Such an ugly word isn't it?

Maybe I've been sheltered but I've never really felt that word before nor have I used it. HATE is such a strong lonely word...thinking about it makes me incredibly sad.

Today for the first time in my life I "felt" hate.  Hard, Cold, Ugly, Hate and it made me more than sad, it made me mad and it brought me to tears.

My small town buried a war hero today, a fallen child, a human being, who fought and died in Iraq. He was newly married and a real nice guy by all accounts. He gave his life and left behind a family who loved him dearly. I didn't know him personally but I felt the incredible sadness of his death.

This is not a Political/Religious Post nor is it a War Protest post...please  I ask that you don't turn it into such. This is a post about Hate...simply hate.

I had the mid day shift in my office in Hampstead New Hampshire. My office is located right in the center of town...next to a church and school.

The funeral was scheduled for 1 pm today. I believe nearly the entire town showed up and then some. At about 11:00 a.m. we were notified that there would be a protest, an anti-war demonstration and that they would be on the public walkway in front of our office.

They had a "right to protest and be heard" and we had no choice as to allow them to do their thing, freedom of speech, public property...they had the right.

To say we were upset puts it mildly...embarrassed that during a funeral of a local boy...people would do this...we just didn't understand but we were resigned to whatever would happen.

ProtesterI've seen news accounts of these types of things...but the TV was somehow a barrier a safe barrier.  I know these things are very real but I never expected this.

It was small scale with only 3 protesters and many more police. I watched from the safety of my window...my insulation slipping away slowly.

I could not believe what I was seeing...what the signs said. I mean someone was being buried here, people, humans had broken hearts here and these people were spewing hateful things for all to see and hear.

Could these people possibly be local people?? I had to find out.

I took out my camera and went outside with another lady.  Real ugly hate filled our little street corner. I made the mistake of saying "aren't you ashamed of yourself doing this?" I can't repeat what was said back to me by a woman who delighted in verbally attacking me.  But I looked hate in the eye today...I've never seen what hate looked like, up close like that.

These 3 "people" were flown in by a "church" from the mid-west (Kansas) to spread the word...and it was sickening.Protest in Hampstead

I can't seem to shake the stench. I'm not sure what they were protesting and the reaction of the towns people was shock and dismay.

Some people drove by blowing horns and some gesturing with their fingers but nothing bothered these people.

Finally a man...very gruff looking came walking up, he seemed to come out of nowhere, carrying a huge American flag and he stood in our parking lot about 15 feet away from the protesters. He stood there holding the flag all alone.

We didn't know what he was up to...was he one of them?  Then the police came and talked to him...he stayed and held that flag tightly.  Suddenly, other people joined him in our parking lot and they stood together with his large flag between them. They just stood quietly by, while hate was delivered in their direction.

Our parking lot crowd grew, the protesters seemed to shrink, maybe it was all my imagination but they seemed to get smaller.

Pride filled my heart, even while it was breaking, for the pain this group of protesters were causing.

the guy with the flagSuddenly an officer went over to the protesters and they packed it up...apparently they only had a permit to protest an hour and a half. Then the people in our parking lot started to dissipate and our Admin went out to thank the big guy holding the flag. He told her all we can do is out number them

Hate...what a waste of an emotion. I saw hate today and it was as ugly as I had imagined it to be. But, I have never heard nor imagined that such disturbing rantings could come from the mouths and hearts of fellow human beings.

The stench is overwhelming and the sadness is suffocating. They left a part of me that will never be the same.

Edited to insert a photo of the guy with the flag. I have no idea who he is but he was soon joined by other people.

Edited April 26 2007

The Guy with the Flag is a member of the Patriot Guard Riders (PGR). His name is Frank and I'll be meeting him tomorrow. He and the other members of the Patriot Guard Riders have turned into hero's for many people throughout the country and overseas.  Symbols of hope and bright shiny stars that guided us on a dark day in Hampstead New Hampshire as I'm sure, they have done on other equally dark days throughout the country.

Bless the people who showed their pride by standing with the man holding the American Flag! We live is such an amazing country and have incredibly brave troops giving endless sacrifice. I hate(and yes I absolutely mean hate) the ignorance of the heartless people that had no respect for a fallen hero and his grieving family & friends.

What a powerful post, Monika. Hate is an emotion that is so hard to wrap my mind around. You said it perfect when you called it strong and lonely. I am happy for the large man and the flag - and those who joined him. What a thing to witness.

