Trash in the streets of Columbus There was a Veteran's Day Parade last Friday in downtown Columbus.

Monday would have been the three day holiday kind of day off of work for some people. Was this a three day weekend for some?  Were government offices in downtown Columbus closed Monday?  Were banks closed Monday?  Was there no mail service Monday? I really did not remember by Wednesday night.

Tuesday was the real day.  Tuesday November 11 was Veteran's Day 2008.

Today is Trash Day in the Navy area. Trash day rotates for all five "colored areas" in the City of Columbus when there is a holiday.  There was some confusion last night.. there was some effort to call via the number that stuck in my head:

614-675-NAVY

That number goes to a fax!

I tried using a borrowed IPhone to Google for the City of Columbus trash pick up site... I love the IPhone, I covet the IPhone but I don't have one and I have a hard time finding my way around on an IPhone.  When I couldn't find the info I was seeking easily on the borrowed IPhone, I gave up,  I thought... I'll hop on the computer to check it out LATER.. too lazy to go get my phone sleeping in my purse in the next room.

I should have, I could have gone to my OLD website but I did not.  My garbage blogging goes waaaaay back. I first blogged about the Columbus Refuse Division back in February 2007 on Columbus Best Blog which later came to be called Discover Columbus...

I forgot about Trash Day. The squeaking, or is it creaking? ... the noise of the "arm" made me remember too late.. The collecition vehicles have an arm that picks up the trash receptacles.  It is TRASH Day today in the NAVY area today...

From About US on the City of Columbus website:

"Trash collection for the City of Columbus is operated by the Department of Public Service, Division of Refuse Collection. The City collects trash from more than 325,000 households using trucks with mechanical arms to pickup and empty collection containers. This makes trash collection safer for collectors, faster for residents and more cost effective for the City."

The phone number is 614-645-NAVY.  Saved on MY phone now.   The current recording says:

"Please NOTE Veterans Day, November 11 is NOT an observed holiday for the City of Columbus"

The next holiday that affects trash pick up is Thanksgiving... excuse me while I walk across the street to retrieve the trash receptacle ... it was too late when I realized I was hearing that creaking arm....

Previously on DiscoverColumbusOH.com  Columbus has color coded trash collection

Maureen, got to know those OFFICIAL holidays. Many thought Nov. 11th would go with a Monday holiday bill but it doesn't.

Gary I am not sure whether the holidays are the official holidays or not.  The challenge comes in on Thursday, Friday or the next Tuesday remembering if there was a holiday the previous Monday and if it counted.  In the old days it was in the Columbus Dispatch (weekly?  daily?) but who gets one anymore?  There was a letter that came out at the beginning of the year w/ a chart that I taped inside a kitchen cabinet. It's all online and available via phone. I think it was always available via phone thats why the 4 letter color names for 645-NAVY, 645-PJNK, 645-GOLD,  645-RUBY,  I can never remember all 5..... 645-GRAY????

Maureen - we've all been there!!!  Isn't it nice to know that there is the "across the street" option when we have forgotten to set the cans out to the curb and awaken rudely to the sound of the trash truck coming down the street!  LOL  Glad we're not the only one!
