so frequently demonstrate an acute grasp of the fundamental truths of our society while our "born here done that" neighbors who have accepted the benefits of our nation since birth have not a clue. 

Thank you Simon for your wit and wisdom - on this Veterans Day and on every other day.  It is a priviledge to know you personally.