We have had several fallen soldiers in our community.  It is so very sad and tragic.  All you want to do is support the grieving family, friends and community but unfortunately others see it differently, which I guess is what makes the U.S. the free country that it is.  HOWEVER.  Enough said.  So sorry you had to witness this in your community.

Monika-WOW, that was a special gift to you.  I hope you don't think I am crazy.  You might have saw hate at first and truly I understand but based on your story, one man, one gruffy looking man made a statement, not only did he make a statement, the statement was so powerful other's joined him, all of the people joined together  probably changed the outcome of the day.  That is what I mean by Transforming lives one person at a time!  This one single human being brought a group of you from hate to pride.  That is amazing to me!

We have a voice.....We can make a difference....  This was a great post!

Monika - The callousness of some individuals is truly a staggering thing. The most disgusting part of their "free speech" display is that they honestly feel that they are doing God a service by doing what they're doing. Just because you have the right to free speech does not entitle you to use it in a crass and vulgar manner. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

I'm so sorry that the slain boy's family had to suffer such despicable treatment. Good for the man with the flag and those who rallied silently around him. That says more than the signs of these protesters a thousand-fold.

Monika- I see much more positive than negative here, think of the gruffy man, think of the heart-broken family, think of the fallen soldier, imagine how powerful and proud the family must have felt for all of these people to stand together, holding what probably the fallen soldier most likely held closest to his heart.  The American Flag!  This to me is a complete Tribute to This Young Man who died for our freedom and Our Country.

Moni:

I thought everyone in this country had one thing in common, supporting our troops?  That is good PR but is it the truth?  How sad and outrageous that they were justifying their heinous, hateful behavior and total lack of respect for a grieving family by throwing God in the mix.  Those posters, I am heartbroken for that family.  I cannot believe that they had to witness such a thing while burying their family member.  He was someone's son, their child!  And as unnatural and heartbreaking as it is to have to bury your child, you have the images of those posters to remember...at his funeral!  How incredibly HATEFUL!  Who treats another person like that?  Perhaps I too am a bit naive...I am overcome with so many different emotions right now.

I am glad that there was a bright spot in the day for you, seeing more love than hate in the man with the flag and the crowd that continued to grow around him.  Thank you for sharing.

Monica,

The ironic part of this story is that this young man had put his life on the line so that people could live in a free society. Freedom of speech and freedom to assemble are only a few freedoms that we as a country have. That fact that brave young men and women die everyday for ours and others rights says it all. I believe the protesters are a product of "brainwashing" and are ignorant. Lets all remember this young man and all others who pay the ultimate sacrifice for us to live each day to the fullest. GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Monika - This "church" from Kansas - which is nothing more than an extended family of one man, his children and their spouses claiming to be a church - holds these protests at many funerals and have done so for many, many years now.  They claim everything wrong with the world - including terrorist attacks and the current war - is the result of gays living in our society.  They started out only protesting at funerals of gay men, but in recent years they've shifted to include protests at the funerals of our fallen military men and women.

It's sad, very sad, and some politicians have been trying to ban protests at funerals, but I don't know if anything has come of that yet.

Sorry that you had to witness this.  But this hate is alive and well and with posts such as yours, perhaps it will open other people's eyes to the hate that is out there.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Monika...

I am blown away by this post and this story. In all the years I have lived I have discovered that hatred is predominate in our society. It never stops. It's just astounding that people like this find ways to hide their hatred behind God. It's shameful. Truly shameful. I too do not know what else to say. What I feel right now runs to deep for mere words.

Brian...Free society, Freedom of speech and freedom to assemble yes they are the freedoms that we Americans have no matter how shameful and hateful... they have  the right to speak. How sad that people die to defend that right and others just simply abuse it. Thank you so much Brian for commenting.

Don...How do they afford to do this? Air fare, hotels ...where is the money coming from? Why would people support such  a thing? I simply can't shake the image. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment and shedding some light on it/them.

TLW...Thank you so much for your very understanding comments. I was afraid my post would be too negative..too dark but my feelings needed to be expressed somehow. I can't believe that such hatred exists in our world. I can't imagine what it would have felt like if it was a big crowd. Three of them was more than enough.

Monika - I don't know how they afford these protests, but apparently he is a former civil rights attorney, so perhaps he made some money back then.  At least some of his children are attorneys, too.

If you're interested, here is the Wikipedia link for this group. Some of the information here is offensive, but I think it's all true.  It confirmed everything that I already knew about this group.  The protests at funerals apparently started in the late 80's.  His "church" has 71 members, and 60 of them are related to him.

