Lose Control Of Your Information! Are You Sabotaging Your Online Viral Ability?

You are proud of what you write, you worked hard at writing the content for your blog, worked hard at cropping and editing your photos and spent hours editing your videos. You don't want anyone stealing your work so you decide you want to make it very clear that your work is hands off! Do not touch! You add Copyscape to your posts, your blog, your website and your photos.

But is this really the message you want to send out to the entire world in cyberspace?

I am one of those writers that adds that copyright at the bottom of my posts and all my writing and photos. Being protective over my writing exhibits a resolve in what is right and what is wrong. This is the line, do not cross it, don't steal my copy, don't steal my photos, don't steal my writing!  viral marketing and seo

While the object of our behavior is a response to those thieves who like to copy and paste, those lazy bloggers who want to plagiarize and those dirty spammers who want to steal our good name and have traffic kidnapped to bring over to their spammy, crappy sites full of scum.

In order to learn more about Copyrights you should find out the truth, sort through the rumors and get the facts with the Active Rain Radio show hosted by Brad Andersohn with guest speaker Lenn Harley and her Copyright attorney. He will certainly dispel all the myths.

While at NAR I went to an awesome session by David Meerman Scott of Web Inc Now.
I highly recommend you subscribe to David's blog.

David had me take a second look at how we are marketing online
. Like I have said many times in our articles about your online strategy you need to figure out what your goal is online. What is it that you want to accomplish? Where do you want your online marketing to lead you?  Are you here to become a famous author or are you here to make money? Either is just fine, but know which one it is.

I really had an AHAH moment listening and internalizing what David Scott was presenting as a shift in how we protect our online information that we create.

Are we going to allow the scumbags of the world to keep us in the fear box? Protecting our data and our articles, blogs and photos close to us so that the only business we will ever get is the direct business, that direct phone call? Are we actually blocking the very thing we wish to evolve and attain online?

Viral marketing is the most impacting and effective way in which to market and brand yourself and your business online. Throughout the coming weeks I will be sharing some of the most insightful paradigms that David brought into to focus.  Consider subscribing to my blog in order to make sure you don't miss any of these posts that are in creation.  As a sidebar: SEO Session IV will be up this weekend.

When you allow viral marketing you purposely and with intention lose control of your information.
Why  would you do that?  To get your video, photos, articles circulating all over the internet, being shared by friends and so on and so forth, that's why!  I got it! The light bulb went off! I want people to share my work, spread it around so that it all points back to me. Wow! What a powerful concept.

But how do you do this without compromising all of your work?  This is not permission to copy and paste and it is not permission to steal your work. This is permission based marketing by stating very clearly what you permit for your work. You can do this through the Creative Commons License. This is a great tool  because you control the use of this license. You can say that this photo may be shared by all as long as you get a link back, you can state that someone can reprint your articles on their  facebook page as long as you get a link to your face book page. There are all sorts of ways to create your Creative Commons license.
Creative Commons is free to all to use.

Jeff Turner was sharing with me that his link is embedded in his photos and he allows anyone to use his photos that he took.
His original photos, getting spread all over the internet and even on the Wall Street Journal with links all pointing back to him. He has this one photo that he took of a FSBO sign that has been used by the news media and agents all over the country. Hmmm, I wonder if any of those people would want to find out more about Jeff and discover he is the owner and genius behind the Real Estate Shows! Could that result in any sales? Of course it does! Far better use of his time to make his photos viral in order to get people to come to him that he would not ever have met if he had to do just direct marketing online.

I write a lot of blogs about how the most important SEO tool besides keywords and titles are links back to you.

The Internet is in its infancy. We have not yet scratched the surface of what we can do with online marketing and social networking. Far be it that we should be embracing the evolution of the future of how humans will do business. We will begin a discussion on how to make your photos, videos and articles go wild viral!

Very cool I have started to link my AR blog through other media, For the search phrases that I have been concentrating on I come up either 1st or 3 to 4 times on the first page. A lot of this comes from reading your blog and a couple of others. So Thanks and Keep It Up!!!

How do you put a link in your photos to have them come back to you?  I'm sure I should know this :-)

Nestor,

Great idea. I like the idea of creating stock real estate photos and making it viral with a link pointing back.  Would people using the photo be able to strip the link from the photo?  I am adding you to my associate list.  Great post.

More great stuff Katerina. One question- I don't want to split hairs and if I am wrong I know you'll tell me: I went to license site you cited. It says not for commercial use. I am guessing that means mass production? And it does not mean use on my own blog (re-blog) to generate business for myself. (Does that make sense? Am I reading way too much into this?) :)

Katerina-  Interesting concept.  We can all benefit from viral marketing.  It's the plagiarism and copy and paste that is so disturbing.

