Not Social Networking 2.0

technologySo there I sit in the lobby of my hotel at the NAR convention and a little cutie starts chatting with me.  He was a young kid about 25 or 30 with a funky hairdo.  He casually mentions how tiring conventions are and how hard it is to network.  You see he is an account representative for a company that provides "unlimited sales leads".  Imagine that, leads that are *unlimited*.

Being the Twitterzilla that I am I asked what online social networks he belonged to.  To my shock and horror he said NONE.  I told him he was missing the boat.  Had he been involved with online social networks he would have known hundreds and maybe even thousands of consumers and future customers BEFORE he even got to the trade show.

Social networking is a waste of time, he said. This shocked me mostly because of his age.  So I looked at the youth and ignorance exuberance in the chair next to me and wondered how someone could be missing the train so badly.  I don't want to get the kid fired or the lead company pished off so I'm not mentioning their name.  I do wonder how they could have an online business but not be involved in online networking, not Twitter, not blogging, not Active Rain, not Linked-In.

The fact that this person and his company has no online reputation, interaction or network made me actually recoil.  All credibilty was instantly stripped away because they weren't rolling with the now.   He'll be the last guy advertising in the phone book yellow pages.

How fresh can their leads be if they aren't on the clue train, anyway?  They're probably still listening to eight track tapes in that company break room.

If you aren't networking socially online you might want to consider getting started.  You will eventually have customers, clients and referring agents who may not want to do business with you because you aren't grasping technology.  There, I said it.

Chris, at 58 I'm one of the old-timers struggled to catch up with all the technology that seems to change while I'm sleeping each night.  My 35 year old daughter is dragging me kicking and screaming into the world of social net-working.  At the same convention where you met the young idiot, while standing in line a Star Bucks a young woman saw my daughter and me and said "Amy, Hello.  We finally meet."  Turns out she was an active rain friend of my daughters.  I realized at that moment how new and fresh our world is and what an integral part is blogging.  Good blog.

Chris, poor kid!  If he had a clue, he'd be working for some other type of company.  I don't think any amount of social networking helps the lead salespeople.  It's a stupid product.

Your story about the kid is so surprizing to me!  I would have guessed that most if not all of the 20 and 30 somethings are on line, social networking.   I see so many of them texting. I know I am trying to get competent and knowlegeable so I can be here and active, producing and happy after the revolution!

Hopefully you took the time to explain to him why his view about social networking might possibly be wrong.

Chris, I wonder what the age of the average twitterer is ? ...and other social media outlets. Although I'm glad they aren't on twitter is is getting to crowded, LOL, this is an interesting observation. Curious if he even had a mySpace or Facebook account ?

My encounter with young man has been followed up with a mass email thanking me for stopping by his booth at the trade show.  He would have gotten farther commenting on a blog post, following me on twitter or posting on Active Rain.  Oh, and he wants to charge 3 grand a year for his antiquated service.

It has been entertaining to read all of these responses. You told a bunch of bloggers that someone did not find blogging necessary and everyone here said, "are you serious?"

Like a butcher at a vegetarian's conference everyone thinks this poor boy is crazy.

At this point, you have probably planted a seed in this young man's head and he will be a blogging/social networking addict in no time.

Will the world never stop surprising us :)  I am surprised though when a young person doesn't embrace technology....and is at a trade show :)

Wow that is just CRAZY!  You need to be on the internet.  If your not you have no business.

As a gen x/y cusp resident "geek" at my firm, I am still learning about this twitter revolution.  I'm sure it has some value to agents, as I have already landed 3 deals via myspace & facebook.

As the word spreads, no doubt more and more "kids" will pick upon the revolution.

Congrats for being ahead of the game!

I forgot to make an additional point... just as not all 40-something women are "cougars", not all 40-something men are in a mid-life crisis, and not all 20-somethings are tech saavy.  Hopefully, those who are not, are willing to learn... else they will find themselves left behind.

Hello Twitterzilla,

I'm very happy I found ActiveRain last year!  I haven't signed up for Twitter, yet, but Jason Crouch has pointed that out as another good step to take.  See you there, someday!  :)