There are people who volunteer to attend military funerals to act as a buffer between these people and the mourners.  Perhaps the man with the flag was one of these volunteers - drawing attention away from the hate.

Monika - Bear's daughter went to Phillips Exeter Academy with this young man.  How very sad - that his life was snuffed out, that those few people marred an already heart-wrenching tough day for that family.  How very brave of that one man to stand there with that flag, alone against those spewing their insipid messages, until others joined him.  How great that message was that started with one man and our flag.

Monika - By chance, a journalist whose email I am on to receive newsclips, sent me a YouTube link to a music video this group created.  It basically says how we're all sinners and we're all going to hell.  They even have a line saying we will "eat our children."  Really.  That's what they sing.

I was going to include the link to the video, but I won't add that smut to your post.  I just thought it was ironic that the video would be emails to me as I was reading the comments here.

I don't understand how this group survives, but they've been at this for years.  It's sick and disgusting.  They blame all of this world's woes on gays, and now they've transformed that into protesting military funerals and disrespecting those who die protecting our country.  In my mind, that is quite a stretch, but their funeral protests have been going on for years and years around the country.

Again - I just want to thank you for sharing your experience with this with others.  I'm sure it will help open eyes and hearts to the hate that many in this country experience all the time.

I remember seeing the eyes of Hate growing up in Oklahoma.  It is not a pretty thing to experience.  When I was very young, I experienced this hate first hand -- I was taken by some older kids, tied up on a cross and rocks were hurled until I was a bloody mess.  Someone finally decided to intervene.  When my dad took me from house to house showing the parents what their children had done -- several simply said good -- we don't want anyone Jewish in our neighborhood!  Since that life changing experience, I have dedicated myself to helping people see things from another's point of view - however, there always seem to be some that thrive on hate and negativity!  Perphas, we could send them off to an island of hate mongers so they can leave the rest of us alone.

unfortunately there are people out there who use the word of GOD for their own purposes, albiet twisted hatefull reasons.. it saddens me that such people exist in our enlightened and modern times. Luckily, those of us that dont carry such blind hatred far outnumber those kinds of individuals. When we stand together like you did that day, it takes away their "power". My boyfriend is a soldier, and id hope that if anything happened to him while hes fighting for our country, that i never have to come across such negativity and hatred as those people from Kansas have shown.

Monica,

Thanks so very much for sharing this story ... our son is a Marine and proudly serves our country. The townspeoples response to these twisted protesters is one of the most profound examples of what is right with our country . Our town too recently buried a native son ( a fellow Marine ) and the mere threat of this type of " protest " was a major concern . Thank you for sharing a great example where good overshadowed the hate being spewed by these heartless individuals . I haven't been in New Hampshire for many years but your story has inspired me to visit once again . God Bless America and God bless the people of Hampstead !

Monika,

I would like to thank you for the comments of your feelings. I'm a member of the Patriot Guard for NH. While I could not be at this mission, my girlfriend and others were there at invite of the family. They performed famously as expected. I call the Patriot Guard my extended family, because they are just that.

If them being there helped you and the family, then we did our job. We are not there to be a 'counter protester'. We gp were we are invited only, but we all agree that our mission is to the fallen, and their family/friends. We do what is needed to try and help them only.

Those who have stood for us protecting our rights need for someone to help them when times dictate it. We try to be that help, any way we can.

I'm sorry for the loss of the family, and the town of Hampstead.

NH PGR.

Monica, Thank you for bringing this to light for others to see. I have another perspective on what the WBC is about. Yes, their leader is Fred Phelps whom I understand was a practicing attorney who was disbarred for unethical behavior I believe. There are something like 11 attorney family members in their group. Although some family members hold down daily jobs I think much of their income comes from lawsuits. If they show up and do their 'show' and it upsets someone into a physical confrontation, they may sue the city for not protecting them. i.e. more money in the coffers. I have experienced their vile and hate for a fallen navy seal in Hood River, Oregon last year. We (PGR) stood in front of them with our backs turned (an extreme biker community insult), while they screamed their hatred in our face. We did not look at them, acknowledge them or talk to them. We stood steady and strong. We revved some motorcycles to drown them out as family and guests arrived. There were also members of the community who stood stong in a show of support. I heard third hand from the family and guests that they did not see nor hear them. I think they (WBC) depend on the shock of others to get into confrontations. As you have experienced, you cannot talk to these people. They are in your face. We as Patriot Guard Riders are invited by the families of our heroes to honor our fallen and show respect and appreciation for them, their families and the communities in which they live. We will attempt to block the view of protestors and work with local law enforcement everywhere we go. We don't talk much about these UG's (uninvited guests). Its all about the sacrifices that our brave military men and women and their families and friends make for our protection and freedoms.

