My Daddy is my Hero.  Today is veterans day and for more reasons that one, it makes me think about my daddy.  My dad was in the Navy.  He joined right after high school and for the next 4 years while my mom finished high school and went to college for two years they had a long distance romance.  Sometimes across most of the world.
Nine years ago we had a scare with my daddy having cancer.  In fact, his surgery was 11/11/99.  9 years ago today.  My dad was born in 1940 to a farmer and raised on a family farm. In 1999 already outlived the age of his father and most of his uncles on his father's side of the family.  I remember waiting and watching a special on the World War I vets when I was in the waiting room with my family waiting to hear news from the doctor about my dad's tumor removal.  I am grateful for every day I have had with my father still alive as a cancer survivor these past 9 years.  He was not declared cancer free 9 years ago.  The doctors told us they got as much as they could, but cancer cells still remained in the margin.  He undergoes oral treatment and will for the rest of his life.  My daddy does not come across as having ever been sick at all.  He is a young at heart 68 year old.
My parents were married in 1964, and after they found out I was on the way my father was shipped out to the South Pole on an ice breaker for the second time.
My Daddy was on another continent the day I was born.  I did not get to meet him until I was 5 weeks old.  My mom left the Naval base when my dad shipped out and came from New Jersey back to Georgia to be with her family while he was away. I just wanted to say that I'm so very proud of my father's service to his country.

He's a hero. My hero. I'm very proud of my Daddy and his service to our country and I'm also proud that he decided to have such a great attitude when he found out he had cancer.  He was raised to fight and continues to do so.   And he's a great daddy.  As you can see from my face I loved him the minute I met him.

Tammy,

What a sweet tribute to your father.  My father too was a veteran, I have a picture similar to yours of my dad in his uniform.  He served in the Navy during WWII.  He joined the service when he was 17 years old, he had to have his mother sign the consent form for him.  He taught me to love my country and to honor the people that are willing to sacrifice their time, energy and perhaps their lives to preserve our freedom.

Happy Veterans Day

Bob- I recently got a bunch of old pictures from my mom to load onto a memory card to put in a digital picture frame for a Christmas gift for a couple of family members, that is one of my favorite pictures.  The story behind the story of that photo is he has no shirt on because I'd just thrown up on him. LOL.

Paul- My dad is the best.  He taught me to fish, shoot, cut grass well and love to do it, respect others and to never quit.  My dad also taught me to be competitive, he never "let" me win, he made me earn it... at cards, checkers, board games, kickball, you name it.  I remember him calling out my spelling words, teaching me how to drive, teaching me how to back a trailer (how many girls can do that?). I was so scared I was going to loose my dad 9 years ago, it was a life lesson.  I talk to my parents EVERY day. I will pass on your thanks to him.  I've already seen him today, but will talk to him again later. And thank you for that.

Jeff- I will pass on your thanks.  He does deserve them.  Thank you for giving them to him.

Erika- My dad was 20 when he was the first person in his family to graduate from high school.  He had to repeat two years.  Not because his grades were bad, but because he missed too many days of school having to stay home and help in the farm.  He also taught me the value of an education.  I have my daddy's "sailor hat"  I loved to play with it when I was little.  I also used to love to wear one of his navy shirts. that had Lankford stenciled across the bottom.  When I got married I kept my maiden name because it's my dad's.  It is who I am.  Thank you.

great post Tammy.   My daddy was in the Army and he was not as lucky as your father to survive cancer. He fought just as hard against cancer as he did for his country.    I know y'all cherish everyday :)            Many thanks to your father (and all Veterans of EVERY war and peace time).  Thank you for protecting and defending my rights and freedoms.  It is greatly appreciated :)

Hi Tammy,

What a loving tribute to your Dad. So nice to hear that you still have him with you! Mine was one of the WWII Vets that I too admire so much.

BTW, that photo of your Mom and Dad almost looks like some of mine. I was married the same year in 64'.

Lynda- I love that picture of my mom.  She doesn't like cameras much and there are not too many after she was an adult.  I also loved that car.  We kept it until the 70's.  I wish I had it today. I feel truly blessed to still have my parents.  I still have one grandparent also, she is 90.  Thank you.

Elizabeth- I do really love my mom and Daddy so much.   My daddy is my hero.  He taught me to be strong.  God Bless you too and thank you.

Donna- I will pass along your thanks, I do love my Daddy.  Thank you for thinking of him as a hero too.

James- I couldn't agree more... they all need thank yous and blessings from God.  Thank you for your kind words.

Hi Tammy, I'm glad you have such a wonderful father and hero. Your are a lucky lady. I love the photos. Your love flows freely through the words of your story. I bet he is just as proud of you. Did I mention how much respect and admiration I have for farmers? They to me are the back bone of this country and deserving of so much more support.

Thanks Dinah- I really appreciate prayers.  I can't get over the skinny Dad picture.  I've always carried a picture of my Daddy in my wallet.

Lisa- Me too I love farmers.  My uncle Richard still lives on and runs my grandfather's farm.  I live in Putnam County which is the Dairy capital of Georgia.  I love to drive down the roads and see the black and white Holstein cows grazing in the fields.  And yes you are right, my Daddy tells me he is proud of me. A lot in fact.  I do love my Daddy, but I've always known how much he loves me too.  Thanks for being able to read it in my words.

Tammy, What a wonderful tribute to your Dad.  I really loved the pictures.  I'd say he's a lucky man to have you as his daughter and you're a lucky girl.  My dad died when I was 18 so I'm envious but happy for you.  Bless you and your Dad.

Marian- Thank you for being happy for me.  My parents have given me so much and I don't mean "things" although they aren't bad in that department either.  But last Christmas my dad wrote "to the love of my life, my wife" on my mom's gift tag after 44 years of marriage.  That's the best gift ... he loves my mom.
