17 Comments on Veterans Day! Do not forget why we have the freedom to write here
Simon:
Good Post.
I noticed you didn't write about the Revolutionary War when we stomped the British.
That is when our freedom first started when we beat the British. Every war we fought was important but the Revolutionary War was the most important, for if we hadn't beat those redcoats we would not have had anything to fight for later.
God's hand was truly in the creation of this great nation. God Bless America!
Simon,
Brother fighting against brother on opposite sides of our Civil War for freedom and principle...says it all...LET FREEDOM RING!!! Thanks, Fran
P.S. When I was young, this holiday was referred to as 'Armistice Day'...celebrating the peace that comes from war!!!
Simon,
Thanks, for making us all think and remember what this day is all about. BTW, the Iojima statue is the most memorable and moving to me. Went on a night sight-seeing tour a few too many years in D.C. and it was an amazing sight in the nights silence.

Simon ~ Thank you for this post. What a man Lincoln truly was, no man was so eloquently gifted as Mr. Lincoln.
Titanium - yes I am aware of the Revolutionary War. I'm also aware tha this day was picked because of the end of WWI.
Great post....I cannot thank those who've served our country and served to protect us. I'm so grateful. And brother, thanks for writing this post to recognize them. They're definitely underappreciated.
Simon, wonderful post honoring the sacrifices of our Vets--We live free solely because so many were willing and still are willing to put their lives on the line.
Hi Simon, Sometimes I think "new citizens" are more appreciative of what we have here in our great country than are natural born citizens.
It saddens me that no one recognizes this day on a large scale anymore. We don't appreciate our veterans as a country. When they are gone and we have no one to protect us, then we will appreciate what we once had.
Thank you for recognizing them today.
There are many programs around the country that are in place to help out the veterans and their families and the current soldiers in Iraq , etc. I urge EVERYONE to at least write a thank you card or something and get it to them by Christmas. It could really make someone's day and will leave you feeling like you made a difference.
Simon,
Thanks for the post my friend. I flagged this one for a feature on activerain and also featured it here on silent majority. Thanks to all the veterans that served our country!
Congratulations this post is now featured in the Silent Majority Group of Active Rain.
Simon - powerful words by Lincoln, even more powerful to read them while overlooking the battlefields of Gettysburg, especially on Little Round Top or Cemetery Ridge.
I have asked many people to find and thank a veteran today, almost all of them had the same answer.
WHY?
How disappointing that so few realize the sacrifices made, and being made,so that they might have a holiday today.
I would like to dedicate this song to all my fellow Viet Nam vets and today's reurning Iraq & Afghanistan heroes.
Great tribute to our Veterans Simon! These noble Americans are our sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, fathers, mothers, family and friends who we honor today. Mere words are not enough to convey to each of you the love, thanks, and respect we have for you for your courage and sacrifice for our country. .
Veteran's Day Tribute
When America had an urgent need,
These brave ones raised a hand;
No hesitation held them back;
They were proud to take a stand.
They left their friends and family;
They gave up normal life;
To serve their country and their God,
They plowed into the strife.
They fought for freedom and for peace
On strange and foreign shores;
Some lost new friends; some lost their lives
In long and brutal wars.
Other veterans answered a call
To support the ones who fought;
Their country had requirements for
The essential skills they brought.
We salute each and every one of them,
The noble and the brave,
The ones still with us here today,
And those who rest in a grave.
So here's to our country's heroes;
They're a cut above the rest;
Let's give the honor that is due
To our country's very best.
I thank everyone for their comments. I thank the Vets who have posted here for their service. And I am truly shocked at what Mike Saunders posted in terms of "why?" The mere fact that question was asked should perhaps tell those of you who doubt it, the root cause of the trouble we find ourselves in. America is losing site of who America is supposed to be. The shining light on the hill for all the world to see and to aspire to become. There is little pride here now and there is a "give me" mentality as opposed to the sacrifice we honor today when we salute our Veterans. If you still wish to sing LET FREEDOM RING then I strongly urge you to WAKE UP AMERICA.
Thanks for the reminder. These are definitely troubling times. Hopefully freedom will prevail.
I agree with Cheri- veterans are underappreciated. They have done so much for us and yet some people do not honor them at all. How sad.
Thanks Simon for this thoughtful post. I am glad to have someone here on AR that understands what this country is all about, usually more than most of our citizens born here.
I am not that far from Gettysburg, if you are ever in the area to tour it!
Simon - I agree with John. Not only is your writing style a pleasure to read - you also have insightful points of view which interest me.
I have commented frequently that our adopted citizens like you or Jon Zolsky bring an remarkable frame of reference to these pages. It is bothersome and inspiring that you and Jon so frequently demonstrate an acute grasp of the fundamental truths of our society while our "born here done that" neighbors who have accepted the benefits of our nation since birth have not a clue.
Thank you Simon for your wit and wisdom - on this Veterans Day and on every other day. It is a priviledge to know you personally.