I'm sorry you and others had to witness this spectacle. I think this man with the flag and the people who stood by him are the example of the silent majority in America.

Rick...I have so much respect for you and the Guard. Prior to this I had little knowledge of the Patriot Guard and never heard of this group of protectors before. You all deserve a Big Thank You!  Does the Patriot Guard have a website?  Thank you so much for your presence that day!

I am glad that you did what you did.  One thing that you got wrong is that they do not have a Constitutional Right to be heard.  However, they do have have a constitutional right to say it.  Did you know that the First Amendment to the Constitution was actually written to protect political speech and not everyday speech?  It was drafted because people were sometimes jailed because their opponent didn't like what was being said about them.

Anyway, thanks for being there.

Monica, thank you for asking for our website information. I guess I was caught up in the emotion of your topic and neglected to add it to my post. I would like to point out, that although Patriot Guard Riders was started by bikers, anyone can join as long as they agree with our mission statement and are there to show respect. Membership is free. Thank you.

You, the town of Hampstead, and the family of Army Captain Jonathan Grassbaugh were exposed to the raw nerve ending of hate that day.  I drove from Southern New England to stand with my fellow PGR members to honor CPT G, not realizing the uninvited guests (UG's) were actually going to be there.  We had members from many states arrive that day, one from Long Island NY.  Coincidently,  one of our star members is from your little town, and played a big part in our participation.  That type of hate will make you want to cry, or start swinging.  I think most folks realize their message is so extreme no one takes them seriously.  Thank you for taking the time to mention it on your blog.  As long as the WBC exists, there will be a PGR to quietly but proudly stand between them and the sanctity of the military funeral.

Monika,

I'd seen the story on this brave young man some days ago on WMUR (for those not from New Hampshire, this is our state's major news channel). About that time, a regular dialogue had begun between Jay and me, and I realized that you shared your home with our brave, fallen soldier. While subscribing to your blog today, I noticed this post, and felt this was a more appropriate way to address you.

Much like yourself, I, too, have realized just how naive I am to events such as this. Prior to reading this story, I was entirely (and blissfully) unaware that groups such as WBC and their leader Fred Phelps even existed. In fact, I find myself shaking at all of their misguided concepts as I write this post. I am, however, thankful to Mr. Fabrizio for having brought all of this to my/our attention. I suppose being made aware of their existence is both a blessing and a curse. Although I refuse to allow events such as this to change my ever-optimistic embrace on life, I will certainly be more guarded if/when ever I find myself in a position such as yours. The strength portrayed by your restrain, Monika, is commendable, and makes me all the more proud to be a part of your life, however small it may be. I fear that, had I been at such an event, I would, undoubtedly, have found myself on the defensive side of one of Mr. Phelps' lawsuits when my emotion took physical form. Much gratitude to people like Rick and his fellow Patriot Guard members!

This was, without a doubt, an atrocity to say the very least. My self-admitted naivety notwithstanding though - and with all due respect to those whose insightful and valuable opinions have been heard here - I still believe that those who see the "glass-is-half-full" far outweigh the opposition. Even in light of current circumstances, I, for one, do not follow the belief that "hatred is predominate in our society" ... especially when a shining star such as our "gruffy man" with the American flag, and those who rallied to his side, are still out there among us!

My thoughts & prayers go out to you Monika, as well as your husband, all friends, family, and loved ones in the community and our entire nation. And Joan, considering the obstacles you've overcome, the same can (and is) said for you too.

Thank you for sharing the story. The group of you that ended up in that parking lot stood for the soldier who died. The irony that the protesters miss....That young man DIED to protect their right to spew hatred. Thank you again for sharing a snapshot of your experience.

PGR at CPO Higgins funeral

Monika,

I am a member of the PGR in Virginia Beach, VA. I thankfully have not encountered the "folks" you speak of, but we are here just in case. I have attended 7 "missions" with the PGR, but your story actually brought tears to my eyes. and the pride that swelled within my heart I could not contain.

I was just a child and did not understand any of it during Veitnam. I had a Teenage life to live. But I understand it now. I have lived a very privileged life, because of our military heros.

Patriot Guard Riders, standing for those that stood for us. Because "never again"!! Never again will our military come home to an ungrateful nation.

thank you!

Rick...Thank you for the web site information! What a great group of guys and gals! I've been looking at the website I'm sorry to say that I never knew about the Patriot Guard but I'm going to learn about your group now. Thank you Rick.

