BIMBO          What a wonderful day it was when we wondered into the pet store.....not really intending to make a purchase...just to play with the puppies.

But there were these 2 little guys.. little balls of fur...one was white and one was black, and they were so o o happy to have someone come to play with them!

Being the logical, sensible, cautious, procrastinating fence sitter that I am.....we left without a warm ball of fur.  In the car we all talked about how precious they were and Lenda from the back seat chimed in and said "If you get the black one, you should name it Sambo  like "Little Black Sambo"!  And Jim from the front seat added "If you get the white one, you should name it Bimbo like "Little Blonde Bimbo"!

We all laughed at Lenda's cuteness and Jim's quick come back...but at the end of the day there was an odd feeling that more was yet to come.

The next day came with lingering thought of furry creatures with lovable licks and I made a call to the pet store...just to check on the little guys.  "Yes, we still have the little white one, but the little black one was SOLD!"

What?  Could that be?  They had actually SOLD that adorable, lovable man's best friend that was written in the stars to be mine?  The urgency was established...."So what can I do to reserve the little white one"?

Credit Card..............DONE!

BIMBO

And so began the life of a household being run by a little white designer Maltipoo dog named BIMBO!

From the designer clothes - t-shirts, sweaters, bikinis, dresses...

To the tricks for treats - "What does the big dog say?" R u u f f    "What does the mean dog say?"  G r r r r   "Sit like a lady!"    a ladylike sit with one leg stuck out              "Dance like a ballerina!"   the cutest little ballerina twirl you ever did see!

...there is never a dull moment to be had.

We still look back and think "What did we ever do without her?"  or "How did we get so lucky to have the best little dog in the world?"

....and at the end of the day, we realize that we have joined the ranks of the happiest people in the world....

A dog can bring so much happiness in your life.  A companion to sit on the couch with, somebody to greet you at the door.

Little Black Sambo

Main article: Little Black Sambo

Several origins of the term itself have been proposed, but it gained prominence through the children's book The Story of Little Black Sambo by Helen Bannerman, in 1898. It was the story of a boy named Sambo who outwitted a group of hungry tigers. The book contains many Caribbean references.

The setting of Bannerman's story was in India — as can be seen by the presence of tigers and the reference to ghee. The book's original illustrations show a Sambo character resembling a golliwog, a European version sometimes viewed as an iconic, racist "darky" stereotype, which could be taken as a stereotype of African people. As the book made its way across the Atlantic to the U.S., the illustrations were adapted to the possibly more obvious stereotype known as blackface in the U.S. At this time, the racism of the term was not overt or hostile. But the unconscious racism evident in the blackface stereotype was clear. When the eventual public uproar brought the issue to the attention of the general public, some renounced the use of the term "Sambo," but others embraced it as a racial slur.[citation needed] Thus, the use of "Sambo" as a racist term went from being unintentional to being open and derogatory.[citation needed]

Though once a term of endearment, this harmless phrase is now considered politically incorrect.

Lewis - NO Kidding!  And none of that will be needed as you can see from my post, she is a very smart girl...housebreaking was a breeze, and Thank you...we do enjoy her very much indeed!

Russ - You are so right about that....she can be heard sqealing with delight before the door is even opened and she is by side with every move I make in the house!

Thomas - My humblest apologies as there was certainly no intention to be politically incorrect.  Only a quote from a friend that was used as a "term of endearment".

Great post Deb.  I have a tiny yorkie and she has filled the empty nest.  I used to think like Lewis, but have not found out I missed out on a great friend that loves to see me each and everyday.  Like Bimbo, Emme was easy to potty train.  I love the photos and your story telling abilities.  If you were not such a great realtor you could become a writer!!!

I have known Debbie for years and she does not have a racist thought in her head.  I am sorry Thomas was offended, but every comment made is not intended to be a slur.  Thank you Thomas for exercising free speech, after all this is what makes our Nation the greatest!

Ilyce - Thank you, I think she is adorable too!  You just don't realize how much joy a dog can bring until you have one.

Hi Tami - It can be catching can't it.  I have so many people saying if I let Bimbo have puppies that they would want one.   I am sure Debbie is enjoying her little fur ball too!

I'm Tami's assistant.

I totally get it and agree with you.  I have been on the fence for about 2 years about getting another dog- we had been without a dog for about 8 years and wasn't sure I wanted to go back again.

Now I can't imagine my life without my little Oscar- we all just love him so much.

Your puppy is just adorable!

Yes I am the Lenda the one in the back seat and also the one that fell in love with both of the little fur balls.  Also the one that was broken hearted that our little Sambo was sold.  But also delighted that Bimbo was soon to become Debbie's End of the Day Happiness.  Debbie I was there with you through all these events and have loved seeing Bimbo's tricks.  But reading your blog reminded me of one of the most happy times we shared.