My question is the same as Cindy's.  How do you attach a link to your photos and to what sight do you have them point.  With articles, does it display attribution.  If someone simply reads it and doen't "click" on anything, how does it link back?   I assume by having them link back to you, Google recognizes you as originating source.

I'm already a subscriber of yours.  I guess I'll have to check out David's blog, as well.

Katerina, I am just now starting to release control over my writings. It's hard to do but I think getting it out there is more important than trying to protect it. It's also smart to just make sure you have links back to yourself scattered through out the body of the article.

Katerina, great post, as always!  To some degree I take a bit of copying as a compliment, but for the most part it makes me crazy.  :-)  Question for you about the link that Jeff embeds in his photos -- does he just display a URL on the front of the photo or is there another way to keep the link intact?  I guess I'll go read his post...

Wow - what an incredible resource and ideas - especially about embedding the link in the photos - brilliant.

I have always thought that the best way to sell yourself is to give good previews.  It's like a movie, if the previews stink, nobody will want to watch.

You have to give good information away in order to be able to attract an audience.  Thanks for doing this.

Katerina ~ The Creative Commons license is a wonderful way to spread the word.  Of course I don't care to share my work with my competitors who have proven in the past to ignore my rights.  I can't tell you how many have just helped themselves to major portions of my work and graphics I have paid to be created.  This is a sore point with me and I will never relent.

On the other hand people who ask permission are never turned down.  :)

Exactly HOW does one embed a clickable link into a photograph that someone downloads from the web?  A photograph that I could download say, from Google Images?  Or a website or blog?

Sorry, but I don't believe that's possible except when it is actually part of a website or blog. And in that instance, the link is created in the html, NOT on the actual photo. You can embed some META DATA in a photograph, but it's not clickable and 99.9% of people don't even know it exists, let alone how to access it.

How is this done?  I think you may have misunderstood....

Funny, Katerina, that you write this today as I was listening to the copyright show and wondering if that was protecting my photos (adding my link to them).  I have been doing that for quite some time but, for the last week have been trying to keep my head above water and left that step out when I upload my photos!  I'm with you--I WANT my work shared and out there for all to see and read and follow back to ME!

Congrats on the well-deserved little gold star!

Fred- No, I did not misunderstand anything. You can embed links into your photos with Snagit. You can create a license wherein you do not put the link in the photo but say that the user must link back to you as part of the permission to use the photo. But I will write a post about it because my daughter just went into labor so I have to stop commenting.

Katerina - this is obviously the hot topic of the week - very well written.  I believe that this viral marketing is what the AR developers were shooting for so wisely when they created the Re-Blogging option!  Yes, I agree...get your work out there...let it flow freely...but make sure it flows back to you!  To butcher and old saying (in other words, I'm messing it up on purpose!), "Once you create something, set it free - if it doesn't come back to you, then hunt the plagarizer down and cease and desist them!"  LOL

Great idea, not always having control of your content can be a good thing as we have seen on occasion.  But isn't the re-blog a small part of this also, allowing someone else to pre-empt your piece that they want to promote because it's something they find vaulable?  I did notice that you have removed the copyright on the bottom of the post with the new verbiage.  Good concept that I want to investigate more.

Hope your daughter is doing OK!

Katerina,

Good afternoon. Yes, you have touched on several key issues to those of us that not only take the photos, but also spend the time typing and posting. And while I am a tag and link fan, it urkes me to see those 'using' my work with not even the least of credit. This will be an issue to follow, but ultimately one can either say yes, no or just have the pride in knowing they did it right the first time.

Good days,

I have been a professional photographer for over a decade.  There is absolutely NO WAY to create an embedded link in a jpeg.  It's impossible.  You must have misunderstood something, as this absolutely CANNOT be done.  People on here are getting all excited over something that is technically IMPOSSIBLE.  This I am certain.  It's my business.

Michael- I just reread my post and it does not say anywhere in my post that you can take a jpg file and embed a link into it. I allow the use of my photos in a creative commons license in which you are agreeing to give me link love when you use my photo.

You can embed the links into the photos in a power point slide or a scan it slide, or an email or a video. You can embed links into video through Mixpo.

Once that is off my page of 10 posts; you should not have to scroll any longer. Also, if you use Firefox as your browser, which is the platfrom AR was built with, you should have less problems. If you are using IE you should switch to Firefox anyways because it is much safer than IE. Katerina