John...I'd love to know who the Hampstead member is...is that something you can e-mail me privately?  Do you guys have regular meetings? Or is it all done via the net and e-mail?

Scott...Wow what a heartfelt comment! Don't let go of that optimistic embrace on life that you have.  I'm the same way...always seeing the good and looking on the bright side.  I think that attitude serves us well even if when we see evil it it destroys a piece of us. I'm struggling to put it where it belongs yet not allow myself to forget that womans eyes and the feeling of that Hate.

Lisa...Imagine dying to protect their rights so they could do that to him and others! unbelievable that these people can be so cruel. Thanks for stopping by and commenting Lisa.

Christy...Horrible is right and then some. I wonder if the word people even apples to them???

I would like to thank all of the posters and your comments. You are the positive example of the true American patriots. You are the people who represent a caring and compassionate nation. Monica, please don't feel bad about not knowing who we are. We are not an organization that attempts to attract the media so the nation is slowly learning about our organization. We are a humble background group. Our purpose of support, appreciation and comfort to the family, friends and community is all that we concern ourselves with when attending these services. We attend send offs as our troops are leaving, welcome homes, indigenous veterans services who have no family but deserve a dignified service, as well as many other things, some of them being happy times. I have read your and others 'thank you'. I and my fellow members do appreciate that. It reminds me while standing in a flag line, the family, whose heart is feeling such grief will walk our flag line and thank us. To be honest, I just don't know what to say. We are not there to receive thanks, especially from those who are filled with such emotion. We are there to give to others, not to receive. We feel we do not deserve thanks as the sacrifices of our military men and women and their families give so much already. We give nothing compared to what these people give.

As bikerchic said, NEVER AGAIN!

Respects,

Rick

Rick...You don't need to thank us. I think many of us saw and felt something here that we hadn't before. At least I know I did. I'm sure I'll not forget it and will remember the honor that your group of bikers displayed.  I feel like I know you all at least in spirit and that makes me smile. I can imagine what that flag line must be like. Knowing how very powerful that one guy was, that was holding the flag. I can imagine the impact of a whole line of People with Flags. Very inspiring Rick to know there are people like you and the whole group of Patriot Guards out there. The Active Rain members commenting on this post come from all over the country and they will spread the word of your group. More people need to know and stand with you. So yes you do deserve a Big Thank You.

I think the PGR is one of the greatest assets this country has.  People who have such a negative outlook on bikers should really take a look at this group.  I really wish I could have been there that day with you.  i would have loved to see that guy go out there and just stand right in front of them, completely ignoring them and standing proud with with the flag for all to see.  I probably would have been right there by his side.  Any American Holiday is huge in my house.  My kids have known all the words to "God Bless The USA" since they were old enough to talk.  I am a veteran, my husband, my dad, my brother, both my grandfathers, my grandmother, and a large majority of my in-laws.  We are the wrong group to be around with any anti-american activity.  God Bless you for posting this and God Bless all those who stand in support of our american soldiers.

Monika, Here is the link for the Patriot Guard. They are the best. The first time I heard of them on the news they were sheilding a family from the man you saw, with American flags and reving their engines while the man chanted so the family coudln't hear him. The family never knew the man was there. This was about a year ago. The organization was smaller then, now 2 years later it's nationwide I believe. Bikers are an amazing group of people and I'm glad that the American Public is finally able to see what we are about.

Anyone interested in some of Fred Phelps' background? I thought so!

Google:  Loving God's Hate, to read an expose of Phelps' and his family, by the Topeka Capitol-Journal, Phelps' hometown newspaper.  Very interesting.

In the comprehensive expose a few of the many revelations are:  several estranged children openly state they were severely and frequently abused by Phelps;  the details of Phelps' disbarment by the Kansas Supreme Court and the Federal Courts due to repeated unethical conduct;  the electronic harassment of governmental workers that Phelps disliked;  the successful lawsuit brought against Phelps for thousands of dollars owed to a candy vendor.  Phelps forced the children to sell the candy door-to-door, often late into the evening and in bad weather.

Even though several of Phelps's children are attorneys, and despite the expose being on  the Capitol-Journal website for years,  Phelps has never sued the newspaper for libel.

Humhh!!

Dear Monika,

First, let me thank you for providing a forum for expressing myself on this issue.  I spend many hours every day fighting these wicked, wicked people with the best and only weapon I have; words.  You have provided an outlet for that.

Now, let me express my sympathy for the loss your community has suffered.  It is sad a young man died, but you are right,  the young soldier is a hero.  I was going to say "was a hero", but in reality, "is a hero" is more true.  His heroism continues on, even though he is fallen.

You are quite right about something else you wrote.  This is not a debate about a "good" war or a "bad" war, but rather a simple honoring of the ultimate sacrifice having been made.  It should be something that comes naturally to everyone, for or against the war.  Politicians aren't fighting and dying, brave soldiers are: other human beings that are loved and missed by their families.

I  salute him, and I thank you.

Monica,

That was an excellent story you wrote about the hatred you observed! I am a veteran and a fellow PGR member and I have attended 3 missions to date. I was proud of my service to this country, and I am proud of what my fellow PGR members have and continue to do honoring those who have served. I thankfully have never met any of the "UG's" and I will be happy if I never do! I was glad to hear about the man you observed and mentioned in your story. I think he typifies the best of us. He's not trying to get his name in the paper, or his picture on TV, he wasn't violent or even confrontational. He simply did what had to be done, just as any service member is asked to do. He walked up and stood between the innocent and those who would do them harm. So maybe your story wasn't about hate after all. Maybe it was about love and the sacrifices that people we may not even know will make for it!

As I read somewhere in the comments......Never again!

Midori...It was awesome meeting him today. Frank came with his wife Pamela who just happens to be a REALTOR and we met for about 3 hours. Jay and I also met a PGR member named Arline, who lives in our town and is deeply involved with the Patriot Guard Riders...she was a former Mass state caption and is currently the PGR New England photographer. We watched a DVD that she created. It was fantastic and so very touching. I'm learning a lot about this awesome group of people and will be writing about them as a group soon.

Ted...Thank you so much for your comments, they are appreciated. Thank you for fighting for our country and being a member of the PGR.  After my meeting today I know what you mean by missions and"UG's". I can tell you 100% that I respect and am in awe of what you do. I know it is not easy and emotionally very hard but at the same time it has to be comforting knowing that what you do makes a difference. Particularly in a time of such great need.  My post about Hate has turned into a post about Hero's...a whole group of them. Thanks so much Ted and yes...Never Again!

Monika,

I am a PGR Member who like most attend multi-state missions. I attend missions in Northeast North Carolina and Southeast Virginia. I like most of the members take time off from work. We are not paid for what we do. Respect is what pays me. Being a career military member who served for 24 years in the NAVY, some people I have known personally and others I have not. I believe someone has mentioned that we assisted in welcome home rides as well as send-off missions. We also support those who defend us here stateside as well, from Local Law Enforcement to FireFighters who gave the ultimate sacrifice. As mentioned, we are invited guests of the families.

Reading your blog has made me go through a box of kleenexes. I am proud to be a member. When I read in your post that you finally had the chance to meet Frank, I was so excited and happy. I do not ride a bike, I provide my car (or as they say "cage") for support to carry extra flags or provide refreshments for fellow members. As you can tell by reading through the website, we are diverse. As it states- "you do not have to own a bike or even have served in the military, as long as you show respect".

Thank for this awesome forum that truly has changed from "HATE" to support and respect. Love it.

Alan

P.S. can you send me the next column you write. I wish to share this info.

I am blown away by the sheer ignorance and lack of compassion that these people would have, to come to a town that they are not from, and stir up emotions that were already raw.

This post made me cry.

I STILL believe that we will one day live in a society where the word Hate will be taught as a HISTORY subject, a distant memory for our children, and of our childrens children.

My heart goes out to the family of the fallen soldier, a hero almost forgotten because of the actions of a few who can't see the forest for the trees.

Thank you for posting this.

Thank you for bringing this out in the open.  Unfortunately this hate group does this all over the country.  I have seen their pictures in the papers and it makes me feel nauseated when I see the signs that say to pray for more soldiers to die.  How could anyone think like this?  How sick to do this in the first place, and at the service for a soldier no less?  It is absolute evil as far as I am concerned.

Thank you for the follow up on the "Flag Man" and PGR.

Dear Mrs. McGillicuddy,

I know how you feel.  Back on the 21st of April, this group was supposed to protest in my home county in Tennessee.  They never showed.  The Patriot Guard was at that funeral to pay respects to the fallen soldier.  It was then when I decided to join their group.  You don't have to have a bike.  There's no membership fee.  You just have to have RESPECT.  Yesterday, I was at the funeral of another Tennessee soldier who was killed in the Middle East.  The protestors didn't show at this one either.  Tennessee has one of the stictest laws in the union about protesting soldiers' funerals.  Westboro hardly ever comes to our state anymore since Public Charter 543 passed in 2006 that says protestors must stay 500 feet away from a funeral service, procession route, and burial site.  That pretty much puts them so far away that they can't be seen.

These people from Westboro Church (I never include the word "Baptist" because they aren't Baptists) are considered a HATE GROUP.  They are under a hatewatch by the Southern Poverty Law Center and are closely monitored by the FBI for hate crimes.  They are absolutely 100% a hate group!  Westboro is comprised mostly of the family of Fred Waldron Phelps, Sr. and his decendents.  It consists of anywhere from 75-100 members and it is a one-and-only church.  There are no other "Westboro" churches anywhere else.  This is why their protest groups are so small.  We have so many soldiers giving their lives for our freedom that they don't have the resources or manpower to protest every funeral across the country.  They even subject their young children to the brainwashing by making them carry these signs and drag our American flag across the ground.

These people come to these funerals to be seen--to shock people, and to incite them to anger.  They are fame-seekers.  They earn their money by suing people who threaten to infringe on their "Freedom of Sppech," "Freedom of the Press," "Freedom of Expression," and their so-called "Freedom of Religion."  Of Fred's 13 children, 11 of them have law degrees--12 if you include Fred himself who is barred from practicing.  The one you'll hear most about is Shirley Phelps-Roper who runs her own firm call Phelps Chartered which is available online and you can even see her mugshot from that site.  3 of the 13 Phelps children left their church and their disfunctional family behind.  I applaud Johnathan, Nathan, and Dortha for breaking away from their family's crusade of hate.

These people have been protesting soldiers' funerals ever since the August 20, 1995 bombing of their church where students from Washburn University in Topeka pipe-bombed them hurting no one and damaging very little.  They claim that ever since "America bombed their church" they were called by God for the deliverance of vegeance for their church by protesting the funerals of soldiers.  From a religious standpoint, they believe in absolute predestination that you are either absolutely predestined to be saved and there's no way to keep from being saved, or you're absolutely predestined to be lost and there's no way to keep from being lost.  They believe that only members of their church are going to Heaven and all the rest of us are going to Hell.  If you ever talk to them, they will always tell you that you're going to Hell.  Don't be offended by it.  Don't cry.  God knows how you are and it is not these people's place to pass judgment on you.  That's God's job.  These people are just plain stupid which is amazing for a family with 12 law degrees.

What I have learned as a member of the Patriot Guard Riders here in Tennessee is that it is affective to treat these people like they don't exist.  If you ever see them again, don't look at them.  Don't talk to them.  Don't even acknowledge them.  They crave attention.  Ignoring them is the greatest insult.

By the way, I would like to take the time to thank you for this blog.  It was very nice.  It was posted on the PGR's website with an article from the UnionLeader.  What you said about the PGR made me teary-eyed.  I thank Capt. Johnathan Grassbaugh for his service and for his sacrifice and send my heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.  My heart weeps.  I have yet to attend a military funeral where I didn't cry.  It's very hard to say goodbye and when you see that much outpouring of support for a soldier, it makes you pround to be an American and proud of that soldier.

Man, I just can't explain the emotion this post brought up for me. I appreciate your putting it here for all to read and I too am proud of the guy with the flag. I have very strong opinions about these types of protests but this isn't the place to air them out. All I can say is it's great to see someone doing something to counter this kind of disgusting behavior. I pray that they continue to outnumber the hate mongers and show the rest of the nation that there still is decency and honor among us. Thank you so much for sharing your story Monika!

Scott...Thank you so much for adding your feelings to my post. Your description and history of UG's  really makes me agree with that they are a Hate Group and that I really did describe them correctly when using the word Hate.  I don't understand people that can do theses types of things and I guess I really never want to understand them. Scott, I googled Shirley Phelps-Roper and found a picture of her. I'm sick at this thought but those eyes I'll not soon forget. The woman whose back is in the photo I posted on my blog, is also the one who verbally attacked me, she is the same woman unless she has a twin!  OMG! How awful. I don't understand!!! Thank you so much for adding your heartfelt comments.

Ryan...Thank you for commenting and sharing your feelings. They are truly Hateful people doing such vile things!  I think we can all make a difference.  The Patriot Guard Riders made a difference for us that day and Frank holding that flag so proudly...just awesome to see. Lets pray that this type of disgusting behavior comes to a stop. Lets pray that we Americans all stand together! Maybe we can make difference.

John....Thank you... Thank You!!!  The link works perfectly. You're right this response is incredible and so many more have e-mailed me privately! America is behind you guys...we're staring to understand what it is that you (PGR) do. How you honor our hero's...guard them on their final voyage home...protect their loved ones from seeing this hate.  I'm so proud of you all and so proud that my little town has 7 members of the PGR! Thank you so much !

americaI second Monika.  America is behind you.  Why, even a little family in Bonita Springs, Florida has been humbled by your efforts.  We've had some heavy conversations and thank you for reminding of us of our responsibilities to be true Americans.

 Hello Monika,

I have, unfortunately, seen hate in my day.

The one thing I can't understand about these types of people is how they can profess to be associated with any church.

A friend of mine has a saying, "God only wants the best for his children".

I guess these people are not children of God. So I guess we know who's children they are. God have mercy on their souls.

And God bless all of our fallen heros.

Bob...Thanks so much for stopping by! This Church is more like a cult if you ask me. I did a google search and found out a bunch of information about them. They are pretty bad and seem to simply not care about hurting people. I don't get it!

Connecticut just passed a law banning protesters from funerals and has quickly put it in effect, in advance of an expected demonstration at the memorial for a Norwich, CT soldier killed in Iraq.  I thought of you right away when I read it in the paper today.

Their god isn't God any more, it's money. Their own record and string of lawsuits are proof enough. And, believe me, money IS there.

While we would, of course, rather have had my son back, my family received around 400 large between the SGLI and other stipends from the govt. and military when he was KIA. The WBC wants that money.

These people are 'lost sheep' and need our prayers. God loves the sinners and despises sin. I know it's hard, but we must pray for and forgive them. How else can we be forgiven?

Okay, i'm ready for any flak as I've 'set my face like flint'.  :^)

(I DO have a sense of humor, too.)

Monika, I know you wrote this post in April, but I just found it looking through your blog. I'm with you. I don't understand hate at all and I too have felt and seen it. I don't understand how these people can even hold their heads up. I know the protesters have a constitutional right to protest, but, please!

Whether you are for or against the war it's our finest and brightest over there and once they commit it's our duty to support them. They're our children over there. I think we forget that....it seems they just  become a number. That's sad for all of us.

God bless the heroes like your friend Frank who makes it a point to show their support and patriotism at the funerals for our fallen.  What a wonderful thing to do, and how blessed you were to have witnessed it.

When I was reading your post I cried. Cried over the hate and then tears of pride when I read about the heroes who were there. Thank you for sharing.

Jim...I'm so sorry. I didn't see your comment until today! I'm happy to see that you didn't get any flak!!! I agree with you they are like lost sheep and god does love us all...just really hard to understand them doing such a horrible thing.  Especially to the family of our lost solider. How very sad!  Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving a comment. I truly appreciate it.

Linda...Thank you for your heart felt comment!  I cried again just remembering that day. How sad those people must be to do such a thing. I will never understand them!  The PGR and Frank the flag man really made a difference for us that day. What a wonderful group of patriots the Patriot Guard Riders are!  Thank you Linda!

Monika, I don't know what I can say that others have not already said...but still...I need to say something. YOUR WORDS...The stench is overwhelming and the sadness is suffocating...perhaps say it all. I've seen hate all of my life, and it is my mission to fight it...and to stir others to fight against it. Thanks for sharing from your heart...thanks for stirring our souls. God bless YOU!

Kathy...The comments on this post are incredible. Many are from the public and many more e-mailed me privately. Somehow this post really did travel the world. The woman whose back is in the photo is the woman who was interviewed on TV last night. Very scary. Frank aka Mr McGruffy was awesome!

Maureen...As soon as that verdict came in...my e-mail was full of people letting me know about it. When I saw it on the net I knew it was for real. Too bad the family probably won't be able to collect.

As a a former soldier I totally agree with you. Members of our armed forces take pride in protecting our liberties, even for those we disagree with, but fallen soldiers deserve to be put to rest with peace. Those protestors were out of line.

The fact that they call themselves believers is ludicrous. Believers in some kind of 60's mindest possibly. Hopefully they will just go away.

Hard to believe it's been nearly a year since I wrote this post and since Jonathan Grassbaugh died on April 7 2007.

RIP Jonathan.

Kevin...Thank you for stopping by...I missed seeing your comment and yes those "people" were way out of line. I hope no one ever has to encounter them...they are simply hateful.

I am ashamed to say I too have witnessed this "church" in action - what a sad commentary as to what free speech can be - I am certain our fore fathers never intended this.  Hate can be used for good - this will impact you and others - if nothing else - it will remind you to never treat another like this -
